This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • Steer clear of this one!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

After two year warrenty ended, I have poured dollar after dollar into this car. I only drive it about 11,000 miles per year. Over the past 6-9 months I have replaced the power steering rack ($1200), the catalytic converter ($900), all four brake pads and rotors ($700 because warning light never told me pads were low), both front windows have fallen off the tract (VW paid), replaced three different kinds of sensors ($800) etc. (Im running out of space...) Complete lemon. Others I know have had same problems.

A great car... The 2.0 liter engine could do with more horses though...the styling is great and handling is superb !!! I have not had any major complaints about the car (the cup holder did break in winter)No electrical problems...no engine problems. the stock tires were horrible (goodyear) replaced them at 36K miles (antenna was stolen once.. I have 45K miles on it now and I still love driving the car... wish I had gone for the vr6... waiting for the 2003 vr6

Pluses: Great seats, fun to drive,.... Minuses: The recalls, ie. O2 sensor issue. the green-ooze that drips out of door onto frame and then your pant-leg in hot weather, steering wheel in hot weather creaks.... Rear-Tail lights tend to go out often The minuses are starting to pile up.... This could be a great car, but right now the little things are driving me crazy....

  • Window Issues! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I loved my Jetta but cant wait to get rid of it now! I enjoyed almost three good years of driving before the first automatic (front, drivers side) window went out. It was not under warranty and cost $370 to replace. In the last six months, both rear passenger windows have also slipped off track and require new kits. I can handle one window, but three out of four is a serious problem! Buyer beware!

I boutgh this car a little over a year ago and so far, not only have the glove box, cup holders and electrical problems arose, I have also replaced the transmission twice in the last 20,000 miles! Also, the fuel line, and the negative battery cables! The car is horrible! Since Ive gotten it with only 50,000 miles on it, it has done nothing but drain my wallet! I also had to replace the cv axcel twice, and rust me, Im not rough on my vehicles! I only drive it on the highway for th most part, just to and from work. It is poorly engineered, and has nothing but one problem after the next! Its cute, and gets 37mpg highway and about 32- 34mpg in town, but other than looks and gas, I HATE IT!

Wed hoped to have the Jetta for many years -- it was fun to drive, got good mileage, and was well-designed. But three months after getting it, the electric system failed. Scrape the front bumper on the curb and it would come off. That happened four times. Sensors went out. Parts failed. All this despite regular service and care. Finally, something got loose around the catalytic converter. We said thats it. Just got a new Subaru Forester. I hope it lasts as long as wed HOPED the VW would. VW, you should be ashamed.

  • Oh So Bad - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Major things broken : ABS-$500+,Throttle body $350,A/C $800,Oxygen sensor $500, ALL fuel lines and pump $750. Finally after only 3 years and no accidents I was told the car is "irrepairable" Minor things: hubcaps replaced 3x cause they just fall off, window fell into door, car stuck in park and had to be towed Annoyances: Cloth seats will NEVER look clean cause felt like material keeps all lint for life. Gas milage is poor in my opinion for a sedan. Things inside the car are always breaking, like the glove box, cup holders, cloth on ceiling.

  • Great German Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Be Nicer!! Any car made in Mexico is gonna have some bugs. Ive had some minor issues, nothing my mechanic and I couldnt help. After 55k miles, and regular maintenence I couldnt be happier. I drive hard, and fast, I punish my engine and brakes. Theyve never let me down. * a note for those of you who are always in the shop... make sure that the mechanic you use is REALLY qualified to tackle what you throw at them. NEVER go to a mechanic that also services American cars too, German cars require more finesse and expert tuning. Dont trust anyone but a German Dealership to do your work on a German Car.

  • Buying this Jetta was a big mistake!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

It seamed like a nice car at first.. I bought it used with 34kmi heres what it cost me in the last 5kmi. Broken glove box hinge $300. MAP sensor problem $350. Ignition coil $690. I still have transmission shift problems, a water leak on the drivers door and a trunk light that doesnt work.

  • 99 Jetta GLS VR6 - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Fun to drive and looks hot, but the reliabilty is poor. Since it is the first year of the new model, the kinks were not worked out. Numerous problems with electronics. Yet, it is a sporty drive.
