This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

  • Decent Entry Level Luxury Car - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Ive had my X-Type for two years. It handles well. Not quick when accelerating until you get over 2500rpms. Handles fantastic in snow. Ive had to rebuild one of the brake calipers. Every imaginable lightbulb has gone out (replaced easily and cheaply). Overall it is reliable, but not super comfortable on long trips. Gas mileage is so-so. Its a head-turner, but I quickly realized Id like a car that rides smoother and handles better. Suspension feels stiff. Great deal for the money though minus some minor annoyances at times. When its freshly cleaned, I do sit up straighter in my seat...Its a Jag, hardly anyone has one! Fit for a queen, affordable (if you buy used) for everyone.

  • A lot of car and style for the price - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I looked at the C class Mercedes, the Audi A4, and the BMW 3 series and for the price the X type is by far the best value. Throw in all-wheel drive and it was a done deal. The car looks great, handles well, has excellent braking and rides very smooth while touring on the highway.

Great Looks. If only they could make a car worth the $$. My car has been in the shop more than 45 days total. My MAIN complaint about the car is the amount of road noise and rattling (doors & dash). They have a design problem with the front heater vents; they pop-up and will not stay in place. The other problems I have had with our car is gas tank issue (service advisory), gas gauge, manual trans issues when cold, drivers interior door (re-design on clips). My recommendation is DONT buy. Better quality available for the same price. If you want the cat on the hood, look into the S-Type or higher. I feel like we paid $35,000 for a YUGO most days.

  • Beautiful, powerful cat - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

4000 miles without absolutely any problems. Handles beautifully on all terrain and weather (better than Imprezza); at 3000rpms+ lot of smooth power. Manual transmission works perfectly. Spacious, very comfortable interior. Huge trunk. Great audio. Complaints about being "spartan" "plastic" are ludicrous (less so than Mercedes or BMWs). Classic, beautifully designed car. Dealership service excellent, first-rate. Best experience ever buying a car.

I have been completely satisfied with my new X type. The dealership in Dallas was great including the salesperson. You need to drive this car.

After a reveiw of Audi a4, VW Passat, Infiniti G35(horrible dealer experience) , Acura TL Type S,Volvo s60 and Lexus IS 300. The JAG was a more complete package with a more elegant persona that fit my wants.

Then look elsewhere. Jaguar entices people with a low initial MSRP, but add anything that you feel a Jaguar should have and your in the high 30s. Interior is beautiful, probably finest in class. 2.5 engine is lacking but not abysmal. Ride is pleasant. Even if your budget allows for a fully loaded car, youre better off with a German nameplate if such things appeal to you, which it does just about everyone. I understand how the style convinces the buyer, but the reliability on long commutes would worry me a great deal. BMW does a much better job with value and quality. Just my impression based on extensive research and test drive.

  • I love my X-type - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I love my Jagaur X-Type. My model has the sport package and is a 5 speed. It is great in adverse weather as it went through a Maine winter. It is a pure joy to drive - quiet, smooth, handles great, and is very comfortable. The trunk is very large for a car this size and the seats that fold down are easy to use. Overall I love this car. Worth every penny!

  • WOW!!! - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

God! How much do I love this car! I had been looking and test driving cars since October of 2001. I test drove the BMW, the Acura, the Benz, the Audi, the Cadillac CTS, the Saab. But none of them as great as the X-type. I thought that the BMW was too small, the Acura was just ok, the Benz was pathetic and the Saab was too expensive. The guy at the Cadillac dealership was one with really bad attitude, while the only problem with the Audi was it was smaller. I settled on the Jag because of it offering most of the features that I wanted. Boy! It drives like a dream. I really dont know what the editorial reviewer was thinking, but this car definitely rates in the high 9s.

Rides like a dream. Brakes are excellent. Corners great. I have the small engine,(2.5)so I didnt expect spectacular 0-60 stats. Navigation system works superbly. Really happy with the Baby-J.
