This Year's Model Updates:

The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, roomy/comfortable interior, solid build quality, available all-wheel drive, powerful W8 engine.
Cons:
  • Some confusing interior controls, price goes up quickly with options.

  • 3 strikes and your OUT - Never again! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

93 Passat GLX, 97 Audi A4 and 02 GLX Wagon, not one could reach 90K mileage. Wagon blew water pump, blew head gasket, bent valves $5,000 to fix. This all happened in 2 minutes on the highway not a chance to save the car and of course is outside of extended warranty. Good bye German Unreliability Hello Japanese Reliability!

  • Run away! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Well, this was an experiment in "Premium German Engineering" that will never be repeated in my life. This is the absolute worst of the 20 cars I have owned in my lifetime. Cannot even remember all the broken things in only 8 months- catalytic converters, brakes, oil leaks, coolant leaks, broken power seats, inferior leather seats. And scheduled maintenance! What a joke- $2k for brake work, $2300 for cats, $1500 for timing belt + getting rid of PLASTIC water pump. Run away, do not even consider one of these used. If you have to have a VW, but it new and sell it before its 4 years old. Period.

  • Electrical problems galore - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

In the year and 3 months that I have owned the 2002 Passat wagon, I have encountered numerous electrical problems. First, the entire security system went out after only 7,000 miles. After 9,000 miles the entire rear light assembly stopped working. After 12,000 the front headlight and rear cigarette lighter went out. After 17,000 the other headlight went out. Overall, this is an enjoyable car to drive but the reliability is a real issue. If you dont mind constant trips back to the dealership, buy one. Otherwise, avoid it like the plague.

  • Too Many Problems - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I recently got a call from my dealer saying that I had a couple of problems with my 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T. First, the vacuum line needs to be replaced at a cost of $178. Also, the car needs to be decarbonated at a cost of $198. Third, the brake pads and rotors need to be replaced - cost $440. Is this a joke? The only mistake I made was to buy this terrible car. I have already had a number of problems with it before this, including the ignition coils failing making it undrivable, a number of electrical issues, I have to replace bulbs twice a year. bad quality tires that are easliy damaged, and bad wiper blades that dont work well in snow / rain.

  • worst car ever - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I will never buy a VW again. Ever since I bought it I had nothing but problems. After a month or so glove department latch broke and from there everything just went down hill. I spent over $6,000 just maintaining this car. Overall the worst car I have ever owned.

  • Not Happy at All - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Do not buy this car! It is a piece of junk. Ive had it for 8 mos and want to get rid of it. 5x to dlr in 8 mos. Is that common? Engine noise explained as use of wrong oil. They tested my oil? Car sold to me w/ 2 open recalls. Thats a certified used car? VW needs to review their dealers as well. Not happy at all with entire staff.

  • Never again, I want a full refund - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I have the car in the shop on three separate occasions in 7 months - twice for ignition coil problems and once for a valve problem. The second time it was in the shop for a week and they rented me a reliable dodge caravan. The last time the vehicle was in the shop they said there was a defective valve and sent my wife home without repairing the vehicle, but not before they backed my car into a wall and put a hole in my rear bumper. I will never buy a volkswagon again. Get something reliable like a camry or accord.

  • Never will i own another VW again! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

I bought this car thinking it would be a good way to save on gas and still able to haul my mountain bikes around and travel, was i wrong! To mention some of the problems... Tire went flat then the spare went flat, the glove box handle broke off, the knobs on the stereo came off, the alarm will go off at random times, the serpentine belt broke and fried the motor, gas cap door wouldnt open, the thermostat in cold weather sets off my check engine light, the hatch stopped opening, oh and to top it all off i have to put premium in the car which then makes it just as much much as my old SUVs to fill up. I have had an 88 Landcruiser and it ran better and was more reliable than this car!!!!!!!!!!

  • Drvrs Wntd-bc thy lose the 1s they have - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Brake rotors are completely warped and need to be replaced after only 10,000 miles (according to VW, they were fine at the last major tuneup). Blown fuses that arent fixable by owner because VW makes it so the owner cant get to the fuses unless the entire front end is taken apart. Poor poor gas mileage!! Would rather drive an SUV is this is the mileage (15-18 mpg!!! - this sucks!). Been to three different VW dealers and have never come away completely happy

  • NOT TO FOND - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

THE CAR IS JUST SIMPLY NO WORTH THE MONEY, FOR THE PRICE OF THIS CAR I WOULD MUCH RATHER DRIVE A MERCEDES OR BMW. BUILD QUALITY IS POOR
