Never Again - 1999 Volvo S80
By Jim - August 21 - 6:56 amI purchased what I thought would be a "safe" car and a few nights ago the car basically told me to flee for my life; the message light read "Brake Failure - pull to stop and seek service". Since Ive owned it it has leaked fuel in puddles, lost its turn signals, airbag failure, headlight failure . . . everything that goes wrong with this car seems to threaten my safety. This is our 4th Volvo and weve witnessed the steady decline of what was once a safe, reliable car. Never again!

I Love My S80 - 1999 Volvo S80
By eyefixer - June 28 - 10:00 amIn 1999 I decided to trade my 1996 Lexus and make the change to the new S80. I am so glad I did. This has to be the best car I have ever owned. The dealer upgraded the cars computer software and I think they also did some sort of recall, but besides that it has been completely trouble free. The maintenance at the Volvo dealership has been extremely cheap to do (especially compared to the high maintenance on the Lexus). I would have to rate this car more dependable than my last Lexus too! The seats in this car are a dream. I can go on and on..... I love driving my S80 every chance I get. Its just such an enjoyable car to own.

Dont let this happen to you - 1999 Volvo S80
By LarryA - June 28 - 10:00 amA perfectly lovely car to drive when working, coupled with dismal reliability. Every major system has been replaced on this car, some repeatedly, (4 transmissions to date). Repair costs out of warranty exceeded the book value of the car (19K) causing the extended service contract company to deny claims. Ive owned it from new and its been a non-stop nightmare. Many reviews here from folks who bought the car used and drove it 3,000 miles. Just wait!

Head lights - 1999 Volvo S80

Im a volvo lover from the 70s, and I swear by volvos for their dependability etc. However this year of volvo has many bugs to be worked out. For example my headlights would not go out when I turned my car off. I called the dealer, and it took an expensive of well over $600 dollars to correct the problem. Thats not including having to buy a new light switch at a cost of $200.00. I had to replace my gear shift twice because it would break when ever I parked my car on an incline, and tried to shift from park to drive. I will always stick with volvo, but not that year. It seem as though the Volvo creators took a nap.

By Once Upon a Time - June 4 - 10:00 amPurchased a 240DL had the car for 17 years, 350,000 miles...purchased the S80 Turbo used and it has been a nightmare, went to the dealer to obtain the cars history and it printed off onto the floor..everything from replaced transmission, Huge electrical problems which constitutes most of the cars ability to function. My 240s outside to the day is still quality while this cars fenders are loose, rubber stripping outside is falling off...Once Upon a Time Volvo was doing it right, for themselves as well as the customers. The biggest problem has been that the company doesnt rep the product. Scary situation unless you have more than sense...

Nice Needs Improvement - 1999 Volvo S80
By Vics VOLVO - May 27 - 2:00 amThe car looks wonderful. Feels strong, and has lots of power. The suspencion is definatley not enough to handle the t6 power. Interio is wongerful and spacious, and looks great. interior needs better designed cup holders. A Suggested all wheel drive versin would be exelent.

Lemon Alert - 1999 Volvo S80
By jennifer - May 26 - 4:36 pmI bought this car right after my Son was born because I wanted a safe, spacious and comfortable car. 2 days later it wouldnt start and its been in and out of the shop over 10 times since. I have poured thousands and thousands of dollars into it and it continues to have more and more things wrong with it. I just last week had a new transmission put in and it has about 6 new things that need to be repaired. There is constantly an emission light/ check engine/service required light on and no one can ever seem to fix it for more than a few days. It has been one heartache after another. I would not recommend this car for anyone who wants to remain sane.

Bad Ergonomics - 1999 Volvo S80
By GaryOwen - May 21 - 10:00 amThe S80 dashboard layout & ergonomics are a nightmare! so many little identical or nearly identical knobs for different features. Inst panel lights fade in bright light. "DRLs" are really headlights on at full strength - too bright & burns out bulbs real fast. The turbo sucks - too much lag. Give me an honest V8 (or even a full powered six). The power steering is overly sensitive. The traction control is a joke & gets you stuck in the snow even with premium snow tires. The only plus is a crashworthy design. I doubt I will ever buy another Volvo. What a screw deal!!

beware of the S-80 - 1999 Volvo S80
By J Morgan - April 26 - 5:33 amI just traded in my S-80 on an Acura. I will not own another Volvo. The S-80 was wonderful when it ran but was the most unreliable car I have owned. In 36 months, I had over 20 problems over and above scheduled maintenance. Most seemed to be related to computer problems, and fuel pumps. The car would die at inopportune times. Sometimes it would restart - sometimes not. I lost faith in what should have been a premium automobile.
