This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2006 Toyota Avalon, the availability of stability control has been expanded to include the XL and Touring trim levels. Keyless startup is now standard, rather than optional, on the Limited.

Pros:
  • Carefully constructed cabin worthy of the Lexus name, powerful and fuel-efficient V6 engine, serene ride quality, huge rear seat, numerous upscale amenities.
Cons:
  • Refined nature leaves little room for personality, rear seats do not fold.

  • Not Impressed so far! - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

Bought the top of the line Limited model with all the bells and whistles except for NAV which I find useless. The engine is pretty quick and the interior room is good. I was dismayed to find after the first month that the transmission was leaking on my garage floor. Thankfully the dealer fixed that. The car handles well but is noisier than expected. I also think the trunk is too small and find it incredible that Toyota doesnt install some kind of exterior door protection trim molding on a 36K car! Im also not overly fond of the light fake wood but I do like the silver accents.

  • Seats Cause Pain - 2006 Toyota Avalon

The seats caused excruciating low back pain. Had to sell the vehicle after only driving it 4 times. Car felt comfortable during short test drive, but once driven 30 miles, it started feeling like I was sitting on concrete. Never had a car seat cause back problems. Seats are poorly designed and too firm. Dont buy if you have ever had back problems. Interior looks luxurious, but it is not. It was my second Avalon and the last Toyota I will ever buy.

  • So this is Toyota! - 2006 Toyota Avalon

My first new Toyota and in fact first new car! Never before have I been so divided. On the one side this car is well crafted and has a sweet V6 engine. Interior room is good. Dash is easy to read. Like the auto headlights too. Then on the other hand many annoyances abound. The rear seat doesnt split fold. The rearview mirrors are fixed. No door protection moldings on a 28K car! No bluetooth option. Transmission has been quirky. More road noise than it should have on the open road. Mileage not what advertised. Door insulation held on by cheap plastic and it falls off on occasion. Trunk is tiny! And the back seats are more comfy than the front ones on long trips which is really weird.

  • 2006 Toyota Avalon Touring - 2006 Toyota Avalon

I purchase my 2006 Toyota Avalon in 2005, it was ok for about 2 years. When driving sometime my steering wheel would adjust it self to its lowest level with out me doing anything for it to happen which is not safe, I took it back to the dealer and they said they didnt see anything wrong with it and as of today it still dose it,it seems to be something with the steering level on the steering wheel. About a year ago I also had and oil leak up under my car and this year my alternator went out on me in the middle of the Dan Ryan Express Way, a scary situation and I had my ten year old grand daughter in the car with me.

  • Defective Electronics - Toyota Avalon - 2006 Toyota Avalon

Having spent 20 years as a Technology Reporter, I may not know much about transmissions, but I know consumer electronics. While the 2006 Avalon delivers a smooth ride and a great "bang for the buck," its electronics are defective.

  • Worrisome Steering - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

Comfort is very good, fuel economy good but the steering is very worrisome. It has a clunking sound and feeling when accelerating and stopping. Already replaced steering column once. Appears that another steering column has gone bad and needs replacing. Fortunately I have an extended warranty but Toyota has yet to approve another replacement of steering column. Very disappointed in the reliability and quality of the car. Excellent sound system and leg room in the car.

  • Would I Buy Again? - 2006 Toyota Avalon

The Avalon is Toyotas version of a Buick. It is much improved over the prior models. The acceleration and economy are a nice blend. The car has great acceleration, for what it is, and the highway mileage is truly over 30mpg. The car has quite a bit of torque steer and can get squirrelly if youre not paying attention under hard acceleration. My opinion is it should have been a rear wheel drive. The car drives well. Its not to tight so it rides well but its not like driving a sponge when cornering (like a Lincoln, Buick, etc.) Road noise is excessive but some of that may be the CHEAP quality tires the factory put on the car. The AC and heat are the best Ive owned.

  • Very disappointed in quality and cost - 2006 Toyota Avalon

This model year must have been the peak of Toyotas lack of attention to quality. The engine oil issue is a complete quality AND customer service fail. After suffering through that, in the last month Ive had to replace the entire AC system. Last year when the car was 4 y/o with 100k miles the AC started blowing warm. Dealer did not find leaks, recharged, and it was ok for the rest of summer/fall. This spring, same thing. This time dealer found "lots of pin holes in the condenser". Read: no trauma, just a quality fail. Ive never seen this and my prior cars were all over 200k miles. Now, *perhaps* a result of the condenser fail, the compressor seized. Total bill to fix AC: $2500

  • always in the shop - 2006 Toyota Avalon

It has been in the shop for the transmission, rattles in the roof, had to replace the radio, a loose fastener in the front fender. Too high an idle. Just not the car my old Avalon was.

  • Waste of money - 2006 Toyota Avalon
    By -

I bought this car thinking I needed the extra room for my growing family. Ended up being the worst car purchase I have made. A car this expensive should not have the squeaks and rattles that it does and it seems a new one pops up every week. I also hate how the maintenance light comes on every 5000 miles. The paint is also horrible - it chips off the front very easily. I just purchased an Acura TL to replace my Avalon which is what I should have bought to begin with. I will not miss seeing this car in my garage.
