This Year's Model Updates:

Two new trim levels join the Jetta lineup for 2006: the upscale 2.0T and the sporty GLI. Both feature a 200-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and both can be equipped with VW's trick DSG direct shift gearbox. All Jettas besides the Value Edition now feature standard alloy wheels, and torso-protecting rear-seat side airbags are newly optional.

  • Great Car, Great Deal! - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I just bought a 2006 Jetta GLI 6A with package #1 and 18" rims about three weeks ago and I love it! The price I paid was about $200 above invoice after all the dealer fees and I got 0% financing. Its a great car that I spent a lot of time researching before buying, and Im very happy with my purchase experience. Something to note is that the new 2007 version will have several minor features removed, such as interior aluminum detailing, presumably for costs savings - not a good sign for this line of car or VW.

This is my second VW and Im very impressed with the looks, performance, and features in my perffecta model Jetta. It was a great value at a total of $21,000 (including $4000 off because it was last years model) with Sirius, 6 disc cd changer, alloy wheels, euro style lights, spoiler and leather seats, plus the dealer added heated seats and a sunroof. It drives very smooth and handles well, and can very easily reach high speeds without realizing it. I drive it 100 miles for work every day, and drove it on vacation for 12 hours, with 3 people in it, and it is pretty comfortable to ride in.

The new Jetta in impressive with its list of luxury and safety features. However, I have just over 10,000 miles on it now and have had constant minor problems. The radio was replaced due to a recall, the speakers rattled and had to have a repair made (the dealer broke the outside mirror control stick when fixing the speakers), there is a "ticking" noise under the dash which was a heating/AC modulator gone bad, and it still sounds like a tank when you first start it. Maintenance is rather expensive due to special oil and filter. The dealer has been terrible with getting parts in and fixing problems. Im not sure if its a dealer problem or if VW parts are hard to find. Take a long test drive before you buy!

The car has a great feel on the road. This is my first diesel and German car for that matter and I am sold! So many little features in the interior, Im amazed at how much thought went into the little things. I still discover new features I never realized were there, years later. Ive also never needed to use any fuel additives for the winter and Ive never had an issue with Michigans cold months. At 50,000 miles, all four sets of brake pads still have more than 50% pad left and the pad wear appears even across all 4 wheels. This is a great car, you will never regret the purchase.

I commute 180 miles, round trip, each day to work and with fuel cost skyrocketing my GMC Yukon was simply costing too much to run. Some of my friends who own VW diesels suggested I take a look at them. Test drive, purchase, happiness! The fuel cost savings pays the car payment and the insurance, very amazing. Have never gotten less than 39 mpg and on several trips have gotten 48 mpg, average is 43 mpg. Local driving and AC use seem to be the things that lower the mileage but only by 2 or 3 mpg. The crash safety ratings were also a major plus. No maintenance issues yet at 35,000 miles.

  • Horrible experience - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I owned a 2001 Jetta that ran like a dream, never had any problems even though it was 6 years old when I bought it. I bought my 2006 in 2009 with 28k on it. Right around 50k miles the check engine light started coming on and no amount of money would fix it. I took it to 3 different mechanics but as soon as I fixed one thing another problem would arise. Do your research before you buy a VW! If you find a good one, they are great cars. Otherwise itll be a nightmare.

  • Not so bad - I dont get the other reviews - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

131K miles. The car had a couple of problems, but I dont understand the reviews. Yes, you have to change the timing belt every 80k or 95K miles. Same for my Camry. The difference is Ive spent $5500 less in gas to cover the same miles! (43 vs 28 mpg, $3.8 vs $4.1/g). Ive put a wheel bearing on it ($300, my bust for using a dealer) and four glow plugs ($440). Ill have to cam it in 50K miles or so. SO WHAT! Ill have saved $8500 at that point. Three sets of shocks, plugs and O2 sensors on the Camry - $800. No squeaks, firm, smooth, tons of leg room (68"). I cant believe people complain about $3K in maint for 200K miles with $5000 in their pocket.

  • Fun to drive costly to repair - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

This is a very fun car to drive with plenty of pep for a 1,9 diesel. Rear brakes go out first not the front as with other vehicles. The design and engineering is second to none for ergonomics and style but very poor quality of parts. The driverside window motor was replaced, the wiring harness is a common point of failure and the vent grills break easily. You will like the feel of this car but not the expense to own.

  • Pros have outweighed the cons - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive had my Jetta TDI for about 4 years now, coming on 5. Bought it with 162,000km on it. For the most part, this car has been bullet proof. Drives smooth, gas mileage is great. Interior hasnt malfunctioned or fallen apart. Its significantly more comfortable than the previous model. I owned a 2000 Jetta as well and just found the seats were WAY too firm. The seats are firm on this one, but not as. Its easy to drive for 10+ hours. The only gripe Ive had with this car is that for some reason, both side mirrors have somewhat corroded off. Passenger mirror went first, just kind of hung there. Then the driver side just kind of fell off out of no where. Have had to glue them back on.
