This Year's Model Updates:

One of America's favorite cars is all new this year. Design goals for the 2002 Toyota Camry included larger interior packaging, reduced noise, more advanced safety features, better driving dynamics and, of course, a new standard of value.

Pros:
  • Roomy, powerful engines, plenty of safety and luxury features.
Cons:
  • High prices for XLE, costly premium features.

  • Sludged engine - 2002 Toyota Camry

After only 40,000 miles, engine went thru three quarts of oil in 1,200 miles. Took to dealership. sludged engine. needed new engine at $6,000. Although still under warranty, dealership would not honor warranty. called corporate Toyota. Said they were very aware of problem - "well documented." They even have an Oil Sludge Team. Never recd call back. Called dealer again and denied the warranty. Before you buy a Toyota go to any search engine on Internet and type in Toyota sludge.

I love the external appearence, but the cost to fix is very pricey. I put lots of miles on in a year and after hitting 90k a coil went bad causing a O^2 sensor and catalytic converter went bad. The camry has two O^2 sensors, one costs $160-180 but the other costs $360!!! In all it cost me $1200 to get it back on the road. The steering has always squeaked for me at low speeds (generally during parking) but other than that it has been a great car. I now have 135k on it and the above issue is the only one I have had. I replaced my brake pads at 115k and they were very easy to do. Oil filter is a little hard to get to, but all in all things are easily accessable.

  • Best car I have owned - 2002 Toyota Camry

This is the 9th car that I have owned, both foreign and domestic, and this is the best, most comfortable car I have owned. All of my cars have been manual, and this is the slickest tranny that I have driven.

  • Good family car - 2002 Toyota Camry

The car is all the good things people say it is. I prefer the conservative styling to flashier models on the road. My car had two minor defects -- The rubber lining on one door was loose and needed to be pushed back into place by me. The plastic covering on the automatic transmission lever is loose and needs glue. When I drive over a serious pothole there is the slightest hint of the front door flexing. Not quite a rattle, but lets see in a couple years

  • Going Strong - 2002 Toyota Camry

I bought the car from someone at 114k miles in 2013, now 2016 I have 258k. Ive not had any major issues with the car, the most is getting a new radiator about a year and a half ago. Its currently burning oil, but its a 2002 and I drive a lot.

  • Excellent value for the price - 2002 Toyota Camry

This is an excellent car for the price. I drive both freeway and city miles and find the fuel economy excellent--at least 25 miles per gallon.

  • almost perfect - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

I test drove a Camry LE, 4 cyl. automatic and a Camry SE V6 automatic. I fell in love with the Camry LE, 4 cyl. and purchased it in early February. It has plenty of power to merge on to freeways here and more than enough oomph to manuvere around traffic so I felt the V6 didnt add that much to the performance. I also preferred the Camry LEs traditionally tasteful interior to the SEs more metallic tones. So far, its been almost perfect.
