This Year's Model Updates:

One of America's favorite cars is all new this year. Design goals for the 2002 Toyota Camry included larger interior packaging, reduced noise, more advanced safety features, better driving dynamics and, of course, a new standard of value.

Pros:
  • Roomy, powerful engines, plenty of safety and luxury features.
Cons:
  • High prices for XLE, costly premium features.

  • 8 time in the shop and still rattles - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

I bought this Camry expecting quality and reliability. Ive had it 2 months and have had to take it for repairs 8 times. First the rear suspension made noises. That was fixed after two tries. Then the overhead light rattled. The handles on both front doors rattle. They added foam to both doors four times and it still makes noises. Now the radio has started rattling. There is a delay between prssing the accelerator and the car moving. Toyota says signal has to be processed by the central computer. However that is dangerous in an emergency situation. And the brakes are soft by design. You have to floor it. Im selling this Toyota and never buying one again.

  • Stripped Pistons - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

I have been driving my Camry for 6 years. Very few issues until i hit 90k miles. My check engine light was on due to engine issue. Dealership said no big deal EVAP system not an issue. I had the whole engine drained and cleaned. 50 miles later, BING, light on. I took it to an independent service provider and they told me something is not right. Then at 130k miles, the engine pistons shoot through the casing into the combustion chamber. That could have easily started an oil fire that would have sparked into the gas chamber. The mechanic said Toyota has a serious engine design problem. Google Toyota engine issues, it is not an isolated issue. Toyota is waiting for another blow.

  • Worst Purchase Ever - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

I purchased this car used at the time it had around 60,000 miles. The reason for this purchase is because the great talk about them, I found out different. At about 85,000 miles the dealer put in a new transmission, because I was having slipping problems. Round 95,000 the dealer put a new lower end in my motor. The check engine light comes on and off at random, the suspension is rough, gets around terrible in any wet (rain, snow) conditions, it has terrible fuel economy (hwy miles) I am lucky to get anything over 25 miles to the gallon. All I can say is thank goodness the transmission and engine were covered since it was a Toyota Certified purchase.

  • Ill tell them to keep it, honestly... - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

The brake pedal rattles when I depress it and also makes a noise. They told me this is normal and I have to live with it. I will take the car back and let them live with it. Also the dash rattles. The rear panel rattles and the plastic siding by the left passenger foot came off already. The right rear door stick and the trunk barely opens with the remote. I am soooo dissapointed. Its actually a 2003 LE but they did not have this option here yet. I hate thinking of paying for this piece of... for 5 years.

  • Sludged engine - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

After only 40,000 miles, engine went thru three quarts of oil in 1,200 miles. Took to dealership. sludged engine. needed new engine at $6,000. Although still under warranty, dealership would not honor warranty. called corporate Toyota. Said they were very aware of problem - "well documented." They even have an Oil Sludge Team. Never recd call back. Called dealer again and denied the warranty. Before you buy a Toyota go to any search engine on Internet and type in Toyota sludge.

  • WORST CAMRY - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

This is my 3rd and LAST Camry. I previously had an 86 and an 91 and I am disgusted. The Seats are uncomfortable, the dash is to unusual and the styling is ugly. I do not know why I bought this car and I know I never will buy another Toyota. I should have bought the Honda when I had the chance.

  • Never Again! - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

I went from a 99 Accord V6 to the Camry SE 4cyl. The SE V6 with all the option packages that whomever adds (dealer or manuf.), was out of my price range. Although not lacking in power, the quality of the vehicle in general stinks!,Squeaks, rattles, groans, fit and finish issues, etc. Beware of the "performance tires". They don’t like cold and snow.I ended up spending $600 for new tires. The dealer told me to call Toyota in CA. who basically told me that no, the tires werent designed for snow and ice conditions and told me that I didnt research the technical data on the car and refused me reimbursement! Toyotas customer service motto should read, "Buyer Beware"!

  • the car I wish I had not bought - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

I have had to replace the tires twice- on top of the tires that came on my car-I am not pleased- my steering wheel squeeks like mad and my brakes have started sounding off to. I still owe too much to trade without giving it away- I seriously doubt I will ever buy another Toyota.

  • Sold it and will not buy again - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

Owned it, bought it to the Toyota - biult the best. I will not buy another. I have owned a few Toyota over the years and none has even been better then any of my Dometic brand car owned. I gave this car away and bought a Subaru and it has been 1000s time better then this Toyota. The power and fit of the Subaru.

  • not what they used to be - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

Toyota along with honda are not what they used to be. They are made in the usa and are not built as they were 10- 20 years ago. I own a 2003 honda accord with many unexceptable problems such as head gasket failure and electrical problems. My 2002 Camry is in the shop as we speak for a new transmission, and have already replaced a power window motor at just over 38000 and i am a conservative driver. My chevrolet avalanche has 42000 and has never seen a repair shop. dont let a 20-30 yr old reputation fool you please. American cars have stepped up to the task of quality.
