This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

  • Great little car - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I bought this car because of its curb appeal and AWD. To date and 55000 miles later, I am not disappointed. I opted for standard transmission and the 3.0 engine and the car revs nicely when needed. Not a problem uphill or to pass at all. Gas mileage is a matter of driving styles, the Jag gives me 21-23 city and 23-25 highway. The car stills turns heads wherever I drive it

Smooth and very quiet transmission, nimble and sporty pickup, and the leaping cat on the bonnet looks gorgeous !

  • Edmunds is WAY OFF! - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

The car drives like a dream...Edmunds puts it down like a hot potato and I cant understand why...they seem to be in love with BMW 3s (which I used to drive) and cant get over them (geez)...anyways...drive one yourself...if you dig driving the streets like a rocket, then go for the BMW...if you like a sporty, great handling, powerful, classy, CAR (ie., ages from 30-65), then drive the Jaguar...

I traded in my 2001 Lincoln LS for this Jag. Overall Iam very happy with it. The Jag dealership cannot compare to the excellent customer service to the Lincoln one though. My impression was that they are kinda snobby, and they looked at me kinda funny as I assume they dont think a 25 year old can afford a jag. 2 hours later I drove off the lot with one.

  • Need re-engineering - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

What a disappointment this car is. A lot of cheesy engineering. Transmission died at 45000 miles, cost $7200. Need new brake job at 42000 miles, cost $1,200. Can only be done by Jag or you can expect to hear brake noise, even with genuine pads and rotors. The vent cover pops up all the time near the windshield and makes noise, the driver seat moves forward 1/4" - 1/2" went stopping, the middle console rocks side-to-side like its going to come apart.

  • A victim of misjudging - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

My X-Type has treated me very well; power and handling are always there when I need it. On the road, Im confidant of the ability to pass someone even if they try to accelerate to close the gap. Sitting in this car, you really feel at one with the machine as the seat wraps around your body reassuringly, connecting you with the road as the roar of the engine actually sounds like the primal growl of a wild, angry jaguar. The steering wheel allows you to feel your way without becoming disconnected from the road as you do with many luxury cars. We have to remember, to judge this car in the same class as other high-end cars would be unfair. This is an entry level car delivering above par results.

  • Possible lemon - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Within 12,000 miles the transmission went. I had to be towed via flatbed truck after only 14 months of ownership. The car never had any pep. Now it needs a totally new transmission at 12,000 miles. I should have stayed with the Camry.

  • Beyond my Expectations! - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I have now owned this car for 3 weeks. I was apprehensive while awaiting delivery. All I can say is that I love it more every day. It has awesome power and handling. Mine was not cheap as it is the Sport with many options, but I feel that for the money it is the classiest car on the road. BMW and Benz make great cars too, but there are way too many of them on the road. Elegance and distinction were always the hallmark of Jaguar and the tradition continues with the X-type.

I love the exterior styling, the performance and the comfort. The navigation system is a real winner for guiding you to your destination as well as finding cafe, hotels, etc., along the way. The xenon headlamps, promimity waring system, and rain sensing wipers are nice touches. The Alpine stero can simply blow you away. Although I have dual bike racks for my X-Type (evidently rare for Jaguars), Ive never used them. The only negative has been a couple of logic chips that have had to be re- programmed. And the navigation system bumps the exterior temperature LCD to a place thats difficult to read. The Jaguar service has been fantastic.
