This Year's Model Updates:

Jaguar beefs up its presence in the luxury category with the X-Type, a brand-new model that brings the company's range to four. The X-Type is a fresh breed of cat for the manufacturer: it's Jaguar's first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, and it's priced to tap the entry-luxury segment.

Pros:
  • Reasonable pricing, sporty handling, currently the only Jaguar available with a manual tranny.
Cons:
  • Spartan interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear and exterior styling cues, price goes up with options faster than you can say "Ford Mondeo."

  • X is the way to go! - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Yes, its not an $80,000 luxury car but its still a Jaguar. Its fun to drive, handles well, looks great and I have no complaints.

  • Finally a Jag for the Snow belt - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

For years I have driven Jaguars and Have dreaded winter. Despite the low gear lock out I still had difficulties in winter. When I brought my last Jag in for routine service, my sales person, knowing where I live showed me a x type and asked me if I would like to try it out. When we came back I did not want to give back the keys.It has all the pleasures of the other models, but also has the handling for my climate in Northern New York, where snow can last in to mid may. I had some unusual things happen, a stress crack in the windscreen, and I needed a new program chip for my navigation system. All fixed and in a timely manor,Thank you Jaguar.

  • Very Pleased - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

Will keep this short & sweet. Build quality is great, performace is more than adequate. Its a fun car to drive with just enough mix of luxury and sportiness to make it interesting. Would highly recommend.

  • Electrical problems like any other Ford. - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

This has been a great vehicle however maintenance is costly. Expect several hundred dollars for the simplest of repairs. My particular annoyance deals with electrical. Why would someone tie in the moon roof, interior lights and blower into one module. $300 to trace the problem and $500 to replace module. I refuse to replace and let this issue remind me to never buy a Ford product again. The work around was to unplug the module but that means no interior lights or moon roof. Oddly enough the blower worked. $1300 for brakes, $700 for an oil pan leak.

  • A Great Road Car - 2002 Jaguar X-Type

The people that dont like this car must be people that have not drive this car more than around the block. It has great handling, acceleration and a soul. It is not refined like a Toyota Lexus, but it also doesnt look butt ugly like one either.

  • Jaguar vs Volvo - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

I have been a Volvo owner for over twenty years. I read about the X-type the day after Christmas. Stopped by the dealership and did a test drive. Bought the car on the spot. I love the way it hugs the road and negotiates mountain roads. Gas mileage is the same as I was getting on my newest Volvo. Folks at the dealership were great to me. They are very customer orientated. I like that.

  • X-Type Rates 5 out of 5 - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

For some reason, my review of the X-Type ("Edmunds Got a Lemon", 1/29/02)was listed as giving the car a 2 rating. Im not sure how that happened, but it mustve been a mistake, since I love the car. Hopefully, this follow-up review will clear things up. The X-Type deserves a 5 rating! (I noticed the same thing about some other reviews, such as "X-Type is an Excellent Car" and "Best in Class". Im sure those reviewers felt the car deserved better than a 2 rating, as well.)

  • JUNK - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

This is the biggest piece of junk i have ever bought. it started breaking down the 2nd day after i bought it. its has been in the shop 23 times. Warranty just ran out and we are getting rid of this car as quickly as possible. i have had problems with brakes, transmission, ignition, main computer, door panels. My wife and baby have been stranded 3 times because the car wouldnt start it would say security enabled and the only way to reset it is at the dealership. which is 100 miles from where we live. When i had problems with the brakes it went on for 3 months they had to get the engineers who designed the brakes and fly them into the dealership to finally fix them. Bottom line its junk

  • X 2.5 Sport - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

Ive put over 27k on my 2.5 X-type sport and have had few problems. Typical windshield jet seeping and trunk popper button are the only things Ive run across. Drove this through a huge snow storm in NY (from Boston to Detroit) and was blowing by SUVs. This car grips the road like none other and is a blast in the corners. 2.5 could use a little more kick, but w/ a 5 speed manual/Sport Pkg. its still a blast to drive. Great looks and awesome in the Michigan winters....wish I had opted for the heated seats though!

  • Student - 2002 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

My Jaguar x-type just hit 120,000 and still drives great! My dad purchased the car in 2005 and recently I purchased the car since I commute to school. The car drives well, and is extremely responsive. Its a very high performance car, and will perform to keep you safe. The interior is like riding in your living room. The car is very good in the snow. I have the FWD drive model, and while everyone else is skidding off the road, I am moving along with no problems. We are located in Ohio and I have driven on some nasty snow packed country roads with it, and it performed great. As a student who commutes, I needed a safe reliable car and Jaguar fits the bill.
