This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota has tinkered with the options packages, but otherwise left the Avalon alone. A new luxury package for the XL includes power leather-trimmed seats, 15-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry and a JBL audio system. There's also a Sport Luxury package that adds 16-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler in addition to the items in the luxury package.

Pros:
  • Lexus-like quality, smooth V6 engine, huge rear seat.
Cons:
  • High price tag, funky dash design, toothy chrome grille.

  • Almost Perfect - 2002 Toyota Avalon

I researched new cars for 4 months before deciding on the Toyota Avalon XLS. Quality, dependability, and interior space were what I wanted. The Avalon XLS is almost perfect. The ride is comfortable and solid. The back seat is large and very comortable for passengers, especially elderly people, making it easy to get in and out. I love driving this car!

Except for the cheap "general-make" tyres the car came with this one is truly dependable.

This car is nice. We bought the XLS model 2001, and very happy w/ it. People keep on comparing this car to the Lexus model, however, I think for the price it maybe a better buy.

Our Avalon has 27000 miles. Its a great car. Plenty of room, great back seat, and a huge trunk. Plenty of power, and good on gas. Rides very smooth. Only had 2 problems. Breaks pulsating. Which is common for Avalons. And wood grain lifting from summer heat. Wish the outside looked as good as the inside. You get a lot of car for the money. But dont be fooled. It is not a Lexus. It doesnt ride like one or handle like one. Test drive the Volvos and Audis then compare the Avalon. Youll see the Avalon is a much better.

  • Nice cruiser roomy - noisy shocks - 2002 Toyota Avalon

Have put about 30k on mine since buying new. Had to replace brakes. It is based on the same platform as the 97-2002 Camry. I owned a 1998 Camry which had shocks that made knocking noises over bumpy pavement. This Avalon, while very serene, also does the same thing. Maybe the bushings? Its annoying considering the rest of the car is pretty tight. Rear door squeaks when opening. Otherwise, it has been a reliable, relaxing vehicle.

  • Super Quiet and Comfortable - 2002 Toyota Avalon

This car is a pleasure to drive. Its so quiet at 65 mph, I can still hear soft musical passages on the well performing sound system. The quick acceleration allows me to get around the slow traffic even in short passing zones. Handling around curves is not like a sports car, but very good for a car this size. The only service required (other than scheduled) is repairing a small paint problem on the front bumper. The last 2 other new cars purchased required numerous dealer trips to get the kinks out.

i purchased my avalon on a feb 2001, recently owning a tercel. this car is plain ugly such as the poor imatation of a 95 s class tail lights, the grill which is too big with such bad looking fake chrome and the 15 inch rims with have no style, and also the boxy styling on the top it looks like a tall box on wheels far away. on the other hand avalons v6 has great acceration for a boat but steering a little off which is to light. it has a extremly quiet cabin, and offers gernous leg room in the back. the sound system is GREAT in this car, this 6 inch wroofer sounds like a 15 inch when turned loud. what should i call this car....hmmm its just like a old man lexus es300.

  • Best car Ive driven, ever! - 2002 Toyota Avalon
    By -

I bought this car a couple of months ago with nearly 150k miles on it, & I love driving it. My mechanic was impressed with its condition; he told me it will go another 100k! I have owned cars with 150k miles, always as a 2nd owner, & I always found them fairly uncomfortable. Ive owned a 76 Honda Civic, an 86 Toyota Tercel (which still runs), an 85 GM Oldsmobile, & a 94 Ford Taurus. The feel of the Avalon is not sporty, but it is wonderfully smooth and powerful. Suddenly I want to go for long drives again, like when I first began driving at 16. Ive only owned it for a couple of months, but already I am hoping to sell another of my cars to buy a 2nd Avalon (a newer XLS or Ltd).
