This Year's Model Updates:

The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, roomy/comfortable interior, solid build quality, available all-wheel drive, powerful W8 engine.
Cons:
  • Some confusing interior controls, price goes up quickly with options.

  • Drivers wanted?? Make a car that drives. - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

This car has been nothing but a nightmare, as has been dealer and VW corporate service. Ignition coils failed on 3 separate occasions because they wont fix them all at once even with the recall. Dealer wont fix for 10 days. Placing a new car seat in a family car should not wear through the fabric in months. Now a new recall to prevent a fuel line fire if you get a flat tire.

This car is a great example of a combination between safety, reliability, and sportiness. The price tag is a little heavy but this is better than anything Japan or Detroit could dish out.

  • Id probably buy another one - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I bought this car new and I still love it. The driving dynamics and the general build quality are commendable. The fuel economy of the 1.8T is terrific (25 around town, 29-31 on the hwy) yet V6-like acceleration is there when I want it. The Monsoon sound system is great. Its great in the snow (with snow tires). The interior comfort and lighting are super. I have two complaints: a couple things have gone wrong that should not go wrong (clogged heater core) and it is expensive to maintain.

Moving from 98 Passat to 2001 and 1/2 Passat was a pleasure. More power, outstanding ergonomics, excellent handling.

  • A Pleased New Owner - GLS Wagon - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I was originally considering the Jetta GLS with the Lux/leather options. Then I drove the Passat and I had to go for it. The base model suits me just fine. I really LOVE this car. The 5 speed is fun to drive and the Monsoon sound is the best. It feels like a much more expensive car. The ride is rock solid. I had an Audi 200 (1990) before this and feel that I traded up to the Passat. The amenities are plentiful. I especially like the lights under the door panels which illuminate upon exit and entry. I obviously, highly recommend this vehicle.

  • THIS IS A 4? - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

When we first test drove this vehicle, i couldnt believe it was a four cylinder. After that, I couldn,t justify the extra $2300 for the six. The car has been fantastic. Why would anyone pay all the extra money for the Audi? The build quality is absolutely first-rate; it gives my CLK cause for alarm. ( just kidding MB )

  • What a Dream.. - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I looked at the Volvo 60 and the Passet. No contest. I am in sales and am in my car all day long. The car is very comfortble and the 4 cyl. Turbo along with the 5 Speed Tip-Tronic Auto gets my car up to freeway speed in a flash. Fit and finish is excellent. I am very pleased with this car.

  • One Year Review of 2002 VW Passat - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

My Passat has run problem free for 11 months and 8600 miles. Ride is smooth and quite on the highway. Highway mileage very good. Averaged 33.8 MPG on a recent 600 mile round trip. Turbo is smooth on the highway a bit of turbo lag in city driving. Overall quality of vehicle is excellent. My only complaint is the comfort of the seats. I previously owned a 1997 Passat GLX with leather seating and those seats fit like a glove. My 2002 has the leather seating option but the seats are not very comfortable on long trips. The seat bottoms seam short and the 2002 lacks one adjustment in seat bottom that was present in the 1997.

  • An absolute steal! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Currently leasing this car at dealer price of 31K. Was used as a demo, but what 2002 W8 wasnt? Beautiful ride, excellent stability, decent power. Absolutley the best car Ive ever driven, however I may be biast since Ive been a VW owner for 5 years.

  • Like vehicle, hate the reliability - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I had a major FUEL LEAK on my passat just outside of the warranty period, I was disappointed that VW would do nothing to offset the $600+ cost for the repairs, not to mention they had no interest in learning about what caused this serious safety issue. Gas was spraying from a high pressure fuel line directly on top of the engine! I also had a cv joint fail, oxygen sensors fail and now my check engine light is back on again! Other than reliability issues this car is fun to drive and is affordable to buy but terrible reliability. I wont buy another VW until they are able to make reliable vehicles, there are plenty of options for fun to drive vehicles that wont need all the repairs
