The concept of the car is perfect. Excellent fuel economy, lots of cargo and passenger room and an available manual transmission (a rarity nowadays). The execution is less than perfect. A new rattle or two every day, wallowing handling (although the smooth ride is a decent consolation) and serious quality and safety defects. If you own a manual transmission equipped Outback (or will own in the future), make sure you get the TSB performed to fix the stalling issue (a major safety concern).

  • Go for the 3.6R Limited! - 2010 Subaru Outback

Our 2005 Forester was in an accident so we test drove the new Subarus and were thoroughly impressed with the 2010 Outbacks. The 4 cyl didnt have enough power for us, so we went w/ the 3.6. Didnt like the fabric on the seats on the Premium models, and we needed bluetooth, side view mirror defrost & auto climate control, so we went with the Limited. Outstanding redesign, plenty of power, good fuel economy, extremely comfortable interior, very quiet (much improved w/o the frameless windows). One thing to look out for, these 3.6 engines can have a fairly bad hesitation when accelerating from low speeds. Many may not notice it, but I trust/hope there will be a TSB fix from Subaru.

Weve had our Outback for about 2 months and it has 3300 miles. It handles well, the 4 cylinder boxer engine is quiet and performs excellently in the city. It was capable on our road trip to Washington D.C. and got 33.8 mpg (vehicle computer said 33.2 but my hand calculations were 33.8 mpg). City driving is an outstanding 28 mpg, no need to spend $8K to 10K extra on a fancy hybrid. We looked at 10 cars while making our decision and found the Subaru the leader. Interior and exterior fit and finish are outstanding, the heated leather seats are very comfortable, even on our long trip. The 10-way driver power seat has an excellent lumbar feature. Road and wind noise are at a minimum.

  • Didnt know I liked Subaru until I drove - 2010 Subaru Outback

My wife and I own a Honda Pilot and we love it. When it was time to replace our Grand Prix with a small SUV we narrowed our list to CR-V, RAV4, and Forester. We wanted something with good MPG but a nice ride and good quality/reliability. We went to Subaru and found the Forester not worth while, but they suggested the Outback. It was GREAT! We dont like wagons, but this is a true SUV. It drove much better and quieter than the RAV4 and CR-V and with better fuel economy! Weve had it a month now and it is so much fun to drive. Excellent space and combined mpg is ~30 mpg! Overall, this is great so far. Hopefully the reliability remains good.

This is my second Subaru. Had a Legacy wagon previously and loved it. The new 3.6R outback I bought is higher but more powerful. Love the paddle shift and handling. Highly recommended. The version I purchased has identical power seats on both sides (no height problems here).

  • The Right Decision - 2010 Subaru Outback

Weve had our 3.6 Limited Outback for three weeks now and couldnt be happier. The ride is solid and quiet, and the suspension is compliant yet conveys sufficient road feel to keep the driver involved. The fit and finish of the interior are first rate: the buttons and dials are uncomplicated and intuitive, and the seats are well designed, comfortable and provide plenty of support. The 3.6 liter engine supplies ample power for a car this size, and it has a refinement I didnt expect. Subaru has built a well-thought-out car which has certainly resonated with us and raised the bar for this category.

  • We absolutely love it. - 2010 Subaru Outback

I have owned this car for a little less than a month. Our family has always trusted Honda but after a disagreement with their dealership we stormed out and went straight to Subaru who was 2nd on our list. So far driving this car has been excellent, so much better than I first anticipated. It had all of the features that we were to get from the CR-V and some more. At first I thought I would have some difficulties driving a longer car but not at all. It handles very nice and smooth, gets pretty good gas mileage (25 mpg driving in mostly hilly neighborhoods and occasional freeway). Bluetooth handsfree is a bonus that we did not expect!

  • Nothing To Write Home About - 2010 Subaru Outback

My first Subie, be aware of the shakes that can occur with this car. Do some digging before you buy. Good gas mileage for the size, which is nice. There is a negative, very poor acceleration, I have the four with a manual transmission. You will need to plan your moves in the highway, faster traffic will come up fast in the passing lane and flooring the car does nothing. Comfortable ride on the highway, good seats.

  • Not enough time for valid reliability - 2010 Subaru Outback

Wife and I were thinking 2010 Forester, but 2010 Outback, though more expensive, is a much more solid and quiet rig. Compared to 09 Outback, significant improvements in front passenger and rear passenger leg room (major factor for us). CVT tranny also a major plus due to significant fuel economy boost (with 40 miles on engine, we average 27.2 mpg on 15 mile drive home with some stop/go city driving and mostly highway driving). I always wonder about new design quirks with model year re-designs, but the car addressed our key objectives of legroom and fuel efficiency. Forester had a few squeaks in interior during test drive. This outback was rock solid over bumpy roads and railroad tracks.

  • Under Rated - Great Car - 2010 Subaru Outback

Have 1000 miles driven and Im loving this car. CVT is very smooth and the 2.5i performs surprisingly well. Handles real well and has a solid and smooth highway feel. Did a 350 mile trip recently and had no road fatigue. Ergonomics for the driver are well designed and the more familiar I get the happier I become with how they laid things out. Fit, finish and workmanship appear outstanding. The manual mode is a dream when driving mountain roads and the paddle shifters are wonderful. First Subaru for me- fell in love with a 2009 loaner and when I went to buy one I found the newly designed 2010 - with a bigger interior (the one drawback I felt the Outback had) So, it was an easy sell.
