This Year's Model Updates:

The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, roomy/comfortable interior, solid build quality, available all-wheel drive, powerful W8 engine.
Cons:
  • Some confusing interior controls, price goes up quickly with options.

  • Not Happy at All - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Do not buy this car! It is a piece of junk. Ive had it for 8 mos and want to get rid of it. 5x to dlr in 8 mos. Is that common? Engine noise explained as use of wrong oil. They tested my oil? Car sold to me w/ 2 open recalls. Thats a certified used car? VW needs to review their dealers as well. Not happy at all with entire staff.

  • Nice When it Runs - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Have owned the passat for less than a year and has been in the shop for 28 days. I didnt buy a new car to be in the shop all year. Typical problems coils fail, esp. in cold weather. Power relay also failed. Various engine alarms need to be reset. All parts are typically on back-order and take 2 weeks to get. Will invoke Wisconsin lemon law soon and attempt to get refund.

  • Never again, I want a full refund - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I have the car in the shop on three separate occasions in 7 months - twice for ignition coil problems and once for a valve problem. The second time it was in the shop for a week and they rented me a reliable dodge caravan. The last time the vehicle was in the shop they said there was a defective valve and sent my wife home without repairing the vehicle, but not before they backed my car into a wall and put a hole in my rear bumper. I will never buy a volkswagon again. Get something reliable like a camry or accord.

Fun to drive, however, I had many recalls and is very expensive to maintain

  • Best car I ever bought - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Bought this car used with 22,000 and five years old. Hands down the best purchase I have ever made. This car truly enjoys driving 80mph. This is my wife daily driver and used when we go on vacations and is just alot of fun to drive. We have had no problems at all and regret paying for the extended warranty since we never got to use it. This was our first VW and were looking into buying another and getting ride of my Dodge.

I have close to 80K on this car and have had no big problems. It drives great and is so much fun. I am definately going to look into another VW as my next car or SUV!

  • radio problem - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

The 1.8T is by far the funnest vehicle I have ever driven. No problems to date except for the radio. I FIXED RADIO BY WIGGLING THE FUSE! What a surprise on the dash lights when first drowe at night. Did not know they were so pretty when I bought the car.

  • Maxima guy buys VW - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Have had five Maximas since 1990. After testing a 2002 Maxima and Passat, my 15- year-old son said "except for sheer acceleration, the Passat is superior in every way." He was right. This car is stylish (even white, which I dont care for), very comfortable (with memory seats, everyone should find a good driving position), has good room for people (abovementioned 6 son or his 65" friend sits behind me when I drive) and stuff (easily handles 8lumber). I have two herniated lower discs in my back, so the heated seatbacks as well as seats are great. Overall, German ergonomics are better than Japanese. Looking forward to the 4-Motion capability in bad weather. Power could be better. Six months...so far so good!

  • Do not buy - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This car is very attractive and fun to drive. However, it has serious quality issues and is not reliable. I have been stranded twice because of the coils (only to be recalled after I had already been stranded!) After the first two went bad, VW would not replace the other two until they broke (full knowing that they would eventually.) The headlights blow out every 12000 miles, the radio will stop playing (but can be easily fixed by jiggling the fuze). Ive had to have the doors adjusted because they were falling off.

  • Love it - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I have been looking for a while for a luxury vehicle in the Mercedes E class range. I am not a big fan of BMWs, but anything else goes. I happened to go to a VW dealership on a whim and saw the W8. Once I drove it, I knew I found what I was looking for. It could be a little bigger in size, but the engine power, style, handling, all scream look out Mercedes (and Audi, BWM, etc). This is my first VW, and if they continue down this path, Ill be buying many more. And you cant beat the price...
