This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru completely redesigns the Impreza and brings a high-performance turbocharged WRX variant into the fold to offer enthusiasts the opportunity to drive a powerful, all-wheel-drive sport sedan without breaking the bank. All Imprezas benefit from improvements in performance, refinement and safety. Along with the Impreza's trip upmarket come revised trim levels consisting of two sedans (WRX and 2.5 RS) and three wagons (WRX, Outback Sport and 2.5 TS Sport Wagon). The coupe body style has been dropped.

Pros:
  • A stout 227 horsepower in the WRX, all-wheel drive, a variety of sedans and wagons to choose from.
Cons:
  • No more coupe, extroverted styling may be too much for some.

  • Never Buying Subaru AGAIN - 2002 Subaru Impreza
    By -

For the first three years car was great. Then at 60,000 miles the head gasket went. For the next 9 months in and out the shop for over heating problems. Then Subaru gave me a new engine block. Now at 90,000 miles transmission problems; needs 1st 2nd third and reverse gears replaced. $2300. In a manual. I never driven it hard -- I wanted it to last, but as you can see its a piece of junk. I bought the car brand for their reputation. Once I get the car back I am selling it and buying a Toyota, Nissan or Mazda.

  • Best new car Ive ever owned - 2002 Subaru Impreza

After 10 months and 16K miles, Ive decided that this is the best car Ive ever purchased. So far there have been zero repairs necessary which Ive NEVER experienced with a new car. Its not a race car, but performance is great, handling is very competent and the ride quality is just right, firm but not harsh at all. It is noticably slower in very hot weather. Interior quality seems better than average for a small car, but nothing spectacular. It is also very quiet inside for a small car. Seats and steering wheel are excellent, ergonomics are good.

  • Fast, fun AND practical - 2002 Subaru Impreza

I love this car. Fast, handles well. Stupid SUV drivers think they can beat me off the line and I love leaving them in the dust. Theres plenty of storage (holds more than my girlfriends Landrover) and the back seats are acceptable too. Dont get that Mini-SUV, get a WRX...

  • Reliable - 2002 Subaru Impreza

I bought my wrx in July of 2004 while I was attending community college in Pennsylvania. I chose the wrx because of the power and the awd. I chose the wagon because it cut my insurance in half (I was a 19 year old male buying a turbo charged car). I have driven the car as a daily driver ever since. I later attended Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana which lead to some 500 mile trips back and forth to Pennsylvaina. I now have close to 140,000 miles on the car. Aside from tires and brakes, I have replaced the clutch at 900$ including labor and almost all of the ac components at 1400$ including labor. 7 years and 140,000 miles with ony 2300$ in repairs is pretty good in my book.

I’ve had my Suby for nearly three years now, and I love it more and more all the time. It’s been awesome for me -- a small, sporty woman. It’s a perfect size -- not too big, but large enough to handle multiple pairs of skis, snowboards, mountain bikes, and friends. I’ve had a couple problems -- front brakes had issues after 18k, but the dealership replaced the rotors under warranty free of charge. Clock also quit -- also replaced under warranty.

  • Car waiting to be modded... seriously - 2002 Subaru Impreza
    By -

This car is one of the easiest car to get the power out of. $2000 can make this a reliable 300hp monster www.turboxs.com. On the other hand, $5000 can net you a high 11s WRX. This car is meant to be driven hard and that is what rally car is intended to be. Please dont expect interior quality of VW. You will be disappointed. However, factory option carbon fiber trim kit will make interior look much much better. Tim

  • Not bad for the money - 2002 Subaru Impreza
    By -

Very nice sport sedan for the money...best in practicality and performance...for the money. With 40,000 miles on the car now...only had problems with driver side power widow (fixed) under warranty. Car still feels new and solid. Paid list for the car...no regrets... I still love driving it and feel good after driving it.

  • I will never buy another Subaru - 2002 Subaru Impreza
    By -

With 75,000 miles on it the head gasket had to be replaced. At 85,000 the power steering gear box. There is no trunk light. There is no lumbar support in the seats. My back is killing me. The visors did not have enough range to block the sun. It rattled constantly. The ride was extremely bumpy all the time. The engine noise was very loud. The stereo was terrible. Cruise control was not even an option. Stupid cup holder mounted on the dash board above the stereo.

  • Great till high mileage! - 2002 Subaru Impreza
    By -

Fun car to drive. The 2.5L is just enough to make it peppy and fun. Good in most conditions, not great in any. Problems start at 140,000 and continue there on in. My advice would be to buy if mileage is low and get rid of if near 140,000.
