Overview & Reviews
The arrival of the 270-horsepower, all-wheel-drive W8 sedan and wagon disturbs the tranquility of the Passat lineup. Standard features in the W8 cars build upon the already impressive GLX equipment list, adding Electronic Stabilization Program with BrakeAssist, vented disc brakes all around (as opposed to solid discs in rear) xenon headlights with washers, wider 215/55R16 tires, an upgraded trip computer and extra chrome throughout the cabin. The rest of the Passats receive only minor upgrades for 2002, including a trunk escape release for the sedan, a cruise control indicator light and an on/off switch for the electrochromic mirror. In addition, all-new Volkswagens come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen will offer a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.
- Fun to drive, roomy/comfortable interior, solid build quality, available all-wheel drive, powerful W8 engine.
- Some confusing interior controls, price goes up quickly with options.

Nice car, want another one - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By trbochrg - December 25 - 3:43 pmLove the car, i bought it new and i now have over 32,000 miles on it. I love the overall looks of it. Wish i had gotten the 5 Speed, The Tiptronics can be entertaining, but it definately isnt as fun as a manual. A couple of recalls, ignition coils, Transmission computer upgrade, and gas tank protector...service has been very good at my dealership South Shore VW in Hanover Mass. I would give their service dept an 8 out of 10 for my experineces, although i have noticed while waiting for my service to be completed that others arent having as great a service... Biggest complaint, i am trying to buy another VW, but no one seems to want to call me back, hello!!!

When you rent - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By d c - November 16 - 9:36 pmWhen you rent a car as often as I do, you know you have a good car when you get back home and start your own car up. I rent newer cars, and their fit, finish and performance dont compare to my VW Passat GLX. And the service! My cars armrest started to wear; no sweat, the dealership (in Colorado, no less), happily replaced it. Right now I am considering an SUV because of a potential job change to the Midwest. I doubt seriously if I will trade in or sell my Passat. Its a classic!

VW did well with the redesign... - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By jamesd44 - October 9 - 10:00 amIve driven the heck out of this car so far, and have had no problems within 25K miles. It is by far the most comfortable car Ive ever driven out of three that Ive owned (Acura, Cadillac, Chevy). Im a big fan of the styling and for a base model with some additional packages, I feel like I received an excellent value for what I paid. One beef is with the handling, I wish it werent so soft. My other drawback is the short warranty (I purchased an extended warranty to take care of that, though). All total (car + warranty) I paid less than $26K. The dealer was a pleasure to work with and their service dept. is the best.

Love my Passat 8 years later - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Don - October 7 - 2:00 amThis was and still is my first VW. I love the way it handles, even now at 133000 miles on the odo. Original clutch. Only issues were with ignition coils and radio(replaced under warranty years ago) and a power window regulator (last week). Last week, VW also replaced the trunk lid and remote trunk release -- there was a rust spot at one of the license plate lights and this moisture had caused the trunk release to malfunction. My dealer experience has always been excellent. Sure you pay more than for an independent, but the guys at Hunt Club VW (Ottawa Canada)understand the value of customer service. My next car will be a VW.

Great car! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Mare - October 2 - 10:00 amI love my Passat. It handles very well and it is comfortable and roomy inside. The interior is beautiful. It has a lot of little things: the rear view mirrors go down when youre backing up (and theyre heated!); there are 3 garage door buttons; the drivers seat has memory; the windsheild wipers "know" when its raining... the list goes on.

Consumer Reporting on Vehicle - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By Joy Jones - July 29 - 10:00 amThe only thing I dont like is that snow and dirt easily get caught up in the wheel area and make the car shake until you have washed them out.

Great Car - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By TSF - July 23 - 6:43 pmMaybe Ive been lucky, but I have put almost 90k on the vehicle since purchasing used in 05 (now 119k miles), and havent had a single problem. Fun to drive, great mpg w/ the 1.8t and 5-spd. (avg. 33 mpg on the freeway), looks good, unbeatable interior design and looks with the leather seats. Matches or exceeds the 01 Acura TL it replaced in every respect except horsepower, and it has been far more reliable to boot (2 trannys, new dash, other issues w/ 01 Acura).

Bang for the Buck! - 2002 Volkswagen Passat
By ChicagoVW - July 9 - 10:00 amMy wife and I just purchased the Passat. We were comparing it to the Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, So far, I can find few flaws with the car. Despite other reviewers comments on the 1.8T not having power, I have found that to not be the case. While there is a lag in power in a off the line start, when the turbo kicks in, it can throw your head back! Its passing power is excellent. I have one problem though. Having been used to my Toyota Camry, I found myself driving at 85mph when I thought I was going 55. It travels almost too well at high speeds.
