This Year's Model Updates:

A long overdue 250-horsepower V6 engine debuts for 2001, making Pathfinder the most powerful SUV in its class. An interior freshening and more standard goodies, as well as snazzy options like an in-dash navigation system and an entertainment system for rear-seat occupants, are new for 2001. Also added to the LE's options list this fall is the handy All-mode automatic 4WD system from the Infiniti QX4.

Pros:
  • Powerful V6 engine, car-like interior, good reliability record, rear entertainment system option, available Infiniti All-Mode 4WD on LE models.
Cons:
  • Tight rear seat, high price tag, cheap interior bits.

  • Best Car I Ever Owned - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder

I have driven this car across the continent U.S., no problems through rain, snow, Ice or dust. Have had zero problems since owning it. I hope to own this car forever, perhaps an unrealistic goal, but that is my view.

This vehicle has one big issue: Oxygen sensors! There are four, and they need to be replaced anytime after 50,000 miles. All four have been replaced at a cost of 135 dollars each. Besides that, I love it. Great ride, handling, steering. Great BOSE stereo. Some loose trim around doors, but otherwise good solid build quality. AUTO 4WD is a nice extra on the LE.

Weaknesses: It feels heavy on the steering when your driving, which tends to wear you down on a long trip. The memory seat tends to lose its memory from time to time. I tend to get about 17 mpg combined city and highway with regular unleaded and about 19 mpg with super, also it has a lot more pep. Over all Im very pleased with the Pathfinder. I have pulled a 2500 lb. boat and a 16 trailer with a variety of cargo without ever needing more power.I plan to keep the Pathfinder.

  • Love my LE - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder

Bought this SUv new just before the 2002 came out. The engine is som much better than previous years. I had the same CD problems as mentioned in other reviews. I argued with the dealership for over a month and they finally got Nissan to warranty it. That was about 50K miles ago and no problems. Other than tires and one replacement of front brakes I have done nothing to this vehicle. I am still on my original rear brakes at 117K miles. I just got rear ended 2 weeks ago at nearly 40 mph and had no injuries and only minor back pain. The flip side is the bumper pushed the frame and I think it is totaled but I guess that is what it is supposed to do to prevent injuries. Great Car!!!!

  • Trouble free at 122k - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder

It just turned 122,300 with the original clutch, one O2 sensor change, a toasted CD changer (just use my iPod now), and the usual wear and tear repairs. I change oil every 3-4,000 miles and have yet to burn any between changes. With mixed driving I get 16-17 mpg with winter fuel and 18-19 in the summer. Long highway trips typically return 21-22 mpg. As this is my vacation vehicle it sees deep sand every summer and deep snow every winter without any problems incurred. Im not one to wash and wax too frequently, and the finish has held up really well. There is a 2005 Pathy SE in the family too, and it has run flawlessly thus far.

  • Great SUV - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder

His name is Walter. I have had him for 5 years and am very happy it. Like with the other reviews, my CD went out at 15k miles (covered), replaced, and went out again at 40k miles. By this time I had an iPod, so I didnt really care. At 70k miles my A/C went out, only cost $400 to replace. Tires lasted 45k miles, so I was happy with that. I was rear ended at 60k miles and the unibody construction kept me very safe. After being repaired, I have not noticed any performance or rattling problems. If I were to buy another SUV, I would definitely buy a Pathfinder. Ive been very happy with it.

  • Downsized - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder

I bought my Pathfinder used with 46000 miles on it to replace a 3/4 ton Suburban. Now have 87000 and am very happy. The only non routine repair has been replacing one oxygen sensor. Mine is a 5 speed, and I consistently get 19 mpg city and over 21 highway. Far better than my 454 Suburban! By the way, the headrests fit nicely in the floor under the folded bottom cushion.

  • Love It!!! - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder

I bought my Pathfinder used 5 years ago- it was love at first test drive. I do admit I baby my cars, but its handled 6 hour road trips like a breeze. Ive also towed my husbands Honda Accord short distances when it broke down. This thing is a tank. Ive only ever had minor O2 sensor problems as far as engine problems go, but we bought the platinum warranty & everythings been covered. Unfortunately Im trading it in- expecting baby #3 and 3 carseats just wont fit!

  • Nice auto if you can afford gas - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder
    By -

If you read the owners manual, you will see that Premium fuel is defined by the Octane rating. The Premium fuel it recommends is usually the middle grade at most gas stations. This is important to know as my Pathfinder averages only 14.5 mpg. Thats my only complaint though, so overall Im happy.

  • My 4th Nissan and favorite - 2001 Nissan Pathfinder
    By -

I traded in my 95 Pathfinder when I saw the commercials in the Summer of 2000 for the new 01 Pathfinder advertising 240 hp. I couldnt be happier. Ive got a lead foot, and the Pathfinder easily accomodates. I can easily hang with the V8 Explorers. The in-dash 6 CD changer is great. Ive already got 34,000 miles on my truck and my one and only problem with it is the poor choice of tires from the factory - Bridestones. Already replaced them with Michelins due to poor tread life. I regularly take trips of 800+ miles and drive it daily to work 25 miles each way - comfortable no matter what.
