This Year's Model Updates:

Two new trim levels join the Jetta lineup for 2006: the upscale 2.0T and the sporty GLI. Both feature a 200-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and both can be equipped with VW's trick DSG direct shift gearbox. All Jettas besides the Value Edition now feature standard alloy wheels, and torso-protecting rear-seat side airbags are newly optional.

  • Great Car, but Wish I got the Turbo Model - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I purchased my Jetta 2.5 in May, and have been pleased so far. Now, with 6,500 miles on it, the gas mileage is up to 28 mpg on the highway at 75-80 mph. The interior is great quality, but Im a little worried about the lack of heated seats for the winter. Overall, its a very well-built, solid car. The engine has great torque, but isnt as quick to rev as Id like. Also, the 5-speed shifter isnt quite sporty enough. If I had it to do over, Id cough up the extra dough for the Jetta 2.0 turbo with the 6-speed transmission.

I have less than 1,000 miles on my Jetta TDI so far. I got 35 mpg on my first tank of gas. Everything seems to work.

  • Pretty good - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive only owned Hondas and one Subaru (a WRX) before this car, and I wanted something different and cheaper. I got a really low lease on this car. This car is fine. Its anonymous, comfortable-just real easy to live with. Its different than Japanese cars, though. It makes weird noises, and some of the controls seem counterintuitive. Ive had absolutely no reliability problems so far, which is unexpected.

  • Great car after 1 year - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

No problems to report after 1 year of ownership. Highly recommend this vehicle, particularly if you want to get combination of good fuel economy and performance.

  • Good Decision - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Id done a bit of research here at Edmunds.com and decided that a Jetta diesel was the economy car for me. Ive owned Infiniti Q45s and Mercedes E-Class cars in the past. I wanted something that would get me great milage with reliability. I bought the automatic with package 1 (my wife must have heated seats) Ive had the car for 4 weeks and have averaged 38 to 40 mpg on 4 tanks of fuel, doing combo highway/city driving. The car is fun to drive and really feels tight. I love the 6 speed auto transmission. It feels much quicker than it really is because of the torque. My only complaint is that its a bit noisy on certain road surfaces at speed. The fit is good with everything feeling tight.

  • Worst Vehicle Owned - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I drive about 40,000 miles per year, I thought I would get a lot of miles out of the TDI, I currently have 115,000 miles on it and I would never buy another VW Diesel. The maintenance costs are outrageous; timing belt, filters and special oil. I had to replace a head at 103,000 miles, cost $7,000, why, VW could not answer that. I suspect that they used the wrong oil on one of the changes. Make sure you read the maintenance manual about the oil, VW was the only one who serviced my engine, but who is to say they used the correct oil. Im sure the 2009s are similar. Replaced Belt and routine filters and maintenance @ 80,000 and that cost around $1500.

  • Dont Do It - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my Jetta in August. In November, I had an A/C issue, fixed w/warranty. In July I had a brake problem - needed brand new rear pads and rotors due to some horrible manufacturing issue. Not covered under warranty since I was past 12,000 mi. August 2007 (one year later) I find paint chipping from the rear passenger window frame. Very unhappy w/this purchase.

  • Overall Good Car - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

I jave an 06 Jetta 2.5 with PKG 2 and Nav. It has a peppy engine but gets so-so gas mileage. The auto transmission is not as smooth or refined as in my 02 Jetta. The Navigation works great, but the sound system is a step backward from the Monsoon system in past models. This car has a great ride, it is quiet and smooth. It has a very roomy trunk. The Vision V wheels are very good looking, much better than stock.

  • A Fun Car to Drive, - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Bought my TDI Brand new had to wait almost 4 months to get it. I have a manual transmission and the only problem I have had with the car is the clutch went out at 13,000 miles. Of course this is a wear item that is only covered for 12,000 miles. After doing some research found out that I was not the only one having this issue. Had to argue with the dealership but finally got them to replace it under warranty. Otherwise great car lots of fun to drive. Great MPG (41/49). The only other complaint is the air conditioning could be better. Does not do well unless car is going over 30 mph. I do get a lot of compliments on the car, almost as many as when were on the harley.
