The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

  This car is everything I expected it to be and more. I love it> Its had some reliability problems, but the dealer has been very good about repairs, offering loaner cars, etc.

  I have now had my Passat Wagon for 7 weeks and 2600 miles. At first I was a little leery of getting the 1.8, wondering if it would have enough power. After having had the car for 2600 miles, I would recommend the 1.8 highly!! The car is a blast to drive, the Monsoon sound system is excellent, and the comfort for me (62", 215lbs) is just great.

  In the year and 3 months that I have owned the 2002 Passat wagon, I have encountered numerous electrical problems. First, the entire security system went out after only 7,000 miles. After 9,000 miles the entire rear light assembly stopped working. After 12,000 the front headlight and rear cigarette lighter went out. After 17,000 the other headlight went out. Overall, this is an enjoyable car to drive but the reliability is a real issue. If you dont mind constant trips back to the dealership, buy one. Otherwise, avoid it like the plague.

  Solid car - 2002 Volkswagen Passat

  I have owned the Passat since it was new. I have always enjoyed driving the car. It has a lot of luxury features. The car has been reliable with no major repairs needed. I have had a few issues. Headlights bulbs go out often. It burns 1 to 2 quarts of oil between oil changes. I have had to service the back brakes 3 times even though the car has less than 50,000 miles. Gas mileage has been poor.

  I looked at many small wagons (needed the space for outdoor gear, kids stuff, and trips to the home center) but couldnt find another that compared in ride, performance, and looks. I would rather have a peppy 5-speed than a truck-like SUV and the Passat V-6 fits the bill.

  This car was the first car that my husband and I bought together. I think we will be lyal VW customers for life. The car rides wonderfully, has plenty of get-up-and-go and is VERY comfortable! The cargo space rivals that of most mid-sized SUVs and it gets FAR BETTER gas milage than most SUVs! We are so thrilled with this car!
