Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.
- Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
- Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

Dont buy it!!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By kpengler - September 9 - 2:00 amWell, I bought this car used and at first loved it - then - the windows wents down on both sides 2xs. the engine light comes once a year. the cup holder broke, the glove compartment broke, sunroof broke 2xs, plastic on the dash board has cracked, windshield cracked, the engine oil burns very quickly so have to check it every 1,000 miles. The volkswagon(hamilton,nj) dealership I go to is very good and have fixed the windows at no charge and check my oil for me at no charge and keep track of it for me. Yes, they know about the window problems and oil problems but there is no recall yet. And I also have that strange yellow goop everyone is talking about.

Oil burner - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Steve - August 11 - 9:30 amThis car is fun to drive but I would not recomend the automatic transmission, it slips and they say it is normal. DO NOT GET THE 2.0 Liter Engine... Burns OIL BADLY (1 qt every 900 miles) and they wont fix it, Cruise Control is broken from the day I bought it. I am 62" and do not fit well with the leg room, so I hope you are less than 6 tall. Great Car until something goes wrong. Also the heated mirriors never worked so I cant give an opinion about them.

First off the O2 sensor went out, then the fuel latch wont latch anymore, the cruise only works 1/3 of the time, yellow goo leaks out the bottom of the doors in summer, then finally the biggst of all problems the transmission failed at 58500 miles. BIGGEST mistake Ive ever made. Consider something else before you make the mistake I made.

By Mitch - July 10 - 7:56 amAfter 6 mnts of owning the car it was in the shop weekly.There was some kind of light that prevented me from taking my car out of park!what!?Then for no reason the back seat belt tightened up to the point that it would not move, it was so tight that it was ruining the leather in the car.Then I was told I needed new spark plugs and a spark plug wire set,it was $13 per spark plug and the wire set was $350!Total it was about $500 for a simple fix! Then my coil pack went bad which was $600 plus they told me that my coil pack ruined my plugs and wires again,(happened about a week after i already replaced the plugs and wires). I dumped that car at a dealership and will never own a German car again!

Run Away, Dont buy this car!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Things broke on this car that Ive never heard of breaking before! 2nd day engine was smoking, some type of lid flew off and was burning, alarms and door locks never worked right, locked at various random times, alarm sounded at various random times, I asked for this to be disconnected, was told cannot be done. Fuel pump went at 80,000, cup holders- we wont go there, center console lid broke, headlight on/off button stopped working, all dash lights stoppped working, front spoiler falls off frequently due to being too low, This was the worst car ever.

By ouch - June 14 - 10:00 amI would take a moment beore buying a Volkwagen Jetta. It looks great from the outside and it is even fun to drive for the first few miles, but then it all starts to fall apart. First, the little things started to go. The cupholder is a joke, rain comes through the window cracks like a bad umbrella (which they still cant fix), and I dont even want to talk about the ooze that comes out the side of the car. The second year was even worse. I replaced three sensors, a water pump, a window, a head gasket...... This car is now worth more than a Mercedes

I love my car , but woudnt buy it again - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By kimjo - June 8 - 10:00 amI love my car, but with 37k miles, its a lemon and VOA isnt standing behind their product. The automatic key broke & the only solution is to repalce the key for $100, the passenger window fell off the track & slide into the door. The dashboard lights have burnt out 2x, the glove box fell off the hinge and unfortunately the list goes on..... Ironically, none of these problems occurred until the past 4 months, which is when i bought the car outright from the lease. Dont even consider a test drive, just walk away.
