  Big Inside and Almost a Turbo - 2010 Subaru Outback

  Living in the Rockies at 9100 I was looking for a replacement for my 06 Outback XT. I wanted enough power to accelerate uphill at altitude and the supposed improved fuel economy and use of regular fuel were certainly an appeal. So I drove the 2.5i w/ CVT and found it to be almost as powerful as the turbo and when using the paddle shifters, quite fun to drive. Ive now owned it for a month and am mostly satisfied w/ a few exceptions. Build quality doesnt seem as good as previous Subys-seems like some rattles that shouldnt be there. The ride is lots more spongy and soft. Lack of temp gauge bad idea. Interior comfort is great-Im 63" and have lots of legroom-almost like a European car.

  Purchased a 2010 Outback recently after owning an RX 330 for the past 6 years. I must admit that both my wife and I felt a bit uneasy contemplating moving "down" from a luxury name plate but we couldnt be more pleased with our decision. We went with the less fuel efficient but more fun to drive 6 cyl. It combines performance, safety, comfort, and utility in a sensibly sized and priced package. Our first family vehicle was a 1985 subie that we loved but grew out of. After driving mini vans and various SUVs it is nice to know that you can go "home" and enjoy the experience. I recommend the 2010 Outback Highly!

  Good interior design, not that kind of cheap plastic style as in Toyota Camry! Plenty of space, nice touch on the fine details, such lights in the cargo area, hooks for shopping bags, surround sound effect, auto-adjustment of audio volume based on speed, instantaneous and average MPG, etc. Good car-like suspension. Very quiet ride on local roads and highways. Very good gas mileage, 29 MPG after a week of daily commuting, 50% on state highway and 50% on local roads. Acceleration a bit slow with a 4cyl, not bad for an AWD of this size and this MPG.

  I have had my car for about two weeks. With football season in full swing I have made a 600 mile round trip and a 300 mile round trip. EXCELLENT mileage and comfort. There is nothing bad about this vehicle. Kids love the reclining back seats. Harmon/Kardon radio is the best. Blue tooth feature...awesome. The hatchback takes a little harder slam to close all the way which is a little annoying but we can deal with it.

  Bought our Outback the same week our local dealership got them in. We love it! Our only complaint if you want to call it a complaint is the engine - it has enough power, but no extra. Its using all it has when merging onto the interstate, but its golden when cruising. Set it on 70 MPH, and the CVT gears down the engine to about 2000RPM and the "instant" MPG gague is showing 35+ MPG which is great for a vehicle this size. Everything else with this car is great - the exterior styling stands out, and the interior is comfortable and the styling is great - plenty of room for our family of three.

  This is a great snow car, however it developed the well documented front end shimmy almost immediately. Many of the convenience and entertainment features are quirky or poorly implemented (such as a Nav system that is horrendous and cant be read with Polarized sunglasses). Subaru finally admitted that their proposed fix to the shimmy problem would not really fix the problem, so we traded the vehicle in. Gas mileage was mid-20s in town, 30 and up on the highway. Dealership process was generally poor. A road force balance would fix the shimmy for 1000 miles or so, then it returned with a vengeance. Proposed permanent fix involved almost entire steering system rebuild.

  First off, I was dubious of the new transmission at first, but I cant believe the mileage Im getting with the CVT, its been between 29 and 32mpg so far. Ive found it to be very controllable as well, and the simulated gears look like they will work well in the Sierras this winter. The upgraded stereo sounds terrific, tons of room and ridiculously spacious in the reclining back seat, and many improvements over my previous Subaru, a Forester. No squeaks or rattles here.

  We love our new Outback-- best feature, averaging 28 mpg around town. Super comfortable and great looking. Warning, we had a strange "whomping" sound the first week when we hit 40 mph and would stop at 45 mpg, sounded almost like pressure in cabin as if one window was open slightly. When returned to dealer they were excellent and an engineer from Indiana flew down, knew just what it was, rear differential, and said a batch were defective with cement bits in them? At any rate, perfect now, but just to let others know if they hear a slight, strange sound to get it checked.

  Great Choice - 2010 Subaru Outback

  Third Subaru, but first Outback and so far its proving to be a very good car with plenty of space, comfortable highway cruiser and reasonably economic at ~24mpg combined. As with all the Subarus Ive had its well built with a great drivetrain, but the handling isnt up to what I expected, body roll is reasonable for having a high C of G but its the steering set-up that really lets it down. Turning into a gradual corner 40-50 mph and the steering feedback is not progressive and is somewhat jittery. Tire pressure is correct so assume steering rack and suspension set-up. Overall though weve made the right choice and you really do get a lot of car for the money.

  CVT Noise? - 2010 Subaru Outback

  Really like this car but our model has a noise that is present at low rpms and speed. It seems to disappear at higher speeds. The noise is coming from the front end engine compartment such as pulley system or CVT transmission. Similar to noise you hear from pistons/cylinders that rattle when not enough fuel octane. Dealer says its a normal noise for these models but I have not heard anyone on the site indicate a similar noise/problem. Dealer does agree that noise is louder than other models on the lot that they have tested. I personally think the noise is from the CVT transmission which is a chain drive system or combination of the smaller pulley system for this model.
