Overview & Reviews
Few changes as first-generation Intrepid enters final year of production. A Sport Group including the 3.5-liter V6 engine is optional on base models, which also get an upgraded cassette stereo standard. Bolt-on wheel covers debut, and a new exterior color is introduced. Automatic transmissions get new software.
- Large interior, optional 3.5-liter V-6 engine, good looks
- Poor headlight performance, final year before redesign

My first car, lemon - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By carnube - January 12 - 5:07 pmI bought this car used in 2010. I dont remember the exact millage but I believe it was over 150XXX. The AC didnt work, the turn radius was horrible, and there was a cassette stuck in the cassette player. I used to ask my passengers to try to get out for fun. 7 months after I bought it, it started overheating, got stuck on the side of the road a couple times. Had to replace the radiator and it cost about $500. Month later, the transmission went and I decided to junk it.

A Blessing - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By carguru1986 - October 2 - 11:50 pmIs this really dodge/chrysler? I cant believe how comfortable it is. Cozy interior, and a war attack of an exterior. Good on gas, and doesnt stop rolling. Bought with 111k miles. Now @ 151ish, and still running with no check. Engine lights, no problems. This is what a car is suppose to do. If it ever dies ill rebuilt it and drive it again til it dies again, rinse and repeat.

1997 Intrepid - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By tybri93 - July 27 - 2:26 pmWe had this car for right up until about 160,000 miles. At that point it just started to go down hill, weird wiring problems seemed to plague the car. Just after 160,000 though. Before that, it was a great car. Ran great, and gave us years of faithful service. I wonder what happens with these cars at 160,000 or if it was just us. Performance was excellent even up into its last days, the engine still had plenty of pep. Very roomy, even on long trips going from Cali to Utah multiple times with four people in it, very comfortable.

4Door 1997 3.3L V6 - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By dafletcher3883 - June 13 - 1:43 amIt has about 235k miles and still runs strong, the only issues are that it needs a new water pump and the steering is going out. Other than that, the engine still has enough umph to outrun others when they challenge me, lol. I actually beat a Cobalt to the speed limit, *wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Great car though, really. If you find a low mile one get it.

My Intrepid Rocks - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By doctorsib - June 30 - 12:12 pmMy 1997 Dodge Intrepid was my first car...I bought it for $2,000 and Ive had it for about 4 years. It just hit 200k miles and is still going strong! This car is fantastic...its fast enough (at least mine is) to keep up with other newer, sportier cars, has great handling, is a tank (some idiot sideswiped me when I was going about 35 mph...his whole bumper came off, and I got a little dent in my door), and is even decent in the snow and in icy conditions! Ive had to invest very little into the upkeep, replacing less than $1,000 worth of parts in the entire time Ive had it, excluding the cost of tires and oil changes. Extraordinarily reliable...=)

Very fast and comfortable car to drive - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By Fast and Comfortable - February 10 - 3:19 pmI own the Intrepid LE 3.5L engine. I bought the car in 1998 to drive to Madison, Wi and Tennessee in the same week and it drove like a champ!! But, a few years later the air conditioner went out. I had to replace a floater in the gas tank and water pump. I had a couple of other items in the front end fixed and the regular maintenance. Now, the oil pressure light has came on which the car will just die out at a red light but starts back up again.A mechanic said that the engine is going out and that I might have a couple months left before it goes out completely. The check engine light comes on but it goes back out sometimes right away and maybe after a day or two. Could it be my crankshaft?

Not too bad - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By DarkSixAlpha - October 12 - 10:23 amBought this car off a little old lady who had already bought her a newer intrepid and was getting rid of her old one. Took it to her mechanic and let him explain everything he ever did for the vehicle. Major things already replaced such as Water pump, timing belt. Bought newer tires for it, had to eventually buy tie rod ends and control arms due to the fact the ball joints are pressed into the control arm. Replaced wires, plugs, an O2 Sensor, stereo with aftermarket stereo, speakers, tinted the windows, and everything is great. Just wish the car would have came with alloys instead of the steel wheel but all in all, it could be alot worse. 175,255 and still going strong!!

TROUBLE!!!! - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By Tam - September 17 - 3:28 pmThe intrepid was my first car and at first I loved it until a month later it started giving me problems. Every month I had to buy a new tire and my transmission went completely out like a few weeks ago and my battery died like five times or so for no reason. My water pump went out and overall the car stinks!

My Second One - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By HotTopMan - October 24 - 4:13 pmThis is my second ES AUTOSTICK, and like the first one I love it. Great car, no problems. Made to take the abuse. Just minor repairs, like any other car. People do not remember that you do have to replace parts they wear out eventually. I have 196,000 on it now and it is going strong. Still as powerful as a new car. One suggestion to people, this is not a good car for a first time drive, too much power, too large.

Shame on you M&M Dodge in Kalamazoo,MI - 1997 Dodge Intrepid
By Sara - October 3 - 5:01 pmI never though my 97 Intrepid would have turned out this bad. I replaced almost everything. I even had a friend make me a bolt for the engine because no one had a replacement. On my way to work my car just died. The only thing I havent replaced was the computer and I had done nothing to the wiring. Towed it to M&M Dodge in Kalamazoo, MI what I told them what the problem was but they didnt want to hear it. Woman are dumb! Joking. Well they figured out it was the computer, after they pulled off my new water pump, wanted $400 to put it back on. When my mom took the car back they told her it was unsafe, give them the title. The car was safe, they took the car.She fell for it. Shame on you M&M Dodge!
