This Year's Model Updates:

One of America's favorite cars is all new this year. Design goals for the 2002 Toyota Camry included larger interior packaging, reduced noise, more advanced safety features, better driving dynamics and, of course, a new standard of value.

Pros:
  • Roomy, powerful engines, plenty of safety and luxury features.
Cons:
  • High prices for XLE, costly premium features.

  • Toyota, not that great - 2002 Toyota Camry

Our Toyota Camry SE (4cylinder) has 85,000 miles on it currently. Heres what Ive had to replace over the past 5 years of ownership: 1) air conditioning condensation liquid leaked into interior cabin of car -about a 1/4 gallon of water leaked after each drive resulting in damaged carpets and sound deadening material. 2) Original tires wore out in 6,000 miles!!!! 3) Rear wheel bearings replaced 2x. 4) Reset engine light ($90) because gas cap was left off car one time after fill up.

This is our first Toyota and it is a good car but I expected better. Ride is very good and engine is very quiet. I have two issues with this car. The sweaking noices that come from the dash. The dealer has fixed some but said that these noises are normal?? The other issue I have is with the tires. For a front wheel drive this car does not like snow. I think the problem is with the tires. I requested Michelin but the dealer said the brand was not available on this model. By next winter I will need replacement tires so maybe new tires will help with winter driving.

Before this I owned a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unfortunately I was involved in an accident and had to sell it, I bought this car and I love it so far. I bought it with 99,000 miles on it. Its just about to turn over 104,000 and I love everything about it. It drives like its a brand new car. The only problem with it is there is an exhaust leak somewhere. Its fun to drive and reliable. I plan to drive it through my college career and possibly get a Tundra after that. Great car!!!

  • Still early..but so far so good - 2002 Toyota Camry

I was happy with a 98 Corolla, but it was totalled in a rear ended and decided to move up to a Camry this time. For cost and other reasons, decided to go with used one from Hertz. So far, it is working out well. But, as noted by others here, I am hearing a slight rattle in drivers side doors when it hits uneven surfaces -- seems to be worse when the car has been sitting out in the sun and plastic expands. Also noticed a slight surge on upshift and downshift, but that may just mean belts need adjusting (it has 28K). Also notice the slightly mushy breaks, but overall gives a good ride. Not happy that theres no "idiot buzzer" if you leave your lights on.

  • 8 time in the shop and still rattles - 2002 Toyota Camry

I bought this Camry expecting quality and reliability. Ive had it 2 months and have had to take it for repairs 8 times. First the rear suspension made noises. That was fixed after two tries. Then the overhead light rattled. The handles on both front doors rattle. They added foam to both doors four times and it still makes noises. Now the radio has started rattling. There is a delay between prssing the accelerator and the car moving. Toyota says signal has to be processed by the central computer. However that is dangerous in an emergency situation. And the brakes are soft by design. You have to floor it. Im selling this Toyota and never buying one again.

  • 186k Miles, 5spd Tranny the best!! Great Car! - 2002 Toyota Camry

First Owner Japan Built, I have owned this Camry since new, people talk about headbolts problems and lot of negative comments..well, my car has been different, My Camry has been the most reliable of my cars, I owed a Benz S430, a suburban, a Honda accord, and this the only car that never has given me any major issues..the most Ive done to it was the starter, main serpentine belt, cleaned the MAF sensor and Brakes..and an oil change every 3k and fuel additive every oil change works..at this mileage I do have to use an Oil additive, I notice some smog in the mornings..but using thicker oil has fixed the issue..I recommend this car with manual Transmission since is the one I drive..I dont know about automatic Tanny experiences..

  • Not Your Common Ride - 2002 Toyota Camry

I set out to buy a Saturn L200 until the salesman had us test drive the Camry and Nissan Altima. The Camry won hands down. Wow, what a difference, for $4K more. This car wraps around you and holds you in its quiet grip as it hurtles you down the highway. 4 adults just took a 2200 mile road trip in comfort. Our fuel economy ranged between 28 and 32.5 MPG. Great with gas cost between $1.53 and $1.60/gal! This vehicle has the ability to get you out of a bind on the interstate. The sound system is sufficent. Smart door locks are a little too smart. Trunk is awesome. We carried everything we needed for a week, with room to spare.

  • Great Quality - 2002 Toyota Camry

This is my first Toyota. Ive owned 21 cars over the past 30 years of driving. The camry is quiet, roomy and totaly trouble free. Just under 40,000 miles and still rides and handles like the day I brought it home from the dealer. I love the dash layout, everything in easy reach. 192 HP is more than enough for passing quick acceleration when needed.

  • I grin whenever I see it! - 2002 Toyota Camry

Ive had my new Camry for 2 weeks, and I keep looking for excuses to go places in it. Its so smooth and quiet that my daughter-in-law was surprised when we started moving -- she didnt realize Id started the engine! I think its the most fun to drive of any car Ive owned.

  • You Asked for it, you got it Toyota! - 2002 Toyota Camry

For approximately 22,000 dollars, the redesigned Camry (XLE) is as big inside as a Cadillac, comes with all of them amentities, yet comes with a sporty and somewhat firm ride. Combination highway/city driving yielded an impressive 23 mpg in the first month of driving. The JBL CD is excellent, and all controls are logically placed and easily within reach. You cant go wrong with this one! P.S. It looks even better than its expensive counterpart, the Avalon. In fact, Id call it a "Pre-Lexus."
