This Year's Model Updates:

The Avalon has been redesigned for 2005 and now offers a more powerful V6 and even more room than before.

Pros:
  • Carefully constructed cabin befitting a Lexus, powerful and smooth V6 engine, superb ride quality, huge rear seat.
Cons:
  • Not as much fun to drive as a Chrysler 300, stability control can only be had on top-rung models.

  • Love It! - 2005 Toyota Avalon

I went from a Ford Explorer to the 2005 Avalon Touring Edition. I love it! Im 66" and even I would be comfortable in the back seat! I love how the Touring Edition hugs the road. By rotating my tires every 5,000 miles, I was able to get 60,000 miles off the original set. 2 years and 1 month of ownership the battery died. I am disappointed somewhat in the quality of the interior. The finish is wearing off on inside the drivers door handle and a few other small issues but overall the car is great and gets great gas mileage.

I have experienced as high as 32.4 MPG on the highway with my 2005 XLS Avalon and also have LOADS of power at the same time. Smooth, quiet, comfortable this car has it all. The JBL stereo system is great.

  • Intermittent Starting Problem - 2005 Toyota Avalon

Purchased vehicle new and after approx. 2 years noticed problem in starting engine(no pattern to problem). Dealer claims foot is not being held firmly on brake pedal when starting. Why did it take 2 years for this to become a problem. Dealer has kept vehicle on 2 occasions for several days and says it never failed to start. They said they have never seen this problem before & dont know where to look for the problem. Toyota said basically the same thing. When it fails, and without changing pressure on brake pedal, it usually starts after 4-5 attempts. Strange Toyota "engineers" cant provide a fix for this problem. This is my last Toyota. Small oil leak at 1000 miles.

The new 2005 handles like a dream. Is quiet, maneuvers like a cheetah. I have yet to step on the gas full as of now because the 280 HP is way more than it needs. The temperature should be displayed at all times but it is not. I think the new engine is a little more noisy than my 98 Avalon but it is still very quiet in the passenger compartment. The sound system is fantastic. I have only 350 + miles on the car to date and the expected milage is as good if not better than advertised.

  • Great Car - 2005 Toyota Avalon

Fast, roomy, great gas mileage, excellent look. This car has been great to drive and gets loads of compliments. I compared to the ES330 and the G35 and really felt the Avalon was the best in class. No other car has the mix of great looks, fuel ecomony and interior size like this car. I love driving it as it performance like a sports car but rides like a luxury car.

I almost passed this car up in my search for a replacement for my 98 Camry with 150K miles on it. I just decided to drive one before I went on to the Mercedes dealership to buy the E- Class that I drove the day before. A close look told me that this was not the boxy, bland Avalon of old. What an amazingly exciting car Toyota has assembled here! Power to spare, and it is silky smooth. Interior design is beautiful and very comfortable. Best seat design for a big person that I have seen. The dual zone a/c is a little confusing at first, but I figured it out with practice. I would like to see a nice looking door guard worked in, but otherwise, this car is outstanding in every way. Big and roomy!

  • Questionable - 2005 Toyota Avalon

Car has had no major problems. Time is showing quality issues. Paint chips very easy. Interior headliner needs replaced. Radio door cover opens 40% of the time. Control panel door for nav. falling off! With just over 30,000 miles not the quality I would expect from Toyota! I will return to MB!

Positioning of windshield wiper switch mechanism is too low down on the steering column. At times I inadvertantly hit it with my knuckle while shifting the gear knob causing the wipers to activate.

Ive had this car 26 months now and have had no mechanical problems. Replaced the tires and brakes and regular maintenance. Very fun to drive for such a large car, Im still in my 30s and want something that carries my family comfortably and still has some power under the hood, and my Avalon has it all. Paint seems to be thin though, and has small rust spots in places, even though I wax 2x a year. Only big problem is that when I went to upgrade into a newer model, I lost all of my value due to Toyotas recent problems, and am now stuck upside down. The only good thing to that is at least my car is last me a good long time. Ill be bored of it long before it wears out, I believe.
