Overview & Reviews
Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.
- Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
- Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

Earlay 99 GLX - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Inver306 - December 18 - 10:00 amI purchased this car new right off the truck. I have had no problems with this car. I felt the suspension was a bit soft so I upgraded it with a Stage 3 Newspeed suspension, which included springs, struts and big anti-roll bars, a huge improvement. Latest mods include 17" wheels and a Newspeed chip. The car has developed some rattles and squeaks, but I understand that they all do. Car has 53k miles on it now and still looks and runs new. Ive love the VR6 since new and have taken several long trips with it; the car is a great compromise of space, comfort and performance. I think Ill keep it for a while longer.

52 MPG - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By macmandrew - December 9 - 2:00 amDriven over 130,000 miles, This has been a great car. Comfortable seats, Good heater, excellent A/C, 5 Speed Manual Trans (no problems). On the Dark Side: The interior trim is removing itself. Gas station attendant Conand off the fuel filler flap (cheap plastic?) Threw the 3 rear head rests in the trunk so I could see out the back window.

Style Over Substance - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By AK Jetta - November 26 - 12:36 pmWe really liked the style and the roomy interior and trunk. However, we had several problems including: driver window failure; body trim falling off; radio controls quit working; turn signal lever stopped working; throttle body had to be replaced and other mechanical issues. This all happened at various stages of our eight year ownership. The first few years went smoothly and the car now has 92,000 miles. I probably would not buy another Jetta, but this one made it through three cross-country trips, including one to Alaska.

Fun-but noisy - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Knickerbocker - November 16 - 2:00 amI live in a big city where small parking spots and tight turning radious are at a premium. The car never lacks for power and can do circles around all of the 8 cylinder taxis, as well as easily cruising at 80 MPH on the interstates. The short wheel base base makes the car very responsive, but it does cause you to rock forward and backward a little-but that is the same with any small car. One mechanical problem with the air sensor, but VW just the warranty and is paying even though I repared it two years ago. Negatives: serious wind noise and some interior parts (rear ashtry, rear cup holder, front-passenger door handle, wood grain) have jamed, cracked or just broke.

Reliable at first but .......... - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By DC101 - November 11 - 10:00 amGood car at first but always consumed lots of oil, keep an eye on dipstick ! Windows have always been an on/off problem but car has been reliable until 120,000 miles at which point electrical problems (misfiring) started to plague the car. Had it in several times for same problem. Still not resolved, dealership(s) can not find cause of problem so car now deemed unreliable (broke down 3 times in 1 month on major highways). VW Customer care is totally worthless. Will not reimburse me for out of pocket towing and car rental costs for VW parts gone bad.

I LIKE MY JETTA WLFBRG, BUT....... - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By knickfan - October 23 - 10:00 amFirst i think is agile, easy to park (i live in NY). For a compact car is very roomy and have a big trunk. Now as most of the owners i have a problem with the power windows(fr.driver side , and rear pass.side)they both broke down bet. nov. and dec. of 2002, to get it fix $350 each(ouch!)one of my headlights broke and a used one cost 180dollars. My point is that if you have a problem with this car youll pay more than any other car (in the same category of course). Im switching to the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Great Car!! Awful company!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By merlin101 - October 10 - 2:00 amMy car is a darling. Until the check engine light comes on - then its a mystery until Im in the middle of traffic and I can no longer accelerate. Service is awful! No one should have to pay $45.00 for a light bulb change or $30 for wiper refills, or wait two months for a catalytic converter when your car has failed NJ state inspection emissions and you CANT DRIVE IT!!! Volkswagen service needs an improvement plan.

1999 Volkswagen Jetta 4 dr GLS - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Carchick1718 - October 6 - 4:43 pmWhen I bought the jetta it had 107k on it. I had it for 3 months, put 111k on it. I was hit by a drunk driver and the car was totaled. It didnt handle the crash good at all. She didnt hit me at a high speed. But heres the story on my car. I dont think it was very reliable. The check engine light would always come on. I would have misfires all the time but I had my plugs switched. I had a coolant leak. Had to fix that. The cup holders broke. My glove compartment door broke. Everything falls apart. The car stinks in performance, although handled curves well. But my car was in the shop a lot... I would never buy one again. I was glad to get rid of it. Its a headache to have one. Hope this helped

Beware of the Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By kerryk_21 - August 6 - 10:00 amYou may look good driving a Jetta but you wont look so cute shelling out money every month for repairs. In less than two years I have replaced the cerpentine belt, the passenger window fell through the door, shocks and brakes, mass air flow filter, many small repairs, $40 oil changes and last but not least the catalytic converter. This single part costs around $1,000 and usually lasts the lifetime of most cars but not the jetta. The cup holder needs to be thrown out the window and I dont know what to do with the gunk that drips from the doors! Youve been warned!
