I went from a Mustang Convertible v8 engine to a Toyota Matrix 4 cylinder. The adjustment was so much easier that I had imagined. I test drove many of the other wagons, including the Rav4, and I felt the handling of the Matrix was superior to the rest. The ride is smooth and quiet. The interior is roomy and comfortable. It can seat 5 easily. It is smooth riding in the back seat.

This is the only car I will ever buy. As long as Toyota keeps making them I will buy them.

  • Matrix - Just what I was looking for!!! - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I been looking for a new vehicle for a while. I needed room for kids, great gas mileage, a sporty drive, & reliability. The Matrix has it all. Ive only had the vehicle for 4 days, but Im really impressed! I do a lot of highway driving & so far Im managing 42.6 mpg with the 5-speed. All my friends think the car looks great & it has room to haul all my kids stuff to boot! Also, Im not worried about the reliability since its a Toyota. A excellent car so far, I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a small, sporty SUV.

Granted its only been three weeks, but I love this car. I drive a lot on city hills and like a zippy, sporty feel, and so was dubious that a small wagon could provide the fun drive I wanted. Initially I was torn between a Golf, Jetta Wagon, Mazda Protege, and (inconsistently) an Acura RSX, but the Matrixs combination of roomy interior, clever cargo usage, sporty feel and the larger speedy engine convinced me, especially for the price. Of course it doesnt have the torque at low RPMs that the RSX or another 2-seater-type sportscar would have - but I am thrilled with pretty much everything else and am happy with the compromise. A great car!

  • The Dragon Wagon really flies! - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I love my Matrix. It is the most reliable station wagon I have owned. I am a Visiting Nurse, so the car must go ANYWHERE and haul a lot of stuff. Plus, its my office. Works well, except no place to type on laptop. Lots of power, great handling, and no worries in bad weather. If you remember to turn off the overdrive, goes up a 17% grade at 60 mph with no strain. Pet peeve - the seat is not made for short people, the headrest shoves your head forward if you are 5 foot. Easily fixed with a back support seat insert. Also would be nice if the steering wheel didnt block the gauges in the low position. Quality made car with no mechanical issues. Sound system ROCKS, great for classical music !

A nice high profile for a smaller SUV type vehicle. I dont usually like larger cars and when I needed a new car, I was looking for a corolla type vehicle. This allows me much more cargo space without being a BIG car. Mileage is good at about 28.

I bought this car used with 55k miles on it 5 years ago, now with 107k. The only problems I ever had with it was the AC relay malfunctioning. With a quick jump on the internet reading about similar problems it was easily repaired with very little expense, the occasional wheel shaking and pulling corrected by an alignment. It gets great MPG, I average 29 city and 30-35 hwy. Decent power for a 1.8L. My wife of 411" has no difficulty driving or seeing out of. Lots of room, sporty look and feel with a classification code of a wagon(cheaper insurance). Very versatile, extremely reliable, good on long drives. A great all around vehicle. Perfect for first time drivers.

  • Excellent buy, fine build from Toyota - 2003 Toyota Matrix

Purchased at 90K, have put about 6k on it since, including several long drive up I-5. Fuel economy is wonderful, I average more like 30 on the street and 32-35 highway. Of course the interior is a little cheap, but its a Toyota, not a Lexus. The clutch is smooth and so is the transmission, no bearing failures here, despite an abusive previous owner. I have had an issue with the driver side window falling down into the channel: a piece of the window sealing rubber had been pinched inside the channel. Toyota replaced it no problems. The storage capacity is where its at; it is a Camry chassis with 3-4x the amount of storage space. Has been a very reliable and economical ride for myself

Matrix easily accessible by elderly, handles with outstanding control on curves as well as on slippery surfaces; excellent vision from drivers seat both of road and of dashboard for short people. Unique appearance creates a vehicle that is fun to drive and comfortable. Backseat acessible and comfortable for seniors and for toddlers in booster seats. Cargo compartment accomodates shopping trips for five.
