This Year's Model Updates:

One of America's favorite cars is all new this year. Design goals for the 2002 Toyota Camry included larger interior packaging, reduced noise, more advanced safety features, better driving dynamics and, of course, a new standard of value.

Pros:
  • Roomy, powerful engines, plenty of safety and luxury features.
Cons:
  • High prices for XLE, costly premium features.

  • 2002 bad valve guides, expensive! - 2002 Toyota Camry

We bought this car new & expected to drive it 20 years. At about 100,000 miles valve guides are leaking oil and the estimate is $2,714.00 to fix it. Also front brakes are not that good for weight of car. We are considering selling it. We are really not happy with Toyota. They would not provide any compensation for an engine that should have had no major problems until at least 300,000 miles.

Aside from a few expensive annoyances, the SE was fun to drive. Toyota makes a great family car with the sporty look, but it needed some tweaking. Based on prior Camry ownership, Im disappointed in the 02 SE. Major repairs on this car were a bit more frequent than I expected from a Toyota. Maybe the new 07 comes with better results. I may give Toyota another try.

After buying previous vehicles that seem to break down before they are paid off, we wanted to end that cycle and invest in a car that we could keep for awhile. Thats how we chose our used 2002 Camry LE! We have found it delightful to drive (after driving a minivan for years!), powerful (its a 4 cylinder) enough to scoot out into traffic, roomy to hold 5 adults comfortably and quiet ride on the road! It looks like a smaller car on the outside, but all of our Honda- owner friends are amazed at the roominess the Camry has inside! As you can tell, we are VERY pleased!

  • Spongy Brakes - 2002 Toyota Camry

We have owned this Camry since March 2003. We traded a 96 Camry in and it was a much better vehicle. The 96 was superior in almost everyway. We have had numerous problems. Squeaky belt, wind noise, water pump failed at 37K miles. The paint is thin and can be seen through. Toyota should be ashamed to sell a vehicle with such poor brakes. They are spongy and offer no feel, almost as if they are too small for the car. The car does not have ABS and perhaps that would offer some additonal confidence.

  • Love My Camry - 2002 Toyota Camry

I purchased this New 2002 Camry in October, 2001, and have been pretty much delighted with it. Issues Ive had include creaky steering wheel, door trim replaced (under warranty), 2 sets of tires, battery and water pump replacement. Still on the original brakes - have taken it in twice for new brakes and was told didnt need them. Right now am experiencing white smoke from the tailpipe at initial start, but dont consider that a problem (yet). I plan to drive this car until the wheels fall off!

  • What a poor car! - 2002 Toyota Camry

2002 Camry SE V6 has a good exterior, lots of power & acceleration and a reasonable price, but.. From the begining its had a front end vibration that has not been diagnosed. There is a clunking in the transmission and the car will not accelerate when the engine is cold. Theres no response from the engine or the car starts then stops then starts, etc. on acceleration. Throttle housing has a defect & I must run it 15 minutes in park when its cold to get it to move. Throttle response gets worse worse as the car ages. Zero traction in wet or snowy weather. Steering is "wobbly". The power seat no longer adjusts properly.

  • Uncomfortable Front Seats - 2002 Toyota Camry

Im wondering if anyone else has a problem with there front seats being uncomfortable. The seam in the middle of the back has a wire behind it, its like leaning back with a 1 inch rope behind your back. Its very uncomfortable !

"Salsa Red Pearl" 2002 Camry LE, 2.4L, first year that it came with a timing chain, not a timing belt) and automatic transmission. Im 61 and fit comfortably. In daily commute driving, I average 28.5 mpg combined hwy/city on 87 octane gas (Melbourne, FL), and recently got 36 mpg Hwy between Warner Robbins GA and Melbourne FL (I strictly observe the 70 MPH speed limit). Some Camry years are known for leaking valve guide seals at about 70K miles - this one is no exception. Valvolines high mileage oil has virtually eliminated this after about 4,000 miles use though. Lastly, this is one of the easiest cars to drive that I have ever driven - steering & pedals require very little effort.
