This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2006 Toyota Avalon, the availability of stability control has been expanded to include the XL and Touring trim levels. Keyless startup is now standard, rather than optional, on the Limited.

Pros:
  • Carefully constructed cabin worthy of the Lexus name, powerful and fuel-efficient V6 engine, serene ride quality, huge rear seat, numerous upscale amenities.
Cons:
  • Refined nature leaves little room for personality, rear seats do not fold.

  • Dynamic Laser Cruise Control - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Overall the car is very smooth, quiet and is generally well manufactured. Only time will tell how durable it is. Up to this point I had to have the left outside mirror repaired, the fuel door needed repair and one moulding needed minor repair. The worst thing is the dynamic laser cruise control. It is very erratic once there is more than one person in the car, it does not detect cars as advertised. The unit generally doesnt work in even light rain, is affected by bright sun, can only be adj in 5 mph increments they cant fix it - it is a waste of money until Toyota makes improvements.

I purchased the Avalon as a Christmas Present for my wife who is a Real Estate Agent. It has the quality and refinement of a Lexus. It has a huge reclining back seat perfect for showing real estate. We have had a lot of complements for clients. My wife says it is the best car she has ever owned. I can rest easy that it conveys style and refinement with out being overstated and I know reliability is not an issue.

  • An excellent car needs some improvements - 2006 Toyota Avalon

I like the stye, driving and riding comfort. The roof trim over the doors pops when using an automatic car wash. The navigation system is difficult to program and operate and is signficantly overpriced for the performance obtained. I will buy another Toyota Avalon Limited, but without the navigation system, unless it is redisigned to make it more user friendly.

  • A lot of bang for the buck - 2006 Toyota Avalon

After owning this car, it is easy to see why Toyota is doing so well. This American designed and built car is like owning a Lexus but costs much less. The blizzard-white pearl paint job is beautiful. Also owning a fuel stingy Rav4, I am also impressed with Avalons 31 mpg on the highway. I test drove a Lexus and previously owned a Volvo, but the Avalon was such a great car for the money.

The car is absolutely beautiful, very comfortable and refined. We drove it home and it indicated an amazing 34mpg. We were very happy with the car with the exception of an odd noise. I believed it to be fuel injectors or something of the sort at first. By the time we were at 1500 miles it was very loud. We brought it to the dealer. They gave us a loaner and called us later to advise they were replacing the motor. After a few weeks with a brand new loaner, we received it back. It now is as quiet as our 97 Avalon was.

  • Loss of engine oil with no warning light - 2006 Toyota Avalon

I purchased my car almost 3 yrs ago, everything was great until it reached 33000 miles; suddenly the engine produced loud noise, it was a complete loss of engine oil with no warning light in the dashboard. The dealer was very familiar with the problem before I even spoke. He asked me if it was the loss of engine oil. I would like Toyota to look into this problem. Otherwise the car is great and I love it.

Comfortable, quiet car with a few creaks and moans. Didnt expect this from Toyota. Shudders sometimes on slight acceleration uphill. Seems to be going away the more the car is driven. Frankly, Ive driven Toyotas before and expected a bit more from their flagship sedan.

  • Concerns about quality - 2006 Toyota Avalon

We have owned two Avalons previously and liked them a great deal. The 2006 XL we purchased gives us some concern. The transmission hesitation when you want the car to move quickly is a real problem. In addition, after backing out from a parked postion and then moving forward there is a low rumble in the rear. Other than this, we like the quietness in the interior, roominess, and looks, especially with silver pine mica.

After 16,000 miles, this car has NOT had any quality-related problem requiring a trip back to the dealership. Havent experienced any sluggish performance in either the engine nor transmission as mentioned in some of the forums posts. Very smooth ride and quiet in city & highway driving. Took quite a while to get that drivers seat adjusted just right. So much interior room without the closed in feeling like you get inside the Acura TL or Mercedes E320. A lot of car for $$$ less then Lexus. Once you start using the smart key, there is no returning to traditional car keys.

  • My Avalon - 2006 Toyota Avalon

This is the worst car I have ever purchased in my life. I absolutely hate this car. It is so ugly. I thought the "supposed" reliability and refinement that Toyota "supposedly" delivers would shine through, but I was sorely disappointed. The Avalon is just an unrefined automobile that has serious styling issues, and reliability issues. I have replaced the water pump already after 3 months of ownership, and the dealership was very unfriendly towards my purchase. Ive even quit going to that dealership to have my car serviced. Toyota definetly hit a mud ball when they put this one out!!! I am trading it in for a new 300C or Five Hundred. I will never buy another Toyota.
