This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2006 Toyota Avalon, the availability of stability control has been expanded to include the XL and Touring trim levels. Keyless startup is now standard, rather than optional, on the Limited.

Pros:
  • Carefully constructed cabin worthy of the Lexus name, powerful and fuel-efficient V6 engine, serene ride quality, huge rear seat, numerous upscale amenities.
Cons:
  • Refined nature leaves little room for personality, rear seats do not fold.

  • Exellent car - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Best luxury car Ive ever driven. I got ventilated seats in the front that is air conditioned and heated. I also love my mirrors which are self adjusting so if someone puts on their blinders my mirrors adjust to keep the lights out of my eyes at night.

My 2006 Avalon XLS is overall a great car. It has major drawbacks in the "drive by wire" trans; it cant seem to find its gear when your slowing down. If you speed up, it revs and then lunges, meanwhile nothing is happening to move you forward. This is a safety and fuel economy issue. The in-town, surface street mileage is awful, about 12-14 mpg, as is the stop and go driving and in-traffic mileage. On the open road, it gets great mileage, and has the power needed to get up and go. Ive had some bad fit and finish experiences: side turn signal mirrors were distorted after 2 tries to replace; still working on wind noise from side windows, way too loud. Magnetic signs damage the paint.

  • Undependable, too expensive, too LOUD! - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Very sad to have had this car six months. Several mechanical and electrical problems, but the worst of it is the VERY HARD seats and the loud interior. I drive on some rougher blacktop and the car is NOISY. Im also picking up flecked paint on the front and the unprotected doors are getting chipped at the supermarket from other car doors!

  • sudden loss of engine oil - 2006 Toyota Avalon

A friend with 30,000 miles on same model reported sudden loss of engine oil with no engine light. I talked with local maintenance supervisor about this. He reported this was a regular problem, especially at 50-60k miles. Replacement rubber hose hard to find. No recall yet but he expects one any day.

  • Best car I have ever owned - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

I have owned over an estimated fifty (50) cars in my life time and this Avalon is the best. My last seven have been Toyota including three (3) trucks. This car is an engineering marvel. I love the ride, gas mileage, rooming, security, everything is easy to get at. Folks, Toyota has done it again, THE BEST.

  • A few things that I would change... - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Park far away because any door that hits into this car, you will get knicked. Gas mileage averages 20MPG and the best 25, not what its rated at. Inside compartments get stuck sometimes. Passenger seat doesnt have many options. Kids love the back seat (reclining), but when left reclined, its not comfortable getting into. Trunk space should be more. Im keeping my van for family trips longer then 3 hours. I love riding in it & navigation is pretty easy. I dont have a problem with voice commands, but system doesnt like my husbands voice for some reason. (He doesnt have an accent, just a lower voice then mine!) Sometimes it takes several attempts.

  • 2006 Avalon is SOLID! - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

This car is a solid all around and I am very impressed with the performance so far. Build quality is top notch and this car feels like a Lexus inside. Gas mileage is great out of the box. I feel very safe in this car with the optional stability control. Its not a BMW, but this car has exceeded my expectation by far.

  • Avalon XLS with Navigation - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Great car, enjoy using the voice activation to control radio, AC and CD player. Nagivation system, takes some time to learn, but it has been great for mapping out points of interest, ie: golf courses, restaurants. Edmunds site was a great help in getting the best price.

  • An Excellent Vehicle - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

This is, without a doubt, the nicest and most enjoyable vehicle Ive ever owned. It has everything I look for in a car; comfort, agility, and power. The exterior design is understated, yet stylish. The interior is extremely quiet and the controls are clean and logically laid out. The ride is smooth but not spongy. It has excellent acceleration and power while also providing respectable gas mileage. I enjoy driving this car in town; however, it really shines on the highway. The 12-speaker audio system is outstanding. The Limited comes with some "gee-whiz" features such as the heated/ventilated seats and power rear shade. I may not use them often, but its nice to have when you do.
