Overview & Reviews
The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.
- Fun to drive, roomy/comfortable interior, solid build quality, available all-wheel drive, powerful W8 engine.
- Some confusing interior controls, price goes up quickly with options.

Its a great car - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Mudbone - February 28 - 8:03 pmIve had my Passat for almost 2 years. Bought it used with 9,000 miles on it. I now have 38,000 miles on it. Its been in the shop 5 - 6 times. All problems (trans, cv boot, rear rotors, seat motor) were repaired by the dealer an no cost to me. It rides great, gets good mpg with no repeat or nagging problems. Its holding great resale value and looking good. I think Ill keep it a while longer.

Super Car! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By lawdog - February 25 - 10:00 amI bought this car in November of 2001 and am still in love with it. I always back away from it after I lock it up! Very good pickup with some initial lag due to the ASR (just turn it off if you want to squeal the wheels). Incredible acceleration even at highway speeds, but a bit more sluggish with a car full of adults. Outstanding fit and finish. No mechanical problems whatsoever. Only thing that broke was the tape player, which VW fixed for free. Cant get over how comfortable the ride is, and I think all the interior controls are perfectly set up. Bottom line: I highly recommend this car.

So far, so good - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By clekezarke - February 20 - 10:00 amThougth we were gonna get another Trailblazer, but test drove the Passat because of the Edmunds review. Wow. No comparison. The handling, pickup, and braking are far superior to the Blazer. As for room, there is plenty. This is a solid car. We got most of the bells and whistles on ours and are very happy thus far. Careful though, it can be a little too fun to drive as is evidenced by that little citation from a jealous traffic officer!

Is it Mexican or German? - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By JD@NYC - February 13 - 2:00 am2002 VW Passats overall fit and finish is beautiful in and out. The 1.8t, is horrible. Turbo lag galore. This is not the engine for this car. Increase liters, horsepower, and torque, drop turbo and add smaller 6. I too had the starter coil replaced after only 2k. Are VWs really made in Germany or Mexico. Mechanical problems are not relegated to the Passat but other VW models as well. I lease a 99 Jetta VR6 with new body style and didnt have a problem with it. I found out it was made in Wolfsburg. Please tell us where are they made now and why reliability has gone south. Im stuck with this engine for 3 1/2 more years.

First love - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Cisco Cerna - January 29 - 9:00 pmI purchased the car the first week it was released. It was love at first sight, the changes to the front head light and rear tail light were nothing less than attractive. On the drive home day turned to night and if I thought the interior was a 7, it jumped over to a 12 once I turned of the lights. Blues radiated from the chrome accented dials and reds surrounded me at every angle.

Recommended - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By 4motion02 - January 27 - 3:20 pmI have owned the car since new. It has performed well over that time with only routine maintenance required. I would buy another one (assuming it was taken care of) in a minute.

Passats are the Lemons of VW - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By The Madman - January 14 - 10:00 amIve purchased my 2002 Passat in Nov. 2001. I loved the car "So i thought". the first week i had the car, one of the Headlights went out, 2 weeks later the fog lights went too, and more surprizes every month until last week when the ENG, EPC, and ASR light would all come on at the same time and the car would spuders, chokes, and stalls in the middle of traffic and had to restart it. The car has been at the Dealer ships garage for four and still have no answer on whats causing the problem and how to go about repairing it. - suggestion to everyone -- Stay away if you can and buy the real thing, Audi, BMW, or Mercedes if youre in the market for a German car.

Family Sport Vehicle - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By mds5295 - January 8 - 10:00 amWe traded a 99 Accord in for the Passat, and we have loved every minute of it. As a previous BMW & Honda owner, this is definitely a German built auto. The highway ride is comparable to high dollar luxury sedans. You will cruise at 95 mph, and have virtually no sensation of speed or wind noise. The interior is considerably quieter than our previous Accord. We opted for the 5 spd GLS with everything except leather, and it reminds me very much of the 535i I previously owned.

Buyers Beware!! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Peter - December 30 - 7:50 pmI bought my 2002 vw used in 2005 from a dealer with and purchased a 5 yrs/100000 miles extended warranty and it was a "certified used vehicle". At 72000 miles (2007), the engine was replaced and at 75000 miles (2007) the transmission failed becasue a bolt which hold the transmission to the engine was missing!?? Dealer said the warranty has expired on Jan.2007? Came to find out that the extended warranty that vw offered covers not 5 years from the date of the purchase, but 5 years from the model year 2002- 2007!?
