This Year's Model Updates:

The 1998 Toyota Corolla is completely redesigned this year with a new engine, new sheet metal and a new standard for safety in compact cars: optional front passenger side-impact airbags.

Pros:
  • All-new with a great engine, new body, and first-in-segment side-impact airbags, the 1998 Toyota Corolla is the best thing to hit the compact car market since the original VW Beetle.
Cons:
  • Shape is a bit dull.

  • Pocket Saver ( saved my truck ) - 1998 Toyota Corolla

Drove this car last year 1600 miles per week for about 4 months. We were moving and this car saved us hundreds of dollars in fuel. Did very little maintenance during that time period ( I was living in it ) We still travel a good bit. Car now has 110,000 miles all we have done is oil changes, plugs, wires, belt. Now needs struts. Usual wear and tear items. Hard to let go just need a bigger more comfortable travel vehicle.

This is the most reliable automobile I have ever owned. We have two 1998 Corollas one is an LE and the other a CE. Both were purchased used at 30,000. Both now have over 100,000. This is truly an economy car needing normal maintenance and only one repair ever: the throttle position sensor on both cars one time.

I have had my car for almost five (5) years. I have been in three (3) car accidents with it. It was nothing but the power of GOD when I was in the three (3) different car accidents, my child was not in the car with me at no times. On January 2, 2003, I was coming from work and slid on Black Ice on the Garden State Parkway. Once again I was fortunate and Blessed my car finally came to a complete stop right before I hit the wall. A driver speeding in such hazardous condition going nowhere probably slid on the same Black Ice and ran right in the back of my car and smashed it. Sincerely, On My Bending Knees

What a fabulous small car! I have enjoyed driving this car for 11 years now, and its still going strong. The fuel efficiency is outstanding. I have and never done anything other than routine maintenance on this car (which I purchased new), and it now has 195,000 miles on it. I recently test drove some new cars, and my 98 Toyota actually drove better than some of them!

  • Nothing ever goes wrong with this car. - 1998 Toyota Corolla

Seriously, I bought it new 12 years ago, it has about 90,000 miles on it, its gotten all its regular maintenance, and nothing serious has ever gone wrong with it. The only thing that doesnt work is that the 2nd radio button sticks. The engines a bit underpowered, but you will not find a more reliable car. Also, the Toyota vehicles that had issues with accelerators were all 1990 or later, so 1980 is a good year for used models. Its comfy. I have a bad lower back, and the lumbar support is fantastic! It actually makes my back feel better, which is great for long drives. Unbelievably good gas mileage. I am very happy with this car and would recommend it to anyone.

This car has been an incredibly reliable, low maintenance vehicle that has performed as well as I expect a Toyota to perform. Other than the routine maintenance, only had one problem (throttle control valve) that was replaced by the dealership. This is a great car for those whose egos dont need to be soothed by driving the biggest, fastest, etc. vehicle out there.

The car has given good performance and few repairs. Normal upkeep has served me well.

Has been a very good running and driving car. Maintenance has been nil. A little more power in engine would help it in climbing mountains. However, very seldom driven in mountains.

Ive LOVED my Corolla!! Im the kinda car owner that wants to put my key in and have the car go and not need to know anymore than that. I wasnt fond of the dealer in Seattle re: maintenance (I was treated poorly)but luckily havent needed to go often! Im thinking of trading it in sadly but only to get more space of a minivan. I bought it as a childless couple and the carseat and long commute on the ferry seems to be shrinking the interior. If I had gone for a CE or LE I would have had that fold down seat to the trunk which would have fixed everything but...I dont :)

We purchased this car new in 98 and besides regular maint. and a $1 muffler repair (no joking, a bolt came loose) this car has been problem free. Not bad for over a car with more than 100K miles. The ride is comfortable and handling in the winter is much better than I expected. I also like the fact there are *no* rattles or squeeks. I dont think you can do better for a inexpensive small car.
