This Year's Model Updates:

Ever expanding and improving its brood of stately vehicles, Mercedes gives the C-Class a complete overhaul for 2001. A choice of two new engines, increased safety features and sleeker sheet metal tempt those who seek to gain a foothold into the exalted realms of Mercedes ownership.

Pros:
  • Solid construction, free scheduled maintenance, S-Class Jr. styling.
Cons:
  • Tight squeeze for backseat occupants, pricey for its segment.

  • Computer replacement - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I had to replace the main computer board in their c320? Took my car in to carmax after the coolant light came on. First they said it was the fan and replaced it. I was told the tech broke off the sensor and now all I know is this simple repair has ballooned into a nightmare.

Multiple design flaws and even more build execution flaws: seats that go back and wont come up, groaning suspension, air vents to the windshield that do nothing but create condensation, poor quality paint, impossibly complex climate controls, even more impossibly complex key to seat setting control requirements................all exceeded by a service department that really doesnt seem to know what theyre doing, loaner cars with NO gas and rarely cleaned, blah blah blah. The sales rep (Calvin) was great; he is, unfortunately all too peerless. Im off to pick up a Lexus GS300; never should have strayed from the proven Japanese brand.

  • Very Disappointed - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

In the four years we have owned this vehicle reliability has been a major concern. Blinker bulbs have been replaced 4-5 times. The power seat became inoperative. Weve had Intermittent problems with sun roof and back window shade opening and closing properly. Power steering fluid leaked from the car. Air conditioning system failed to cool after 3.5 years, and the dealer originally could not find leak. Six months later, the same problem arose, the leak was found, and the repair cost $1800. Alternator recently failed while driving at highway speeds, the car stalled, almost causing a major traffic accident. Cost to repair $1000. The gas pedal is non-responsive when starting off from zero miles per hour.

  • Stable and reliable - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

This is my second Mercedes because my first one was totaled in an accident where someone traveling at over 65MPH hit me from behind. I walked out with 2 scratches, so I had to buy another Mercedes. Its been an extremely safe car, and it auto-corrects in slippery roads. Ive had the car for 7.5 years, and its been a very reliable, safe car to drive.

  • Addictive Lemon - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I look forward to the drive everytime I get behind the wheel and step on the gas, as it has power, handling, and style. What I hate is the reliability. I had more problems with this one car than with my 10 previous cars combined, including a 20 year old $300 Accord. I still love it but its easy to go bankrupt fixing this car. Problems: power steering pump broke, cam and crank sensors ($1k repair), dual zone climate not dual anymore, vent solenoid making noises, alternator replaced, numerous light bulb failures, other minor electrical gremlins that I stopped bothering with. Do not buy this car unless you have FULL warranty or money to fix it. Otherwise great drivers car.

  • Disappointing Car - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

This car is very fun to drive when it is working. We have almost 30 pages of service records in 2 1/2 years. We tried to get Mercedes to buy this car back, but no luck. Then the dealer offered us well below retail on a trade in. It has been in the shop 13 times--phone has never worked right, a/c broke twice, fuel gauge, windows, rear screen, etc. etc. Our dealer (Stead Walnut Creek) had treated us with contempt. We have been told by a Lemon Law attorney that they fight every single claim to trial, which is obviously worth the effort to a small minority of people. We are done with Mercedes forever!

  • The C240 is Best In Class - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
    By -

The MB C240 is by far the best car in its class. It combines the latest saftey features with leading edge styling, it raises the bar for the competition while paying homage the rich history of its marque. There is no other car in the $32-$38 price range that offers the luxury, safety, performance and status of the MB C.

  • Excellent car to buy - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

  • Not what you expect from Mercedes - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
    By -

I bought my car in Apr of 2001 thinking "yeah its alot of money for a car but its Mercedes!. Within a few months, I had to take the car back to the dealer because it was making clicking noise from windows and the remote key wouldnt work sometimes. I got it fixed. Then the trunk wouldnt open. I got it fixed. Now the lock (the piece that goes up and down) popped out completely and the lock wouldnt work again. Its just one thing after another. I dont think I will ever buy a Mercedes again. If I am spenging $37K on a small car like this, I want quality and durability since its definitly not the size of the car I am paying for.
