Overview & Reviews
Mercedes enters the sport-ute fray with the introduction of the ML320. Designed from a clean sheet of paper, the ML320 offers the best of the car and truck worlds.
- Capable sport ute with Mercedes-Benz levels of refinement.
- Looks like the Mercury Villager minivan from the rear.

Mercedez-Benz ML 320 - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By Mike Bowling - May 20 - 10:00 amI have thouroughly enjoyed my ML 320. I bought it used, which can be a scary thing, but have never had a problem with it. Handles very well and is fun to drive.

Still unbeatable - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By MS - March 16 - 7:40 amWhen I bought it back in 1998, the ML was the king of the SUV hill. So hot it was, I waited for 6 months for delivery. After almost 8 years and 140K miles of service, its time for a replacement (mind you the truck is still going strong). The SUV landscape has definitely changed. A lot of new contenders, but no clear winner. You dont see a waiting list for any one of them. The whole SUV class seems to have softened. Where are the low range gears and the body on frame? My little ML has pulled many monster Suburbans out of the mud... in soccer field parking lots! After much searching, Ive decided to buy another ML. A 2005 version, not the new 2006, as its lost the true SUV spirit.

Mercedes Aint What They Used To Be - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By Dennis Hupp - February 28 - 2:00 amFirst year or 2 had very few minor, but annoying problems -- glove box wouldnt close properly (still does not) and loose knob for adjusting the drivers seat back. Then fuel pump broke in 3rd year at 24,000 miles. Defective dealer workmanship resulted in 2nd fuel pump replacement less than a year later. At 31,000 miles and 4 1/2 years (after warranty expired) the fuel tank started leaking and needed to be replaced ($1,500.00). What do the commercials say about Mercedes quality engineering???? Give me a Toyota Highlander, Acura MDX, or a Lexus RX- 300 instead.

So Sad.... - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By Bryan E - August 2 - 10:00 amJust dont do it..... Left me stranded 3 times in 6 months. So fun to drive and rides wonderful. So sad that reliability is so terrible. Window problems, electrical problems, fuel pump...endless. Back to the Japanese automakers for me.

built to endure ... - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By trw - May 31 - 10:00 amml review .. i have owned 7 x mbz vehicles and at this time own 2. the ml has been all would expect from mbz, in its ride, durability, and performance. i have never had ONE problem with the 2 mls have owned, (sold the 1st at 123,000 miles) and would not hesitate to recommend one to others. it is a vehicle ready to perform, road ready as well as crash ready. having owned everything from 300ds through 430clk models, i have to call the ml a true merc. NOTE, I WONDER WHY THERE IS NO US MODEL ML WITH THE FOREVER RUNNING INLINE 6 DIESEL ENGINE.?? this would truly be a vehicle to own. FYI I HAVE AN ASSOCIATE WITH A ML 98 MDL THAT HAS JUST TURNED 232,000 MILES.

Lease is up in May! - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By PatR - May 22 - 2:00 amDuring the first two years this ML was in the shop 13(not a good #) times. The next two years were flawless except for routine service. I can purchase the ML for $24,000, but I am worried about long term reliability. Considering a Toyota Highlander or a Chevy Trailblazer to replace the ML. How has everyones ML been after the first two years?

Avoid buying this lemon - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By JP122 - March 21 - 10:00 amNothing but problems. Recalled 5 times. Electrical problems that the dealer couldnt figure out and cost me thousands. Problem solved, bought a new Lexus.

102,000 Miles & still going strong - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By alapo51318 - January 17 - 10:00 amI love it. Bought it new in May of 1998 and have had no problems outside of normal wear. Runs great, looks great, rides great! This ML320 was a steal back in 98. Best vehicle I have ever owned in forty years of driving.

ML320 - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By johns - January 10 - 10:00 amML320 has been so much fun to drive. Initially found the tires made a huge differnce in the drive. Michelin LTX are the best ride w/this vehichle. Has more road noise than the newer versions.

Well-engineered and poorly assembled SUV - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
By Miguel K - November 22 - 6:03 amIt is not an extreme off road machine, or a full time all wheel drive hot rod. It is a tall minivan; so dont expect a smooth ride like any MB sedan. Gas mileage is in the mid 20s, which is not bad for such a heavy car. The poor off road capability is due to the OEM tires. Once I replaced the stock 255x65x16 with a set of off road tires, my ML will go most places just like other mid size 4X4. MB needs to cut corners in materials to keep the sticker low. My only complaints are the doors. MB must have sub contracted the door design to Chrysler. ML door does not shut like German automobile at all. Driving lights could use some improvement. I added a set of driving lights to aid visibility.
