This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • I LOVE MY JETTA!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought my Jetta new in 1999 and have put over 100k on it. I was in an accident last week where a semi lost its drive shaft and I had to go over the top of it. There was a lot of damage underneath, but due to its great engineering, the car KEPT US SAFE. After getting fixed for about $2k, it rides as good as new. Im giving this car to my son when he turns 16 and have not been happy with any other cars Im looking at for myself. They should have designed the Touareg to be as comfortable as the Jetta. I will probably buy another Jetta!! Hint - after the warranty is up, find a great import mechanic and skip the dealership!!!

  • Loved this car!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this car when it was three years old, and it drove like new. Id been wanting a Jetta for some time and it was everything I hoped it would be. The car is very comfy and everything on the dash and console was within my reach. In the five years I had it, it only had a few engine troubles, and it never cost more than $200 to fix. I never had the $1000+ repair bills like with previous cars (Nissan, Plymouth, Dodge). It served me well for the five years and 120K miles on it. I would still like to have kept it for a few more years, but I just got rear-ended and sadly its totaled, so now Im getting a 2005 Jetta Wagon! I love these cars!

  • Good Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Bought the car new and have had very few problems. Replaced the glow plugs at 100,000, and fuel economy is not what it used to be ... but it still gets over 40 mpg. Great car on the highway or country driving. Feels like a sports car.

I have been very happy with my car, it has been very reliable and I have had not problems with it ever. I would recommend this car for someone who wants a 4 door sports car.

  • Awesome Car for My Son - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this Jetta two years ago from my local dealer, as a third car for my teenage boys to drive. Its a stick, with few options, but was in good condition. Weve had virtually no problems with it and its turned out to be a tough car, too. It provides superb basic transportation. Its fun for the boys to drive, but not too flashy either. We maintain this car and plan on keeping this Jetta for a long time.

  • I love my TDI - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Sorry it seems almost everyone else dislikes their Jetta. I have over 90K on my TDI and have never had a problem with my O2 sensor, transmission, electrical system, light bulbs, brakes, door ooze, or windows. MAF going bad at 85K and water pump wearing out at 90K are the only mechanical items that gave me heartburn. I empathize with the folks who have seasonal rattles in the interior as that is my only "major" peeve in a car that is fun/comfortable to drive and gets better than 50 MPG on the highway. Our other car is a new 2001.5 Passat which has over 30K of nearly trouble free miles. Our next car will likely be a Jetta TDI wagon or a Passat B6 TDI wagon.

Bought it new, changed the oil regularly, had trouble with windows and AM antenna (both fixed by dealer under warrantee), yellow goop cleaned at each oil change by dealer for a few years, just changed the battery and tires. I could not expect more from a first year of a new style.

  • I wouldnt trade my Jetta for the World - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

My Jetta is the most reliable car I have owned.

  • Great Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had two Jettas, a 97 and this 99. These cars are built for drivers. I have had no major problems with my 99. I had one window fall off the track, a mass air flow sensor (replaced via recall), and had to have the coolant tank resovoir replaced. All were covered under my extended warrenty. In total, Ive spent about $180 on repairs in the 5 years Ive owned it. It burns more oil than other cars Ive owned, about a half a quart every 3000 miles, but I drive hard and my old Jetta was the same. One complaint is that the front bumper is shaped like a hook and will latch on to a curb and not let go.
