This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2006 Toyota Avalon, the availability of stability control has been expanded to include the XL and Touring trim levels. Keyless startup is now standard, rather than optional, on the Limited.

Pros:
  • Carefully constructed cabin worthy of the Lexus name, powerful and fuel-efficient V6 engine, serene ride quality, huge rear seat, numerous upscale amenities.
Cons:
  • Refined nature leaves little room for personality, rear seats do not fold.

  • Great, but some faults - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Overall our experience has been very good with our 2006 Avalon. The ride has been very smooth and quiet and the pick-up is very good. This may be one of the fastest cars weve owned (with a six).

  • Sips gas, limo like back seat, great family car! - 2006 Toyota Avalon

As a young family of 3 we wanted to get a car where the kids elbows dont touch which sparks arguments and they cant kick the front seats which drives me nutty. Low MPG SUVs were out and putting money into a dreadful minivan felt as good as paying federal taxes. We are in our 30s and this car seemed out of our age group but the Touring edition adds some youthful style and lets face it, still better looking than a minivan. The reclining rear seats are great for the kids. Smooth and quiet ride even at 90,000 miles and about 31 MPG on the highway. Rides equal to a newer vehicle but we only paid about $13,000. Not bad for a large family car with leather, heated seats, and a moonroof.

  • Im Happy - I Think - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Overall experience has been positive. Its a comfortable car to drive and quite luxurious compared to my old Camry - which was a great car. Gas mileage is not quite what I had expected but I live in hilly terrain so that may be a factor. I like the interior and exterior styling and the room in the car. The car has a rattle coming from a seat belt assembly and is not as tight as I would have expected. Power is great but transmission surges easliy and shifting of transmission is somewhat crazy at times.

  • Decent car for the money - 2006 Toyota Avalon

I bought this car for the expected reliability and comfort for the long commute to work. Surprisingly, this car is not as comfy as a 95 Camry my sister-in-law has. Perhaps its the 17 inch tires and the firmer seats than expected. Road noise is well subdued and the power is good, but any faster than 100, and its floats and bobs more than the Civic and Accord I used to have. The worse thing about the car is the navi which is hard to use with the button. Trying to navigate the keyboard with it and you end up "entering" half of the time. The touch screen in my wifes TL is so much more user friendly. Otherwise it is a great deal.

  • I miss my Regal GS - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

I owned a 97 Buick Regal GS with the supercharged V-6 and touring suspension. It was quick and handled great. My new Avalon Touring Model is also quick but doesnt have anywhere near the road hugging ability of the GS. With 157,000 miles on the GS, I really wanted to replace it with a Buick LaCrosse but it was too ugly. The Avalons transmission sometimes seems a little confused, but the dealer tells me the computer will adjust the transmission to my driving style. I dont know if its my imagination, but it seems to have improved. The door over the radio wont open until Ive pressed the button a few times. Odd. I think the interiors beautiful and everyone who rides in the car loves it.

  • 06 Avalon XLS - 2006 Toyota Avalon

This vehicle has the worst transmission I have even driven. It jerks every time it shifts and feels like a 10 year old Honda tranny. It is the only "Newer" vehicle that I noticed that still gear hunts. The seating position is horrible as well.Im 6 feet(not extremely tall but not too short either) and the Avalon has no head room, leg room and terrible gauge visibility (I actually get cramps on my legs). This kinda keeps me away from enjoying the other amentities that comes with the car.Lumbar could be more stiff.Lastly, this is a brand new car and it makes creeks and rattles from under the passenger seat. One of my lights went out already.Im getting a BMW next time.I loved my old 323i.

  • Classy, powerful, and very comfortable - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

Drove the fun but very uncomfortable FJ Cruiser for 6 months which wrecked my back. Checked out BMW/Audi/Volvo - quality not there for the $$$. This car has power, a very quiet ride, handles well, power seats with lots of adjustments, an elegant interior, and its incredibly roomy inside. Mileage has been around 20, lower than advertised. Rear view mirror could be larger. Steering wheel should be power. No iPod/aux jack, but the stereo is really good. Keyless entry is addictive. Car should come standard with side molding!! I had mine installed right after purchasing it for around $200. The morning commute is now serene. Great value vs. Lexus, build quality is right there.

  • Good Value - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Car has great pick up. Electronic control layout is very good. Comfortable ride. Interior is very nice. Steering is not as responsive as my last car, Lincoln LS.Very good gas mileage. Runs well on regular unleaded.

  • So Far So good - 2006 Toyota Avalon

After having the Mazda 626 (2000) the Avalon Limited is quite a jump. The jump has been good I find the interior to be roomy and comfortable. The car is big. While it isnt a sports car, it is nimble. Noise is very low The rear seating room is immense. Control location for driver is convenient.

  • Engine Oil Problem - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

AC light began flashing and I smelled burning oil. All of the engine oil had drained. I took it to a dealer who informed me that they needed to replace the oil line. This is a defect with this engine that really needs attention. I would not recommend Toyota or purchase another one since the quality is not there. This is the first time in 35 years of owning and driving cars that I have ever had such a problem.
