Overview & Reviews
Two new trim levels join the Jetta lineup for 2006: the upscale 2.0T and the sporty GLI. Both feature a 200-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and both can be equipped with VW's trick DSG direct shift gearbox. All Jettas besides the Value Edition now feature standard alloy wheels, and torso-protecting rear-seat side airbags are newly optional.

Great car, saved my life - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By bludvigsen - February 21 - 12:35 pmThis car saved my life from being broadsided at 40 mph by a much heavier car, so the structural build quality and safety features (b-pillar, side curtain airbags, engine cut-off, etc.) are impressive. Great engine/drivetrain with enough torque to beat most cars off the line and pass on the highway while doing 80+ MPH without downshifting from 5th. Thats with the 5-cyl motor and 5-spd manual Interior very well designed with high quality materials, switches, seats, etc. Very comfortable, firm seats felt great after 10 hour trips. Reliability was great for the 69K miles I owned it. No problems, only sched. maint. & oil changes.

2006 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Stick - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By Bernard Gibbes - February 4 - 2:53 pmI traded in a 2003 Audi A4 quattro with sports / premium / stick for this Jetta GLI. Amazingly, I dont miss my A4 at all. Its only been a week and its like a distant memory. The new GLI is a huge improvement over the previous model (just like all mark V Jettas). The engine is outstanding - this cars ability to accelerate is extremely impressive, particularly with the manual box. This is the best short-shifter I have used on a vehicle under $40,000. The clutch is smooth and light and the steering wheel is best in the world (under $100,000 at least). I love the sport cloth seats. They are not cold in the winter or sticky in the summer). VW used a high quality fabric, which is very durable. this car has a great MP3 stereo head unit and bi-xenons headlights, too.

Great value in the $25K range - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By MikeG - January 25 - 4:50 pmJust bought the Jetta 2.0T with Option package 1. Great value all around for someone who wants a larger size compact with good to excellent performance, safety, and luxury features. The torque (acceleration) is great both from 0-60 and for passing on the freeway. The DSG transmission is seamless - you barely can tell when the gears shift - no turbo lag. I also appreciate the engine braking and overall quick throttle response. Interior features (dual climate controls, heated 12-way power leather seats, sunroof) are ergonomically excellent. Handling very good. Ride comfort good given handling (much better than Acura). More interior space than Audi A3, same engine, trani, chassis, $Ks less.

German Engineering--seriously? - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By steveocda - January 4 - 9:09 pmI have a 2006 TDI. I have replaced the dual mass flywheel because the original failed. That is a very expensive repair and negates a whole lot of good gas mileage savings. I also had to replace the cracked plastic valve cover. The rubber coating on the radio and radio buttons has peeled off and looks horrible. The mechanism on most of the air vents have broken off so they dont move easily. The fuel door lock sticks so the fuel door doesnt close easily. These kinds of problems simply shouldnt exist on a car at this price point. I havent seen that kind of poor quality in any other late model I have driven.

Avaoid if possible - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By ron_dg - December 3 - 4:00 pmPros: - superb fuel economy; beats by far any hybrid - pretty powerfull engine for a 1.9 liter - a lot of extras from dual power seats to leather - roomy inside despite apparences Cons: - feels like a cheap car after 1-2 years - plastiky... - tapistry falls apart in less than 1 year - twice ! - real bad mechanics ( 3 automatic transmissions changed in 4 years ) - at about 68 k miles, need to add oil even between oil changes. - engine start loosing power after 3 years; could not diagnostic the issue even after a computer upgrade; Bottom line, a fun car to drive while it works. When the mechanics and the technicians at the dealership knows you by name when you pull in, is bad...

All ready in shop, after first payment - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By teresabutler89 - November 18 - 2:23 amWe researched and researched this car and felt like we were making the best decision due to its great gas mileage. I am very disappointed in our car already. We have just made our first payment and the car just broke down on us. We had to call VW roadside assistance to have it towed right from our garage. We were supposed to be given rental car to drive. I was expected to drive one hour from our home without a car to get this rental car. I would wait before buying the 2006 Jetta TDI to see if any more bugs show up in these cars. Also do not buy one if you have to sign a waiver taking away your rights to take the dealer to court. Lemon laws dont last long. There are already buy backs.

Above Average - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By gillam - September 25 - 3:06 amThis car seems to have the same issues as other cars. I bought it new with a grand total of three miles on it. 60,000 miles later the airbag light is on and a coolant temperature sensor has failed. Dont know about the airbag light but the temperature sensor is about $20 from NAPA. The fuel economy is excellent, I average 47 mpg to and from work. I use the cruise control as much as possible and that seems to help. I am not a VW guy and to be honest the car is a little feminine for me but Im long over it. It does use weird oil and oil filters but so far havent had a problem at Jiffy Lubes across the country. I definatly recommend this car, I think its better then most others

Practical, Comfortable but not Spacious - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By Weekender - August 20 - 9:36 amWe bought this car for my wife. She uses it everyday and we use it on long trips. It is comfortable with an excellent, balanced ride. The rear seat is a little cramped but the boot is huge. It is good to drive albeit with excessive clutch play required at idling speeds. The transmission is short and crisp. The steering is precise. It inspires a somewhat erect driving position. The fuel economy we get is 24 mpg, it could be better if VW didnt make this strange choice of a 2.5 5-in-line engine which doesnt really have stellar performance.

2006 GLI 2.0T - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
By VW - July 1 - 8:10 amI have had this car for 6 months and love it. Interior is much improved from my 03 GTI VR6, the ergonomics are far superior. The turbo engine is strong no matter where you catch it in the RPM band and the six speed is excellent. Features such as the trip computer, auto up/down on all the windows, and ventilated glovebox are all small features that set this car apart from its competitors. This car represents excellent value. Oh did I mention I have logged 34.5 mpg on the highway?
