Both feature a 200-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and both can be equipped with VW's trick DSG direct shift gearbox. All Jettas besides the Value Edition now feature standard alloy wheels, and torso-protecting rear-seat side airbags are newly optional.

  • Absolutely Thrilled - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

After 25 years of driving Suburbans and Silverado 4WD diesel pickups, I was ready for a vehicle that gets better gas mileage. I was a bit apprehensive about a smaller car, and didnt have opportunity to test drive a Jetta prior to purchase, so that added to my anxiety. My fears were completely unfounded. I am thrilled with my new Jetta TDI! It handles incredibly well, is gorgeous, and has wonderful amenities. The diesel engine is very quiet. My long-legged family has plenty of space in front and back seats. It was a 350 mile drive home from the dealership, and the car averaged 50.2 mpg on the highway, far above the estimated mpg. So far Im getting over 40 mpg in town. What a terrific car!

  • Best Family Car on the Market - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The VW Jetta has it all when picking a family vehicle. From style to value, this car has it all. Looking for high mpg? The Jetta beats the Toyota Prius in real world conditions. Is a well tailored and executed interior high on your list? The Jetta has you covered with the experts pick as the best interior in the business. The driving experience, especially with the Audi sourced DSG six speed automatic transmission, is terrific. The low end torque of the TDI driveline will make gas powered cars seem lackluster. Looking for build quality? The Jetta has it, from narrow body panel gaps to the best paint job on the market today. Give credit to VWs new state of the art production facility. Great job VW!

  • Try and buy it - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I have tried almost all of the new 2006 sedans in the same price range. The Jetta was the last one. So I try the Jetta 2.0T...after 5 miles my decision was made. I cant get out of this car. This car is just the deal of the year. Almost all the new techonology is made for the driver. The engine is superb and brakes are powerfull. ESP is very helpfull and it is a great safety feature, and the DSG transmission makes you feel like a super driver. The interior is well designed and comfort is like many other pricy cars. I have had no problems with my Jetta. People that rate this cars build quality and reliability less than 9 should list the problems they had. Facts talk better than imagination.

  • On the CR used car to avoid list - Great! - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This car has so many engineering deficiencies, that result in so many expensive repairs just to keep it running, that CR in April 2011, put it on the used car to avoid list. The four areas with 3 to 5 times the incidence of repair for an average vehicle were: Cooling system - Engine cooling fan cassette & related wiring goes out at around 60K to 80K miles $800 to $1,200; A/C system, compressor seizes; Body Hardware failures - window regulators, door latches, trunk latches; and I think, major Fuel System issues. On my car, it wouldnt hold an on center track - cant be fixed, design flaw, making extended highway travel fatiguing; stalls without warning at idle - problem cant be identified.

This is a great car - the only drawbacks are its limited number features. You cant order an 06 model at this point so had to take what I could get. It is still a great car that looks good and is great on fuel. Its acceleration is definetly there, though it takes a little while to get going from a dead stop. It has plenty of acceleration so long as you arent racing.

  • I So Much Prefer My Husbands 2002 Buick LeSabre - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I own a 2006 VW Jetta TDI and my husband owns a 2002 Buick LeSabre. My vehicle has less than 140,000 miles whereas his has 165,000 miles. Other than front wheel bearings, he has had no major repair issues. Before my VW reached 100,000 miles, I needed to replace the engine turbo and have my manual transmission (not the clutch but the synchro "gearing") rebuilt. I now have learned that the vehicle has an engine "belt," not "chain," which needs to be changed every 80,000 to 100,000 miles at a mere cost of $1,700 (inclusive of water pump which, because of its location creating labor costs, has been recommended to be replaced now as well)! The black sprayed knobs on the radio had peeled off within two years after purchase, and the dealership says that they cannot be repaired short of buying a new radio. There are many "blind spots" when driving the VW chilling dependence upon rear and side mirrors when changing lanes. The Buick has great visibility. Those who say German engineering is superior to American ought take heed that, in my opinion, such generalization is false. Next time I buy General Motors!

  • Finest Diesel. Ever - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

My TDI is just unbelievable. I have maintained MPG of 38-40 city/41-46 hwy. I truly believe that it runs better in cooler weather. Had never owned a VW before and I was a little skeptical. Not anymore. I have had to answer many questions at the pump from curious onlookers. Smooth ride with great handling. Replaced tires at about 31K with a 4 set of Goodyear. My wife drives the Mercedes Bluetec Diesel and whenever I tell my kids that we are leaving to go somewhere I will say to go and get in the "best" car. The get immediately in the Jetta. Go VW.

  • Typical German Engineering- Good and Bad - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is my daughters car, and to be clear, we bought it used in 2012 (70k miles) for $6k, so I didnt and dont expect miracles. Drove great, like most good German vehicles, but in my opinion, just like my wifes Mercedes, there always seems to be funny noises in the engine randomly that turn out to be pricey repairs. By 90k miles: Replaced transmission ($3K) Water pump and tension pulleys $1500 CV boots/ joint- $1k heat blanket (Inside engine on the hood) $300 Brakes 2X $800 each time.

  • Wonderful, wonderful car – Best Ive ever owned. - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I am staggered by the negative reviews, because that in no way been my experience. With 90,000 miles and counting, I have only had to replace two light bulbs and a brake master cylinder – thats everything since I bought the car in 2005.5. The highway MPGs are consistently above 35-36 without any effort. The car is incredibly comfortable and handles very well for a FWD car. I frequently take it up to the mountain for snow activities without traction tires or chains, and it takes is like a champ – trucks look stunned when I pass them effortlessly. Incredibly safe, reliable, and cheap to own and run – Ill certainly buy another one (I have my eye on a TDI SportWagen).

  • Best Car I Ever Owned - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I purchased the GLI just over two weeks ago, and I have put over a thousand miles on it because I cant stop driving it. I love the way the car handles, performs, and looks. You get a real German sports car feeling with the GLI that just cant be matched for the price. The car seems to have endless power, and handles like its on rails. I bought the base model with the plaid cloth, and had the dealer install the iPod adapter, and feel that Im not missing a thing. I have owned many Hondas, and traded a 2005 Altima for the GLI, and there is just no comparison.
