This Year's Model Updates:

Completely redesigned for 1998, the Intrepid is a sedan that has the graceful styling of a coupe, thanks to a continuation of Chrysler's cab-forward design. Dodge's trademark cross hair grille dominates the front end along with two large, sparkling headlights. And the new Intrepid is powered by your choice of two new V6 engines.

Pros:
  • Large interior, optional 3.2-liter V6 engine, good looks
Cons:
  • Facing tough competition from home and abroad

  • Disappointed - 1998 Dodge Intrepid

I just bought my 98 intrepid and the dealership checked it out and said it was in perfect condition. Within 2 weeks the alternator went out and now the body shop is telling me to prepare for a new tranny!!! I only paid 5,000 for the car and as of now it is costing me an additional 4,000. I was warned to never buy a dodge I just wished i had listened

  • 1998 Dodge Intrepid with 182,000 miles - 1998 Dodge Intrepid

I own a 1998 Dodge Intrepid with 182,000 miles and it still runs without a problem. I can say I got the good built 2.7 because Ive never experienced any problems with it since Ive had it for the past year. I keep up on the maintnence I get my motor cleaned often and change the plugs every once in a while. I love this car and am glad its been good to me. I dont know anyone that has an Intrepid with 182,000, miles.

  • Great car for gas mileage - 1998 Dodge Intrepid

Bought with 42,000 miles and racked up 160,000 Miles. I like the pep of the ES engine. Nice room inside (Im 6-6). The auto stick is fun and useful when driving bumper to bumper traffic. Just pop into 2nd gear until you clear the traffic. I originally bought to have a large car now I keep for the good mileage. On the highway Im at 30mpg. Im surprised that no other large car gets better mileage in 10 years! Sure it has its issues and Ive kept up with major maintenance like timing belt (a must at 100k miles). Some electric glitches and interior fading from the sun but its held up well. The clear coat is now starting to peel but not too bad. If I keep forever a paint job would be in order.

This car drives really good. Most of the miles are highway miles. I enjoy driving this car all the time.

  • Decent.... Not reliable - 1998 Dodge Intrepid
    By -

I had this car for 2 years. First let me say, while the car was running, I loved this car, but For the first 6 months the car seemed to be doing great, then after that, problem upon problem upon problem. I bought this car for $3000 and put probably another $3000-5000 in it for problems. In the end the head gasket went and I was done with this car, got a 2000 Mustang, love it! This car looks great, very comfortable, when it ran, it ran great, nice power, on the 3.2 engine at least. I love the looks of the car and the size, I love big cars, but I just had way too many problems with this thing.

  • Overall decent - 1998 Dodge Intrepid

Fast enough to get you a hefty speeding ticket but not fast enough to outrun a police cruiser! This car is quite good if you take care of it. Yes it doesnt run like a $50000 luxury model but what did you expect? Good value for a large car. Ask around your town for opinions about local dealers, Ive had good service where Ive bought it but bad experiences with the ability of other dealerships to perform maintenance when Im out of town,

  • I loved it, when I bought it - 1998 Dodge Intrepid

I really loved this car when I bought it, but at 61,000 miles, I believe it is going to be a service departments gold mine. Ive had the left front hub assembly replaced, it has been recalled 3 times, it has just started mis-firing when you start it up and when driving at highway speeds and the brakes are applied, the steering wheel starts shaking, I was told if the tie- rods have to be replaced, the engine has to be removed, Jeez..its time for it to go....

  • Cant Complain - 1998 Dodge Intrepid

I drove my Intrepid 165k miles before having to get rid of it (had 32k at purchase). With only routine maintenance a few medium repairs (Alternator and major brake work) coming in the last 50k miles. Good performance (especially highway), better than average interior, decent mileage for a car of its size and performance specs, and tons of trunk space. If you can find a 1998 and later model with decent mileage, buy it.

  • 95,000 Mile Suprise - 1998 Dodge Intrepid
    By -

I purchased this car new and for 3 years was exceptionally pleased. The car was corporate maintained with regular service intervals. The transmission went out at 88k, $1,400 owwee. At 95k the radiator, water pump, fittings were replaced. Then the head gasket to failed, $2,700. 30k miles later the timing belt failed again damaging the valves. $2,400. More problems:battery, coolant, struts, brakes, front end fittings ...I could go on. I keep hoping I will recoup my repair investment, but I never do. Im finished now. Tomorrow I pick up a used Navigator.

  • A few too many niggles for me - 1998 Dodge Intrepid
    By -

I have to say that my 98 white intrepid es is a beaut. Its too bad though that Ive had to take it to the dealership for repairs one too many times. Brakes are the most troublesome and Ive noticed that the poor plastic quality inside the car is coming off. Another fault though not from the car is the dealership serivce. It stinks! Ive tried three or four closest to my neighbourhood and they are all terrible. Times like this I wish I bought a lexus. Would I buy this car again? Maybe not, I think that for the money Id rather buy a used audi a8.
