Even with all the bad press and reliability problems my wife and I decided to purchase the truck. Its been relatively trouble free, and reliable. Yes, there are some squeeks and rattles, but theyre minor. What repairs we did have were costly, but its a Mercedes. To quote a mechanic that worked on the car... "Youre better off with the devil you know then the devil you dont!" Well keep it for a while longer. (We do like the Highlander though!)

  • Problems! - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I bought the vehicle used with 30K miles. Ive had it for 3 years and its been in the shop 16 times. Everything has been replaced on it. Oil changes average $100, brakes are good for about 30K miles and cost $400 to replace ($800 for front and back). VERY HIGH maintenace costs. It rides a little rough for my tast. Gas milage is good but your paying $.20 per gallon more for premium so that cancels out the good gas milage.

I can`t believe how this car/truck handles. You can "jam" a tight turn, and it stays with you. No lean at all. I`m getting 20 miles per gallon, or better. It has lots of power!!! I`ve taken it off road several times. It is as sure footed as my Bronco was. I am "blown away" by its performance in every catagory. I`ve been a professional Teamster for over 30YRs. I know Vehicles!!!

Purhased my ML after experience with 2 previous MercBenz. I was immediately disappointed just weeks after purchase, when the first vibrational noise (rattle) develop. Took it back to dealer who tried but could not fix. Six months later, the drivers window switch stopped working. Approx. 9 months later, a selinoid in the tranny had to be replaced. Then, the crank pully let go, damaging the oil pan and other parts of the engine...BOTTOM LINE- about $5500 and dozens of trips to the repair shops, I have had enough.

my truck handles like a sports car, and runs like the wind. however i who am notoriously light on the brakes go through a set of disc and rotors every 22000 miles. the dealership used regular oil instead of synthetic in the a and b services and it uses a good bit of oil. i have replaced the electrical controls for the windows every year. and the a and b services have increased in price from 79.00 for a and 179.00 for b. to 179.00 for a and up to 500.00 for b. i have noticed that the trade in value of this model hasnt held up as i thought it would for a suv that consumer reports rated as the best.

This was my first MB and it wont be my last, but this 98 ML has tested me. The engine is flawless, as well as, the ride and handling (better than most cars). But, the minor things kill the excitement - electrical components: dash, windows, wipers. However, my service department is professional and courteous... always willing to help. Plus, the Starmark warranty is the best.

This vehicle looks reasonbly good, handles well, gets good fuel mileage, rides well, but is not reliable. Requires frequent service.

  • Ill keep it... - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Ive had very few problems with this car and the ones Ive had have been minor. The drive is smooth and quiet as expected. Visibility and every day drivability are very good. The A/C is powerful to take the Texas heat. Its off-road attributes surpass any other. My only complaint is the plastic along the driver side seat. The seat bolster rests on this panel and is easy to break where it screws into the seat frame. The dealer wants way too much to replace it (over $600). Ill have to come up with a homemade alternative. Over all, Im very pleased with the vehicle and impressed that I can maintain it for about $600 a year. I plan on keeping it for a long time.

  • Loved the car for the past 18yrs - 1998 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Have this car for the past 14years. Very much love my car because how reliable it is for me to get around. Usually the car dont have any major issue except for the normal wear and tear (e.g break pad, rotors, head light, minor oil leak). What I love about this car is that is made in the USA, except for the engine, which means that when they have to make any repairs it wont cost me an arm or a leg for the parts. Most expensive repairs I have to make was to put a new AC after the car reaches age 10. Unfortunately, my car has reach its limit and the cost to repair the car is not worth the value of the car. I will say this car was worth what I paid for and I will buy another Mercedes again.
