This Year's Model Updates:

This long overdue redesign of the S90 counts several firsts to its credit: first with a transverse inline six, first with fully integrated GSM phone, first to carry an environmental specification (Europe only at introduction) and the S80 boasts the world's smallest manual transmission.

Pros:
  • Safety. Comfort. Performance of the S80 T6. Interesting styling.
Cons:
  • No wagon available - yet.

I love the look and feel of my Volvo S80 T6, unfortunantly the reliability is sub standard. Since the purchase of my car one year ago I have been in the shop at least 9 times within one year. When I asked the dealership why they told me that the 99 was the new platform for the S80 and I basically took part in the reasearch and development end of fixing that line. Unfortunantly I ended up paying with time and money for countless repairs and rentals.

  • Best Car in its Class! - 1999 Volvo S80

Our BMW was totalled and we had to find a new car fast. We researched everything! We picked up an S80 T6 and let me say this, we couldnt be any happier! We paid close to $50,000 with the taxes. This car has been such a joy. The car did have an initial problem with a sensor but the dealer upgraded the software in the car and from that point it has never had any type of service aside from regular maintenance. It now has 74,000 miles and runs like it did off the showroom floor. They do it for free! I will never go back to BMW after owning the S80. Drive a T6 to see how nice these things are. You will be so happy with this car.

The car is very comfortable, drives well. HAs had minor issues requiring dealer service on 12 occasions. This is a nusiance. Has also had recall work.

I have now owned my 1999 Volvo S80 for just over 3 years. It has been extremely reliable and a great car to own. The performance and reliability are outstanding. I shopped around for about a year looking for a luxury car. This is definately the best from the bunch. I would definately recommend the 1999 Volvo S80. I have absolutely no complaints at all! Drive one, youll love it!

Bought the S80 in the US, picked it up in Paris. Saved thousands of dollars, drove it all over France (over 90 mph on the highways!), and had it shipped back to the States for free. This model has been free of problems

  • Disappointing Fiasco - 1999 Volvo S80

Volvo should be embarrassed with how this vehicle has seriously tarnished thier reputation. From day one, we experienced multiple electrical problems, such A/C staying on after shutoff, molding falling off, idiot lights that indicated engine trouble, malfunctioning locks, doors, batteries, etc. Everytime car brought in to Volvo 128, service department claimed nothing was wrong. This car & most importantly the dealer were a complete fiasco that sheds Volvo in a light different from what they spent years trying to develop.

  • Car is fine, Service is a Killer - 1999 Volvo S80

The design of this car is fine, but the service in our area is terrible. We have incurred almost $10,000 in repair costs not including regular maintenance. Thank goodness for the extended warranty. Three of the lights, including one headlight have fallen out! We drove away from a regularly scheduled maintenance without oil! We cant wait to get rid of this car, which is unfortunate. We really like the car, but the cost to maintain is a nightmare. I feel sorry for the poor chap who buys one of these used. We will never buy a Volvo again.

  • Loved the Car, but it has not lasted - 1999 Volvo S80

All Volvo maintenance & service performed by Volvo. Taken for multiple service ref limp mode issue, hesitations, and brakes slipping driving from cold start. Oct2008 in limp mode then stopped dead after driven 40 miles. Towed to Volvo, Georgetown TX. Kept one week & said nothing wrong. Feb2009, after driven less than 2000 miles, took to Volvo Austin TX. S80 hesitated entering the service bay. Volvo wants $4000+ to repair right & left front spring seats, Hood shocks, Front brake pads, Front brake rotors, Four tie rods, Realignment, Lower right engine mount, Both lower control arms, Lower engine air guide, Transmission pan gasket, engine breather box, ETM dirty. How can all this be wrong now?

  • great when working - 1999 Volvo S80

had this car over three years and when it was good it was great, but had a consistent throttle problem that even the dealer couldnt figure out and also a engine sludge problem even though the oil was changed at 3k intervals, thought maybe this was a t6 problem but as i see the base model has repeat problems that are common with other volvos, these are obviously not the volvos of yesteryear.I would purchase another volvo, but definitely not a turbo of any kind

  • Not worth $43000 - 1999 Volvo S80
    By -

Leased 1999 T6. Its been a reliability problem since 3 miles after taking delivery. 13 un-scheduled service appoints - Check Engine light comes on regularly. Transmission Control Module and Evap Control replaced twice. Most parts not available and require ordering resulting in another visit to Volvo service. Brakes are a nightmare - long play on pedal where nothing happens, then instant grip. Volvo service says this is normal. Remote locking has failed twice. When the lease is up this car goes back to Volvo. Volvo offered $500 off residual to keep the car but residual is $5000 over Edmunds TMV. Volvo knows this car was a problem.
