This Year's Model Updates:

Two new trim levels join the Jetta lineup for 2006: the upscale 2.0T and the sporty GLI. Both feature a 200-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and both can be equipped with VW's trick DSG direct shift gearbox. All Jettas besides the Value Edition now feature standard alloy wheels, and torso-protecting rear-seat side airbags are newly optional.

  • Nicely engineered/poorly built - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive had the car around 9 months. Its a great road trip car - with the TDI, Ive gotten nearly 700 miles on a tank of fuel. It corners nicely and mileage has been over 40 mpg on every tank. Gets over 50 on highway. Pleased this car even starts up in below zero weather this past winter. The DSG transmission is very nice - the diesel/trans combo is the best part of this car. Trip computer is nice, too. But the stereo stinks for $25k car, little/no sound from front speakers. Also not a fan of the "leatherette" seating surfaces - drivers seat already showing wear at 9,000 miles (and Im only 150 lbs.) Overall, my 01 wolfsburg was more fun, but equally unreliable. Why do I keep buying VWs?

  • Jetta Rocks - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

The car handles extremely well. The 2.5L engine has plenty of power for the every day driver. I like the positioning of the controls. A little feature that is handy is the lane change indicators that blink three times by just tapping the turn signal lever in the appropriate direction.

  • VW means poor quality - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

After owning 4 Honda vehicles (civic and accord) i bought my son a new 2006 Jetta. I was impressed by the ride and the safety rating for the Jetta. however, now 5 years and 75K , i am stuck with a 1600.00 repair bill for a clutch repair. Apparently, the hydraulic cylinders for the clutch broke apart and soaked the clutch assembly. If the flywheel is damaged add another 600.00 to the repair cost. The care is barely paid for and the car is literally falling apart. I did call customer care at VW and received a nice apology. Dont buy a VW product!!

  • New to the VW Family and Loving It - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

After not even remotely considering a Jetta. I took co-workers suggestions and took one for a test drive. I absolutely fell in love with the car. It handles well and the features that come standard are amazing. I looked at a Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry and the Jetta surpassed them all. Not to mention the sales service that I received were excellent. This was by far the best car buying experience that I have had. I am definitely a VW Jetta fan for life. I love my Jet-Jet.

  • Former BMW Owner Converted Forever... - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I cant say enough about how this car has exceeded my expectations. It is better appointed, more comfortable, roomier and far less expensive to maintain than the three previous BMW 325s I owned. I lose only a small amount of performance and handling, but gain an overall hands down winner in value. This car gets almost exactly double the gas mileage 45 mpg vs. 22 mpg overall in the BMW. The repair bills for routine maintenance are a fraction of the insulting BMW bills I paid regularly. I never thought I would be willing to give up the driving experience I enjoyed with BMW. The Jetta is so close but I choose it as my preference with price not being a factor.

  • TDI and loving it - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Have almost 100k on this car. Its been very reliable, with only a few minor repairs here and there. Just had the timing belt changed (which has to be done at 105k miles). Im expecting to drive this for at least another 100k!

  • Couldve been great - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Purchased with approx 60 000 km and have since put 20k on the car. It has been in the shop about 9 times. Parts replaced: Turbo (3 separate visits); some clutch parts; throttle body (left me stranded); trunk latch; driver door electronics; coolant warning light issues. The dealership knows me by name. I think I got a lemon ... too bad because I like the car & have purchased a few aftermarket items for it (winter tires, roof rack, tail lights, floor mats worth about $2500). Good thing for warranty because repairs wouldve cost me a fortune. Will be trading it in for a new TDI soon.

  • Dangerous car to drive or ride in - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Purchased my 2006 Jetta TDI in July, 2006. Timing belt broke at 42,000 miles. Camshaft had to be replaced under warranty. Camshaft failed again at 150,000 miles (timing belt was fine). Camshaft failed again at 270,000 miles. Without warning car was lost power while in cruise - almost run over by tractor-trailers more than once. Research reveals an enormous camshaft problems for TDI owners. VW put a bandaid on the original camshaft failure and allowed my family to drive and ride in an unsafe vehicle. VW mgt knew they had a problem and discontinued the 1.9 TDI engine. VW should have informed 2006 TDI owners that their car could lose power without warning.

I read many of the reviews on here, and I thought that some were spot on , yet others were just people that were angry or biased, yet they did not seem to understand the car well. I am not saying that every problem experienced by others were completely false. This car does have some common issues, but all cars do. I figured that I would give my own thoughts in an objective manner. I bought a used neglected 2006 jetta 2.5, and the car turned out to be a great buy. The car had 68,000 thousands miles on it, and it had a few dents big and large scratches; so I was able to get it at a huge discount that was way below blue book value, because no one else wanted her. I found out the car was losing oil, and it had a nasty rear main seal leak. I honestly thought that all hope was last, because I was not going to spend thousands of dollars to get it fixed. As a last hope, I tried STP oil stop leak, and it actually worked. The car has 100,000 miles on it now, and it still runs great. I cannot believe how well this car runs after the abuse from previous owners. I recommend that you find a good mechanic that knows Volkswagens, and I would avoid the dealer at all costs. You just have to shop around. I also recommend to not skimp on scheduled maintenance. German cars break down too. I know a lot of people that will buy VW, because they think German cars are more reliable, then they neglect the car and have problems. Make sure that you understand this car, and the type of oil that it uses before you buy it. If you are the kind of person that plans on neglecting this car, then do not buy it. If you take care of this car, then it will take care of you by offering great fuel economy. It is not special and it still needs maintenance like all others cars. My other vehicle was a range rover, and I bought this car as my gas efficient beater. I was worried that the jetta would be too small on the inside, but it is quite roomy. The car drives very quite and smooth at high speeds. You can comfortably drive long distances in this car and not even feel uncomfortable. After all, it was built for the autobahn. The main advantage of this car, is that it balances performance with fuel quality. I am not saying that it is a sport sedan, but it is not dull and lifeless like the ford focus or some of the other competitors. The leather seats and the interior are also very nice for the price of the car. The car also handled well in the snow, and I am the kind of person that is afraid to drive in the winter without all wheel drive. The main negative with this car is the poor quality paint. The paint scratches very easily, and even when it is washed gently. I am honestly afraid to wash the car because of this issue. This complaint is seen in other reviews as well. Other euro cars that I owned did not scratch as easily. The secondary issue with this car is with the lights burning out earlier than expected. Sometimes, I think this is related to road conditions, but other times I think this has to do with the design of the bulb holder. It seems that it holds the one bulb in tight, but it allows the other one to jiggle a little bit. My tertiary compliant is with the looks of the car. I am not saying that it looks bad, it is just somewhat plain and boring. The jetta drives nice and has decent performance, so it should have some nice looks to boot. It seems that the competition is aware of this, yet VW seems completely aloof. Come on VW, make make the jetta look at little meaner and cooler. After all, sex sells right?

  • Best Budget Fun Car - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The Acura TSX and Subaru Legacy GT were the other cars that I considered. The TSX had really nice features on the inside but I was dissapointed with the performance and ride quality. It was very refined but lacked the fun factor. The Legacy GT was great, it was really fast and handled very well. I didnt like the gear shifting of the GT as it was not precise and felt rubbery. Also, I was concerned about the low gas mileage of the GT. Then we went to VW dealership and test drove the Jetta GLI, wow! Right then I knew this was the car for me. The GLI brings a smile to my face every time I drive to work in the morning. It has brought the fun factor back into the daily commute. The new GLI also has less turbo lag compared older VWs.
