  • I Walked Away from This Thing - Fast - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I’ve owned several Tacoma trucks, including my current 2010, which I love. I discovered the new 2016 during a dealer for service department. I wasn’t too interested in upgrading before, but I took a very quick test drive and thought I was sold. I liked the interior and exterior re-design. So I ordered a Limited and waited several months for it. But I began doing my homework and reading reviews, which raised a few flags. Regardless, the truck came in at the end of January and I was excited. I asked the dealer to let me take it on an extended test drive before I took delivery. I had it for over an hour on city and highway speeds. That test drive changed everything and confirmed many of the reviews. The engine was very under-powered. It worked too hard on the highway, the transmission shifting was awful, and the engine was very coarse and loud. The brakes pulsated, like the ABS was engaging, with normal light braking. And there was this strong, high-frequency buzz that transmitted through the steering wheel, pedals, and seats at highway speeds and certain acceleration points on side roads. I could even hear the buzzing vibration rattle the interior components. That was the killer for me. I thought perhaps these were isolated problems on that truck. So the dealership let me take another Limited out for a spin. Same problems on that one! The dealership’s explanation? “Sounds like they all do it, so it must be a normal. Plus, we’re selling them like hotcakes so it must not bother everyone.” Very well, but they bother me. I walked away from the deal and got my deposit back. I was very disappointed but glad I didn’t spend the $38K on that. My 2010’s engine is more refined and owns the highway with its power. No issues with shifting, excessive engine noise, or uncomfortable vibrations. I will hang on to my 2010 for another year or so and hope Toyota gets it right in a few years.

  • Loving my second Tacoma - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

I LOVE my truck! I received an excellent trade for my 2004 Tacoma xtracab (access cab today). The main reason I traded was for 4 doors(we wanted both our vehicles to accommodate the kids). I got the SR5 double cab V6 with the tow package. The seating position is almost identical to my 2004 Tacoma (which I like), and the seats are much more comfortable. Very quiet smooth ride with excellent steering and handling. Lots of people have complained about transmission issues and rough shifts and hunting and slow shifts from reverse to drive. I have not any of these issues. For me, I find that the truck is plenty fast and responsive, but I do have to give it lots of throttle compared to my last truck and my wifes 2014 Highlander. I have no complaints about the frequency or smoothness of transmission shifts. Highways speed limit here is 65, and cruising with the cruise control engaged as high as 70-75MPH I get no more "gear hunting" than any other V6 I have driven, but it may be different at higher speeds. That includes going up hill as well. Maybe Im just lucky, but I have not had the transmission concerns that others have posted- its possible the Atkinson Cycle engine means you have to give more gas to go (you can really feel the power come on strong ~4K RPM), but it still has plenty of pep- and the official 0-60 time is good for me. I have been getting between 19-20 MPG mixed driving- so a bit less then the sticker, but much improved from my 2004. For info Im 62", and I have plenty of headroom. I also had good headroom in a model I sat in with a sunroof. I think my only complaint Is the scout GPS phone NAV app is not great (good directions but no close-up map view to help interpret the directions). My wifes car has the Toyota Entune sweet with integrated NAV- its awesome- so if you have the cash and GPS is an important feature for you dont rely on the Scout App. If you use your iPhone map app the directions will play over the speaker, so thats nice. Bluetooth pairing and touchscreen sensitivity/response are excellent (better than the Highlander). I have 2 forward facing car seats in the back- both fit fine with plenty of room for me and a passenger with both kids in the back.

  • Traded 2013 Ford XLT loaded and GLAD I did! - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

This is a great city truck as I call it. I am 63" tall and the only thing to get use to is getting in and out, the steering wheel needs to have more adjustments or the seat. I have gotten use to it and no longer an issue. If you are tall like myself stay away from the power moon roof it takes away your head room. I have 1500 miles on it now and love it more than any truck I have owned ( about 10,the last 3 being new!) Have not had any problems at all. Great city Truck!

  • Lousy engine/transmition - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Engine feels under power and the transmition is the worse I ever driven. Hard shifting from park to reverse and reverse to drive.

  • Worst purchase - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I had own a 2005 tacoma and drove it for 9 years with onlh one issue the air conditioner stop working. Sld the truck and had purchase a jeep but aftrr 3 years i decided to purchase the ne 2016 tacoma trd sport. It was the worst decision i have made in purchasing a new truck. The transmission is crap for it canot decide what gear to run in and the truck has a surge when you are trying to park or pill into a garage. I have had the truckmin the shop twice and went today and talk to a sevice adviser and was told that there was nothing they could do for this is the way the truck will perform and they were done. The truck is omld six months old with 6k miles. I am going tomorrow and trade it in for a Dogde Ram. Hopefully Toyota will get there act together for if people stop buying there products for they are no longer in my book as the best vechicle on the road.

  • truck is fine transmission if junk! - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I was so happy to get my new truck and i love everything about the truck except the transmission. I literally cannot go 45mph. When i hit that speed the truck shifts into a gear that bogs the engine down to 1000rpm and then it downshifts when i try to keep the truck at 45mph so it jumps me past that speed. I cant keep a steady speed unless Im on the highway in the top gear. I had the TSB done to fix the hesitation going from P to D and it worked. I had the transmission fluid checked. I did everything that corporate toyota told me to do and it still bogs down driving down the street and continually shifts. The fix is already in the truck but they wont perform it. If you put the truck in ECT PWR mode then it runs great. If they take that program and make it the startup program then it would be fine. For now Im going to have to trade it in and get something else. It sucks because i like toyota or at least i used to.

  • Great Truck - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Bought a 2016 Limited in super white with all the options. Truck handles great, rides smooth and is incredibly quiet. Shifting is smooth and predictable. Acceleration is fine. Easy on the pedal; better mileage. Stomp the gas and the truck moves, much quicker than I anticipated. The interior is very comfortable (Im 62") looks classy. The instrument panel is easy to read and has more features than I will ever use. Very happy with the purchase, and the wife likes it also!

  • Big improvement from the 2010 model - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I traded in my 2010 Tacoma for the 2016 model year mainly for the improved gas mileage. The 2010 was 14 - 15 around town and 21 on the highway. Im seeing 19.5 around town ang got 26.7 for a 2 hour highway trip at 65 mph. The 2016 is quieter, smoother and better handling. BTW I got 20 K for a trade in on my 2010 that I paid 26900 for so Im expecting this 2016 to also hold its value extremely well.

  • This really is the best Tacoma yet - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Wow, there are a lot of bad reviews on here (more than I expected), but I can tell you Im more than happy with my new truck. This is my third Tacoma (2002 TRD V6, 2009 TRD Off-Road) and while both of those trucks were phenomenal in terms of toughness and reliability, this truck has all of that and much more refinement. It rides so much better than my previous trucks and is quieter (unless youre using cruise control at 70+ mph on the highway - Ill get to that later). The brakes are much improved over my 2009 (not spongy) and it actually has some modern technology in it. The interior controls are laid out in a simple and functional way as all Toyotas are. This truck feels so solid and well built. Look underneath the truck and youll see what I mean. This truck just looks so bad-ass too. The chrome mesh grill, the great looking 16" rims on the TRD off-road, no mud flaps (truck looks so much higher w/out them), the long hood, the lines on the side, and the stamped tailgate. I absolutely love the way this truck looks. Now to the bad...I do have to agree with some of the reviews on here. The engine gets very noisy on the highway at speeds over 60 mph especially when in cruise control and the truck meets an incline (any steepness). The transmission down shifts, causing the engine to rev and it is loud. Fortunately for me, I dont drive a whole lot on the highway and Id never take my family on vacation in this truck, so for me, this is not a deal breaker. I also agree that the gas mileage is not better than the prior Tacoma V6s. Im averaging about 17 mpgs in mostly city driving. There is no car (or truck) that is absolutely perfect, but for me, this truck is exactly what I wanted and expected. I have zero buyers remorse and I guarantee you when I eventually get rid of it, Ill have no remorse collecting way more money than if I had bought another vehicle. The resale value on Tacomas is unbelievable. And theres a reason for that...
