This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

  • Love my Jag! - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

This is my first Jaguar and I love it more and more each day. The car is very luxurious, moreso than the bmw, lexus and mercedes we test drove. So far no, problems, but we are worried about the reliability after reading the edmunds report.

  • Fun to Drive - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

This car is a lot more fun to drive than I expected. The 3.0L five speed really takes off. Comfort is great, sound is even better. Top notch audio system.

Trouble from the start. I have never taken a trip without visiting a Jaguar Dealer for repairs. My current dealer has tried to fix all the problems, but they seem to be totally overwhelmed with all the problems. They now refuse to even try to repair. The car is still under warrenty, but Jaguar has walked away.I talked to the dealer about other models, but they say they are even less reliable. Bad News!!!!

  • My 2002 X-Type - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Had several frustrating "I hate this car!" growing pains initially, as it was the first model year. But after the first year and getting all the issues taken care of, no problems. Fantastic, solid, beautiful car...great value. And after 3 years it still catches peoples eye. I get several comments on it.

  • I love this Cat and I am a dog man - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

This car is simply excellent. It looks great, drives like a dream and is comfortable as well. The all wheel drive and optional sports shift (push a button) let you play formula 1 or old foggie driving. As the Army would say, be all you can be and drive this cat.

  • Wow GREAT Performance for 2.5S - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

I purchased the jag with 56k mi about 1 1/2 yr ago and I was blown away on how well the performance of this car it sounds like an American muscle car when I punch it to pass uphill or entering freeway. Its fast for a V6 and it does roar. Now Im hooked on jag! The only thing is when I needed oil pan gasket fix its hard to get into the pan without taking apart everything from the bottom and labor was expensive plus parts $1000. When I purchased it I did not know that it was an AWD and my gas mileage is poor in mix driving but you can get good mileage on the freeway.

  • Great Little Car - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Now a two Jaguar Family. We shopped around Audi A4Quattro, BMW 325XI, and X- type. The Jag dealer was the most friendly. The BMW dealer would give us the option to purchase the right to order our new BMW sometime this fall. The X-Type was competetive in all respects to the Audi and BMW. In fact, specs for Jag are superior. The warranty, free maintaince for 48mos/50K, and our dealers free loaner car made the purchase a no brainer. Great little car with all the features to be superior to BMW and Audi.

  • X-Terrific - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Used this vehicle in snow, rain, and dry conditions and it has performed beautifully in all! Great car for notherners who have to brave the winter wonderland. Beautiful vehicle, smooth ride and great interior.

  • Never again will I buy another Jaguar - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

I will never buy another Jaguar. I have owned my car for 3 years and have had it in the shop for countless things (in fact, it needs to be taken in again but I just dont care anymore). Thank God the dealership would not sell it to me without an extended warranty otherwise I would be in BIG trouble. I cant even begin to tell you about all the issues with it. And, to make matters worse, I am trying to trade it in for a newer, more reliable vehicle and I have been the laughing stock of every dealership I have been to. I am about $10,000 upside down in it which is making negotiations very difficult. I will never, ever recommend one of these cars. They are crap.

  • Jaguar X-Type: Long and Short - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Disagree with Edmunds review of the new X-Type Jag. Edmunds got a lemon. There are some caveats and no car is perfect. I had to have a driveshaft replaced in under 500 miles, and a headlame as well, but the auto now works well and is great fun to drive. Much prefer my BabyJag to BMW, Mercedes, or Lexus.
