  • No problems for us! - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Bought this van used for less than 20K with 20K miles (it was a Program vehicle). Now at 60K+ miles with absolutely no problems. My husband changes the oil regularly and it runs great. We have not experienced any of the wind noise nor transmission problems/oil leaks mentioned by others. But would like to see hideaway 3rd seat feature. VERY comfortable on road trips, though, and roominess is unbeatable. Would definitely buy another one.

  • 173,000 miles and counting! - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

I love this van. No major problems other than replacing a few water pumps and the starter once and the A/C; otherwise, just routine maintenance. I have had absolutely no reliability problems until I hit 170,000 miles. Now I have occasional electrical problems that wont allow the car to start about once a month. So far the mechanic cant find the problem, but were working on it. I want to see how far she goes! She may not be the flashiest or the most powerful minivan out there, but she has my admiration for her longevity and relatively problem-free service.

This was the very first Dodge I have owned. I thought the Van would be a good choice for my family, boy was I wrong. Nothing but Problems, the transmission out at 24k and then 90k. The air conditioner out at 55k and electrical problems at 45k. The valves made a bad clicking nosie since first week. The service dept says it would go away, never did. after out of warranty they watned to fix it for 3k. I told them where to go. Never,Never,Never again will I buy a dodge, dont you either.

  • Never again will I buy a Dodge - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

At 5 years and 60,174 miles the van broke down. After two weeks and $2200 to repair the cam shaft, valves, head gasket, etc. I drove the van three more weeks before it broke down again with the exact same problem. It appears now that there is something wrong behind the engine block and it will require a new motor. I thought vehicles are suppose to last more than sixty thousand miles and five years. I will never buy another product from Dodge/Chrysler product.

  • Another bad tranny... - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Stupid me I ignored the warnings about the history of bad transmissions in Crysler minivans. I figured surely they would have fixed this problem by the time I had bought my 98 Grand Caravan. Fat chance. Im currently looking to dump this vehicle with only 68K miles...shopping for a Honda. Never a Crysler product again.

Has not broken down yet. Do have a leaky rear seal and a leaky head gasket. Serpintine belt always needs replaced. Brakes are below average at best. There are worse cars out there, but if a friend asked me about it I wouldnt recommend it.

  • Its been an o.k. van - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

We have put almost 98,000 miles. No major problems, transmission makes some noise when shifting. The electronics are unreliable - Dealer had to recalibrate a/c twice when battery was replaced. I am on the 3rd battery. Brakes need replacing every 30k miles. Tires only last 30k and few options when replacing. Engine is very sluggish when ambient tempature is higher than 95F. Doors automatically lock at 15mph, this could be a safety concern if a quick exit is needed in an accident.

  • Good Quality - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Purchased Caravan used with 48,000 miles in 2003. Traded vehicled in 2008 with 135,000 miles for a Chrysler T&C Touring. Best vehicle we had for the long traveling for the past 5 years. All I had to do was change the oil, 2 brake changes, 4 new tires (1x) and routine maintenance. Good power, transported 4-6 people for soccer games, basketball, New York, New England area and Florida. It was the best workhorse. Hopefully, Fiat will revive Chrysler products for the future.

  • Bad Brakes - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

I am on my second set of rotors and calipers. The first set of rotors were all pitted at 20K miles. The first time the dealer covered the cost. The second time it cost me $400. Otherwise, the van has been OK. I have 50K miles now and wonder if I should get rid of it before a major problem, like the transmission going.

  • Belt problems - 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

5 year owner with 81,000 miles. Youre lucky to get 30k on the brakes. Ive had 4 serpentine and 3 ac belts replaced along with 3 belt tensioners ($220 job). Belt problems every 12 months. The battery goes about a year and a half. I worried about the amount of tranny problems others have had so I made sure I got the dealer to service it ($80)at every 30k and it seems fine. It has started to consume about a qt of oil every 4000 miles. The paint was wearing off in locations that the sliding door rubber stopper would hit when opened. Rust on the sliding door track from the door bearing. The headlight lens has a cloudy film on the outside.
