Overview & Reviews
The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.
- Fun to drive, roomy/comfortable interior, solid build quality, available all-wheel drive, powerful W8 engine.
- Some confusing interior controls, price goes up quickly with options.

3 strikes and your OUT - Never again! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By dww - December 27 - 10:43 pm93 Passat GLX, 97 Audi A4 and 02 GLX Wagon, not one could reach 90K mileage. Wagon blew water pump, blew head gasket, bent valves $5,000 to fix. This all happened in 2 minutes on the highway not a chance to save the car and of course is outside of extended warranty. Good bye German Unreliability Hello Japanese Reliability!

Best Looking Wagon for the Money - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Jascon - December 27 - 10:00 amThe only annoyance has been a sound in the right dash connection area that I havent had fixed yet. Other than that its a good solid wagon.

Nice car, want another one - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By trbochrg - December 25 - 3:43 pmLove the car, i bought it new and i now have over 32,000 miles on it. I love the overall looks of it. Wish i had gotten the 5 Speed, The Tiptronics can be entertaining, but it definately isnt as fun as a manual. A couple of recalls, ignition coils, Transmission computer upgrade, and gas tank protector...service has been very good at my dealership South Shore VW in Hanover Mass. I would give their service dept an 8 out of 10 for my experineces, although i have noticed while waiting for my service to be completed that others arent having as great a service... Biggest complaint, i am trying to buy another VW, but no one seems to want to call me back, hello!!!

Run away! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Cheesehead in TX - December 13 - 4:33 amWell, this was an experiment in "Premium German Engineering" that will never be repeated in my life. This is the absolute worst of the 20 cars I have owned in my lifetime. Cannot even remember all the broken things in only 8 months- catalytic converters, brakes, oil leaks, coolant leaks, broken power seats, inferior leather seats. And scheduled maintenance! What a joke- $2k for brake work, $2300 for cats, $1500 for timing belt + getting rid of PLASTIC water pump. Run away, do not even consider one of these used. If you have to have a VW, but it new and sell it before its 4 years old. Period.

When you rent - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By d c - November 16 - 9:36 pmWhen you rent a car as often as I do, you know you have a good car when you get back home and start your own car up. I rent newer cars, and their fit, finish and performance dont compare to my VW Passat GLX. And the service! My cars armrest started to wear; no sweat, the dealership (in Colorado, no less), happily replaced it. Right now I am considering an SUV because of a potential job change to the Midwest. I doubt seriously if I will trade in or sell my Passat. Its a classic!

GLX Passatt - Review After Four Years - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Disappointed Owner - November 2 - 1:10 pmThe Passat is not a reliable / dependable car. Mine is on its third set of new REAR rotors and fourth set of pads in 37,000 miles. The first three times were under warranty (dealership asked NO questions). They made it seem like it was a problem with that year of car. Now, after the warranty is expired, they are refusing to accommodate us with new back brakes and are claiming that we always paid for the pads (which wasnt the case). The radio stopped working and was replaced (no questions asked). You cannot change your taillights and headlights. Ours burned out about seven times! Also, this car has had problems with its electrical system, throttle lag (which is dangerous), and its serpentine belt has already been replaced - tires too.

VW did well with the redesign... - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By jamesd44 - October 9 - 10:00 amIve driven the heck out of this car so far, and have had no problems within 25K miles. It is by far the most comfortable car Ive ever driven out of three that Ive owned (Acura, Cadillac, Chevy). Im a big fan of the styling and for a base model with some additional packages, I feel like I received an excellent value for what I paid. One beef is with the handling, I wish it werent so soft. My other drawback is the short warranty (I purchased an extended warranty to take care of that, though). All total (car + warranty) I paid less than $26K. The dealer was a pleasure to work with and their service dept. is the best.
