This Year's Model Updates:

This long overdue redesign of the S90 counts several firsts to its credit: first with a transverse inline six, first with fully integrated GSM phone, first to carry an environmental specification (Europe only at introduction) and the S80 boasts the world's smallest manual transmission.

Pros:
  • Safety. Comfort. Performance of the S80 T6. Interesting styling.
Cons:
  • No wagon available - yet.

  • The Best! - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Having owned several luxury cars over the years, Ive had my chance to really test them. My S80 is a 1999 and has roughly 60,000 miles on it. Only problem was a side light that fell out. Dealer replaced with the new revised part and said it should never happen again. So far it hasnt. Other than regular maintenance (very reasonably priced w/dealer) no problems to report at all. Its a wonderful vehicle and so solid. The seats are the best Ive ever found. I used to own a Lexus LS400. That car was great too! Its a toss up between which of these I like better. The Volvo S80 T6 (twin turbo) will blow them all away though!

  • A stinker amongst the good ones, I guess - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Ive read and heard about all the great, long-lived Volvos. Mine will not be one. Since the very day I picked it up, nothing but troubles. Leaks, squeeks, electrical problems, and a lot of time spent in the shop, including a complete transmission replacement. Fortunately for me, this was purchased as a Certified Used Car ... so its all covered until I hit 100,000 miles. Well, I still pay 50 bucks everytime I visit the shop. Dealer has been fantastic through it all, though.

  • Beautiful But Unreliable - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Beautiful car, but its in the shop waaaayyyyy too much. Since owning it,Ive replaced the power steering, throttle, bushings (twice), CD player, fuel cap (twice - and Im still getting the message "fuel filler cap open/loose") both side lights (broken clamps), moonroof switch and other switches. I have an annoying squeak in my steering wheel as well as the drivers seat. I love the way the car drives, rides and looks, but for the $$$? My warranty is up and Ill be trading it in for something else - probably a Passat or Audi.

  • Cars got a bad rap - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Im completely confused about the bad rap this car has. Ive had mine for over 2 years, and havent had a single problem that wasnt covered under a TSB during the warranty period. The car rides well, handles well, and isnt afraid to jump when asked. It appears that there may be some good ones and some bad ones, and Im happy to have a good one. I only had one repair that seemed a bit out of the ordinary, the stereo seemed to have forgotten about the CD player, and it needed a software download. I convinced the dealership to charge me parts only, no labor. $25 repair.

  • My 1999 Volvo S80 T6 is just right!!! - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

This is now my fourth Volvo and by far my favorite. I did have one recall on the car and thats been it. This car has been a total joy to own. I currently have 68,000 miles on my S80 and still look forward to the ride every time I drive it. This is such a comfortable car to ride in. I do know that some people had some computer problems with this car. It is all corrected with Volvos latest FREE software upgrade. The upgrade which was just released takes care of every electrical issue with the S80. I would recommend the S80 T6 to anyone. This will probably be the best car youll ever own.

  • In Love With Our T6! - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

We couldnt be happier! Our T6 is black and it packed with great features. The luxury and ride is like nothing weve owned before. The reliabilty has been great! In almost 90,000 miles, only two minor repairs under warranty plus regular maintenance of course, and thats it! Maintenance costs have actually been quite low especially compared to our last car (Infiniti Q45). Luxury cars weve owned over the years are a Lexus SC400, Infiniti Q45, and a BMW 325i. The S80 T6 is better than anything weve owned. If you want a good luxury car with good reliability buy this car! Best choice for under $50,000.

  • Never again - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

I wish this didnt turn such a bad experience for me. Ever since I got the car, its been one problem to another. My mechanic was tired of seeing me. First it was the motor for the window, then timing belt, after that, the headlights and the engine lights, then the sensor, then the passengers mirror and the drivers mirror. I hate this car. I used to crave having a volvo. I learn my lesson. The worst of it all, its difficult to find used parts. Everything cost an arm and a leg. The money I spent on it went double for repairs. I will advised every one that I know not to buy this car. if I cannot enjoy something for at least a year, then whats the point?

  • Not all lemons are yellow - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Bought the car new 12/98. After three years and 57k, the car has been in the shop for repairs 39 times. New transmission, still have troubles. New brake booster and ABS sensing unit. Turn signal has not worked since 3 months, dealer cant find problem. Motor mounts have been replaced MANY times, still have trouble. Problems with locks, trim falling off, a/c. Volvo of North America no help and doesnt care that the flagship of the volvo line has the reputation of a yugo!
