This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

We purchased our 2002 x-type after leasing it for three years. During those three years we have had an interior water leak from the vent filter on the dash, pop ups of the vent, interior wood replacement, drivers door panel replaced, coolant hose prung a leak - twice, bearing replaced in suspension, squeaks, brakes replaced, worn tires- we have practically rebuilt the car from the ground up. Every time we bring it in we swear its the last time - but the beauty of it draws us back. Great looking car - but overall, a lemon. I would buy another BMW over a Jag any day- much more reliable.

This is the biggest piece of junk i have ever bought. it started breaking down the 2nd day after i bought it. its has been in the shop 23 times. Warranty just ran out and we are getting rid of this car as quickly as possible. i have had problems with brakes, transmission, ignition, main computer, door panels. My wife and baby have been stranded 3 times because the car wouldnt start it would say security enabled and the only way to reset it is at the dealership. which is 100 miles from where we live. When i had problems with the brakes it went on for 3 months they had to get the engineers who designed the brakes and fly them into the dealership to finally fix them. Bottom line its junk

  • X-Type Dissapointment - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Good Points: Engine very responsive, great sound system, good visability, excellent handling. Bad Points: Many rattles and squeeks, very loud road and wind noise, breaks are also loud. Overall quality is poor, especially for a car costing over $40k. This was an impulse purchase. I did a lot of research and I was intending on buying an Audi A4 or A6. I regret my decision every day I drive to work.

Leased this vehicle hoping that Jaguar has improved the build quality with the assurance that I would be able to give the car back in 3 years if I was unsatisfied. Unfortunately... or Fortunately... mine was a lemon! Returning the Vehicle after only 6 months!!!

The car was in the shop for 10 mechanical defects, trans, compressor, drive shaft, power steering rack, steering column. Vent grids came off, headlight washers came off. The dealer tells me they are swamped with this car for repairs. It was bought back by Jag. BEWARE!!!!!

  • Jaguar--Never again - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I had to trade it in for a Lexus after it had spent almost a month out of 12 month in service department. (transmission failed, electronics, engine failed).

  • Disappointed - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Trouble from the start. I have never taken a trip without visiting a Jaguar Dealer for repairs. My current dealer has tried to fix all the problems, but they seem to be totally overwhelmed with all the problems. They now refuse to even try to repair. The car is still under warrenty, but Jaguar has walked away.I talked to the dealer about other models, but they say they are even less reliable. Bad News!!!!

  • Never again will I buy another Jaguar - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I will never buy another Jaguar. I have owned my car for 3 years and have had it in the shop for countless things (in fact, it needs to be taken in again but I just dont care anymore). Thank God the dealership would not sell it to me without an extended warranty otherwise I would be in BIG trouble. I cant even begin to tell you about all the issues with it. And, to make matters worse, I am trying to trade it in for a newer, more reliable vehicle and I have been the laughing stock of every dealership I have been to. I am about $10,000 upside down in it which is making negotiations very difficult. I will never, ever recommend one of these cars. They are crap.

Purchased the x-type with high expectations. Boy was I dissappointed! The car that I bought gave me a "Gear Box Fault" to which there was no explanation in the manual. Took the car to be serviced and was given another x-type as a loaner. That was over a month and a half ago! Oh yeah, did I mention that the loaner car just gave me a "Gear Box Fault". This was not to mention that my car had already been serviced twice for the moonroof and once for poor weather stripping.

  • Dream car Nightmare Jaguar X type - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

My dream car has had multiple problems. Had to have a new driver door latch - could not open door from outside at all; trunk latch malfunctions consistently; gear box fault light comes on frequently and the service department cant seem to figure out if its a computer glitch or mechanical problem; engine light has also come on. I wouldnt recommend this car to anyone!!!!!
