This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

  • What is Edmunds Thinking - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

You guys at Edmunds need to get together and reevalute this sexy, sleek car. What were you thinking? She is at least a 8. You really dont know what you are missing until you have driven her. BMWs and Mercedes should watch out. The Cats are Roaring.

  • The GOOD, the BAD,and the UGLY - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

The GOOD: Looks great, all-wheel drive works well, good acceleration. The BAD: 3.0 w/auto transmission no good--do not buy it! The tranny cannot handle the torque and horsepower of this engine with all-wheel drive. Mine blew at only 9,000 miles, many others had same experience. Should have been recalled but too many cars were affected, Ford was unwilling to spend the bucks. The UGLY: Customer service at dealership was appaling right from the get-go. You are buying Jaguars cheapest car, and they treat you as such. Service dept. horrible!!

  • Love the Car, hate the wheels - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I puchased this car to commute back and forth from work. Work is 100 miles away from my home. That means I am driving in it for at minimum 4 hours a day. It has to be comfortable and reliable. While I had a couple of issues which were promptly resolved by the dealer I have a major complaint with Jaguar. The 17" low profile rims that cam with the car should be recalled. I had replaced three of them before deciding to get aftermarked Jag 16" rims installed. Lost some performance but I can at least hit a pothole without having to buy another $500-$600 wheel

  • Will Always Have One If Possible - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I love this car! It handles great. The car saved me 2 times from accidents on the interstate with its quick handeling. Also, I can count on the Jag to get me work in the ice and snow, I never had 1 problem getting around the past 2 winters. Customer service from Jaguar is also excellant. Two things I would change about the car is the sliding armrest and the pop out head lamp washers, Jaguar should get rid of both.

  • Safe fun - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I wanted a safe car that was fun to drive. My 3.0 X-type is just that.

  • Joy to drive - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

The 2.5 is a pure joy to drive. I have the manual with a premium package. The only complaint is that the engine is a little bit on the weak side and that it comes without seat memory. Wonderful road stability

  • Its a good car; dont listen to haters - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

I have owned this 2.5 sport since late 2002 and have loved it. Ok, it isnt the fastest car on the planet bu the 5 speed manual makes driving the 2.5 liter a heck of a lot of fun. The ESC is a must-have and keeps this AWD car in control in all conditions including the icy conditions here in the carolinas suring winter. Lets be honest here....this car has had some issues but I must say that the local dealer has made service a real pleasure. They offer free loaner cars with all service (including the scheduled maintenance which includes oil changes). I am looking forward to purchasing the new 3.0 2005 sport model. Do not listen to the haters...this car is fantastic!

  • LEMON - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

Leased this vehicle hoping that Jaguar has improved the build quality with the assurance that I would be able to give the car back in 3 years if I was unsatisfied. Unfortunately... or Fortunately... mine was a lemon! Returning the Vehicle after only 6 months!!!

  • Transmission swap - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

Those of you who had a automatic transmission swap (out of warranty) had two options, buy a new tranny or a rebuilt unit. I chose the rebuilt unit ($2700 including labor). Afterward I looked into the issue and found the rebuilt have enhancements and internal fixes the brand-new ones lack. So rebuilt is BETTER than new.
