Overview & Reviews
Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.
- Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
- Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

take the good with the bad - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By kmac - November 21 - 11:26 pmI purchased my X-type a couple years used and I believe I got a great value for the money, thanks to the high rate of depreciation on Jags. The car has been fairly reliable for me; it looks like it cost 3 times more than I paid for it; and the AWD is great in snow. The the downside of owning a used Jag is that once the warranty runs out (along with the included maintenance), upkeep is costly, especially at the dealership where $500 to $1,000 for scheduled maintenance is normal. I would say that if you value the "cool factor" more than such practical considerations as reliability, resale value, maintenance costs, etc., then this is great car for the money - if you bought used that is.

X-Type Excels - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By Benes - September 17 - 11:26 pmI have had the X-Type for 3 years and it is a pleasure to drive. It is very confortable and handles beautifully. A real driving machine! There is a little hesitation when accelerating quickly; however, this is improved by not using high test gasoline.

Transmission problems for the past 2yrs. - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By Gilfigga - September 14 - 4:10 amMy 2002 X-Type just went out of warranty in March, 2008. This morning I took the car to the shop because the transmission began to slip. For the past 2 years, Ive been seeing a gear fault light but the service center could not duplicate the message. Now the transmission is gone and it will cost me close to $9K to get it fixed. The car is not even worth that much anymore! Where is the reliability for buying such an expensive car?

Enjoy it every day - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By C.O. - September 3 - 10:00 amHad my jag for 4 months and I still give it second glances every time I see it. Drives like a sports car, but has the refined look that only a jag can have.

The worst car Ive ever owned - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By Ed - August 15 - 5:43 pmMy car loves to spend time getting service. Its been at the dealer for service 10 months of the 48 months Ive owned the car. I cant remember the many new parts it has but you can say they have rebuilt the thing. Nobody can deny is beautiful but is a piece of junk.

Why would you want this car? - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By Jgrnaut - July 22 - 2:00 amThe name Jaguar conjures up images of refined elegance and bold styling. After driving the X-Type, the words Jaguar and “refined elegance” seems to fit together like Shaq in a Mazda Miata. When you sit in the cockpit, you understand why it is priced so cheap (for a Jaguar.) I think there was a shortage of quality leather when the car was built because most of the surroundings were made of plastic, high quality plastic I’m sure, but never the less plastic. Once I stepped on the gas it seemed like I had 4 sumo-wrestlers in the back and a few in the trunk. On the good side, the key is really neat and it has that cool leaping jaguar on the hood.

Worst Car Ive Ever Owned - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By Ted Watson - July 21 - 8:13 amI purchased this car new in August of 02. The first week set the tone - it went back to the shop for a leaky oil cooler. Since then it has been in the shop 20+ times for a total of months and months. It the last year alone it has stranded me three times. You name it, its had it repaired/replaced - oil leaks (still), new front and rear suspension, radio, gauges replaced, computers, xeon headlights, door panels, cooling hoses, door latches (over and over), rattles, squeaks, etc, etc. My warranty is up in 4K miles, so Im car shopping. However, I will never, ever, buy another Jaguar!!!!!

Baby Jag - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By mary Turner - July 1 - 3:16 pmThe car is exceptional!! What I dont understand is why only the negative responses seem to be posted. This car is not the typical Jag. It is sporty and fun. All the safety features are very comforting. It is all that and then some.

The Awesome Cat - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By great kitty - June 12 - 2:00 amJaguar did it right. In a pool full of Mercedes and BMWs, Jaguar really stands out as one of most gorgeous cars on the road today. I have driven Mercedes and BMW and nothing feels like a Jaguar. I was never able to afford a Jaguar until now, and I Love it so much. The old rumor of Jaguars always being in the shop is not true now. The car rides great, handles wonderful and is simply a delight to look at the interior. the five speed transmission is also great.

An Excellent Automobile - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
By davidb - June 9 - 8:00 pmThis automobile is excellent except for three drawbacks: there is minimal space in the back for passengers, gas mileage is very poor, the wheels cannot be easily removed, they stick to the rotors. It would be impossible to remove a wheel in an emergency. Otherwise an excellent car, well built and reliable.
