This Year's Model Updates:

One of America's favorite cars is all new this year. Design goals for the 2002 Toyota Camry included larger interior packaging, reduced noise, more advanced safety features, better driving dynamics and, of course, a new standard of value.

Pros:
  • Roomy, powerful engines, plenty of safety and luxury features.
Cons:
  • High prices for XLE, costly premium features.

  • An almost perfect sedan - 2002 Toyota Camry

This is a great car with only a couple of minor flaws, most notably the unimpressive front seats. Definitly not as good as a Passat or Accord. The interior style is rather pedestrian especially when compared with the Passat. Having said that, I much prefer driving this car vs my Passat. It has a superbly refined transmission and engine, is very quiet and has a ride that makes you think you are in a luxury sedan. Much quieter than the Passat. Compared with my moms BMW 528 the ride is as good on the highway but not as thrilling on two lane highways. But at less than half the price it is a much better value!!

im so happy with this car, this car takes care of all my needs a perfect car just for me =). i test drove the rest ( nissan maxima, nissan altima, and the new 2003 honda accord) but the camry is the best overall car. i wanted to buy the 2003 honda accord but its butt ugly, the ugliest car honda has ever made, whoever designed it should be fired.

  • Great Car for the money - 2002 Toyota Camry

I have owned this car for 6 years. I bought it with 24k miles. The only problems I have had are the transmission started to slip some and cause hesitation. I had the tranny flushed and this solved the problem. The paint is now peeling on the drivers front and rear quarter panel but I do not have a garage and it has gone through several storms. Overall a great car with no problems at 107K miles to date. I bought this car certified and I recommend that very highly.

  • Nice car overall. - 2002 Toyota Camry

Great car except that I can never get fully comfortable in the drivers seat (even though it has electronic adjustments) and am always adjusting it. Also the V6 engine is not as smooth as I expected. Sometimes I can actually see the tachometer drop slightly and then come back up a gain without altering the pressure on the gas peddle. I also had one problem out of the showroom. A heard a "rattle" from under the hood at highway speeds. After bringing to the dealer twice (and a little pushing) they found that a bolt holding the power steering motor was "not torqued to specification" and tightened it up. The rattle is now gone.

  • Ugly but beautiful - 2002 Toyota Camry

I always thought the 02 Camrys were ugly as sin, but I dont care about that when I buy cars anyway. In every other way this car is absolutely superb. Im at 112k miles with no significant problems. Only major expense so far was timing belt swap but that was a maintenance item not a repair. With the 4 cylinder engine the pickup is acceptable and the mileage is extremely good considering it is a pretty decent sized car. Im going to go to about 200k on this one and then buy another new Camry - I suppose Im due around 2011 or so. Engine light just went on last week and the code says its the catalytic - that will be a little expensive but cant complain at this mileage.

  • Odd things - 2002 Toyota Camry

So far the car is super nice riding, fun to drive and quiet???? but there is a rattle in my dash, a vibration in my front end like the other guy described and I smell the Hot catalytic sulphur smell BAD!!! The gas mileage is so poor, but as Americans I guess we sacrifice comfort and looks for the little things that Honda has mastered.. Such as decent mileage, power off the line, not at 5000rpm etc.

  • My only complaint - 2002 Toyota Camry

Besides the dealer themselves... Younger Toyota is notoriously snippy and they cater to their Mercedes Customers... Anyway, the seats are so short, that they do not support your legs well. After a few hours in the seat, your legs really hurt and since I have long legs anyway, this is a bad feature. Also the feul Economy is less then stellar. If you commute a lot, I recommend sacrificing horsepower to the gods of the Gas Pump.

  • good car but expensive and unattractive - 2002 Toyota Camry

My mother purchased a white 2002 Camry LE V-6, the inside did not look as nice as it did in pictures from magazines and the seats arent very comfortable, but the sound system is very nice. The car was very peppy, smooth and has been very reliable so far (only about 3000 miles on it) I dont really like the front and rear headlights, the front headlights are too sharp and not matched with the dull bodysize and the rear lights are too big and looks as if it is placed too high...We paid more than 25,000 dollars and did not even get a sunroof and power/leather seats...Overall...it is a nice and roomy car but I think there are better alternatives.

  • 225,000 miles strong! - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

After 225,000 miles, it still runs like new. No noise, leaks, or oil burning. Ive only had to replace tires, battery, and timing belt (recommended every 90,000 miles). The seats are still very comfortable. There have been no other repairs.
